Re: Question about a W D Smart ware external drive

This is all a matter of how well your sensitivity to feel / touch is.

The only comparison I can give is to try holding or lightly squeezing a flashdrive, and you won't feel anything because they're SSD, so to speak.

If you hold an SSD external drive like the Western Digital or SeaGate HDD's it's very noticeable in comparison.  But, as I said, depending on an individual's sensitivity to feel / touch.

I’m nnot sure you can generalize.  My hard drive produces so little vibration that I’m not sure if I feel any.  Iff you do , then the question is answered for your drive.

Hi Janet,

Monte explained the spinning drive, but an SSd has no moving parts, so you would feel  nothing if you were to hold a working SSD drive.

Hi Monte,
May I please ask you what is the difference between vibration and humning on a passport? So, if I hear humning on my Passport external drive, what will that tell me, Will that tell me if my Passport is a SSD or macanical drive?

Hi Sharon,

A western digital my passport drive can be wither mechanical or s s d.
As I wrote earlier, do you feel any vibration or hum from the drive when you connect it to your computer?
