I was able to dial a number with an extension by dialing the phone number, holding the Star button until I heard VoiceOver say "Comma."
Then I dialed the extension. That worked. At least I can use that option if necessary. Now I just have to figure out how to make the phone dial the phone number with the extension directly from contacts.

I googled the instructions for doing it the way I did and I found an article that instructs people to do it that way.

accessible. Adding an extension to a phone number when creating a
contact is quite accessible as well.

I haven't tried pressing Pound or Star, but just dialing the extension
when the recording asks for it doesn't work for me because the phone
system I'm calling never excepts it. I'm sure there's a trick to it,
but I haven't found it yet.

The trouble is, what if I'm calling somewhere, and the number is not
in contacts, guess would just have to make it a contact to get that
to work?

Hi Victor, Whitten the main phone number, after you put the phone
number and put some kind of punctuation such a comma in the contacts
before putting in the extension. That way it will automatically just
dial the extension for you whenever you call the number. This is how
a lot of people have to end up doing it.
