Hi,
I second Merv’s recommendation of Creative Labs Surround Sound Omni 5.1 whether one just wants simple sound output or more involved connections I have found this device a pleasure to work with and over all easy to set up and use.

If you are looking for an external sound card this is the one I use:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EZT7RE4/ref=sr_ob_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1462124861&sr=8-15

It is a Creative Labs Surround Sound Omni 5:1 and it has pretty good sound. It has a variety of connections including standard 5:1 hookups, RCA, and optical in the back. In the front it has line in as well as headphone  and USB.

I have the optical connected to a set of Logitech Z906 5:1 sub-woofer and speakers with combined rms of 1000 watts. It makes my Lenovo Z70 sound pretty good.

Hope that helps.

Merv

The x-fi USB soundcard works good with both laptop and desktop configuration. I would however instal the drivers from the supplied cd that will come with your card to have more features.
