I sure do appreciate that.  Do I make any changes to the secure boot?  Or, maybe, secure boot isn’t even in legacy?

Hello,
I'm not carlos, but in order for your HP to boot from media such as CD/DVD, change from UEFI to Legacy, thanks.

First Carlos, thanks for both of your post.

We got in to bios on the HP laptop tapping the escape key and then using F10 to get in to the bios set up.

We got the function keys working the way that I wanted.

We made it in to the boot change area under advance.  Then, we ran in to a problem.  We moved the CD/DVD rom up to the top of the list and saved it.  We thought that would cause the laptop to boot up from bootable media in the CD/DVD drive.  It did not.

The bootable CDR thatI used was an Image for Windows recovery disk that I created on that very laptop.  That same disk does boot up my Windows7 machine.

When we got to the place where it talked about boot order, we had the option of making the change in legacy or uefi.  I chose uefi.  We trie with the secure boot enabled and disabled.  It never booted from the disk.

Should we have gone in to the Legacy and tried there?  Should the secure boot be disabled?  Any ideas?

Thanks,

James B

According to this support page:

To access the BIOS Setup, turn on the computer and repeatedly press the esc key to enter the Startup Menu, then press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup utility.

1. It depends on the model, but look for something like "Action Keys".  Note that not all laptops require that this change be made in the BIOS.  Sometimes the manufacturer provides a utility or sometimes it can be changed in Mobility Center.

2. Again it depends on the model, but look in the "Advanced" tab.

3. It depends on the model, but F10 might be a likely possibility with some HP laptops.

Subject: [TechTalk] How do I get in to the bios on a new HP laptop

Hi all,

I have sighted help coming over in a bit.  I am hoping to get in to the bios on a new HP laptop for 2 reasons.

1.  Where in the bios do we go to change how the function keys work?

2.  Where do we go to permantly change the boot sequence.

3.  Any suggestions as to which key we press to get in to the bios?

Thanks a million.

James B
