According to the little bit of research I did myself it would seem that the same format used as a ring tone is also used for text tones as well.

Hi,
Actually I believe they are also m4r according to archives of iPhone default
tones I've got here.
I hope that helps.

Just curious as to the format I would need to save a sound file in order to
create my own custom text tone. I've known how to make ring tones for quite
some time so I figure text tones can't be too tuff.

I half expect somebody to say create an M4A file and instead of changing it
to an M4R file make it an M4T which it couldn't be that easy.

It is obvious that it is a diferent format so I await somebody to give me
the answer.
