Hi Group,
I always hear about how terrible the US Postal Service is--mostly from our controlled media. I can honestly say that I have never had a bad incident with USPS--even with the unbelievable budget cuts and burdensome pension requirements. The worst thing that ever happened to me with USPS was a ring of mailbox thieves which disrupted service in my local area last year. This could also be due to the lack of postal inspectors stemming directly from budget reconciliation agreements of the past few years.

We're Prime members, so this doesn't affect us, but I can see how it may impact those on a tighter budget. Previously, I would have suggested going in with someone else to off-set the Prime cost, but with Amazon making changes to their Prime terms last year, it's not that simple anymore.

But with Amazon, you have no control over which shipping carrier they will choose for your order. It could be UPS or USPS or Fedex or one of those fly-by-night smaller outfits like Laser Ship or A1 International. And if they split up your order into two or more shipments, they may use different carriers for each one.

I take where I am at UPS or FedEx anytime over USPS!

But here’s another dirty little secret about UPS, Fedex and USPS shipping that you guys may not be aware of. If you live in an apartment complex, these three delivery carriers will no longer deliver large packages directly to your door, even if you have paid a pretty penny out of your own pocket for delivery. Instead, their drivers now usually leave packages with the super or building manager in the basement or other central location. The problem with this new policy is that if the super isn’t around to sign for delivery or place the packages in a secure location, the driver will simply leave them outside his door where anyone can walk by and steal them. I have complained numerous times to UPS customer service about this practice, but to no avail. Whenever I order stuff that is delivered by UPS or Fedex or the USPS, the driver now always leaves the package with my super. But if he is not around to sign for delivery, the driver just leaves the package outside his door where anyone can walk by and take it for themselves. Fortunately, I have not yet had one of my deliveries stolen, but I am still very unhappy over this lackadaisical attitude on the part of these delivery carriers.

I don't see how Amazon does the free shipping even at that price. I guess the shippers give the big shippers a big discount. I sent a 13 pound package by UPS recently and it cost me $37, much more than the cost of the contents of the package. Yes I seen that this morning on the news. I am a prime member so it might not affect me so much.
But this would not be unusual as things is slowing down on buying and so you would expect this. I don’t think they had or even thought of the blind people when doing this . It is just good business sense. If you not selling as much you cannot afford to cut the price of shipping or the price of things just go up as people is now not going to be buying as much. JST

Yikes! Imagine my horror when I visited Amazon.com this morning to discover that they have raised their minimum order size to qualify for free shipping from $35 to $49 for non-Prime members. This is a whopping 40% increase, and makes it more difficult for those of us blind consumers who live on limited incomes to now shop there. It’s bad enough that Amazon keeps tinkering with its web site to the detriment of screen reader users like us. But now, to add insult to injury, they have now made it more difficult to get free shipping. A pox on Jeff Bezos and all his ancestors!!! LOL!!
