Does control s work in Back Stage View? How do you turn Back Stage View off? These seem to me to be the two unasked and unanswered questions in this discussion and they may be important in getting to various options used in the past. I almost never use Word and mine is very old but from discussions I've seen in the past, these seem to me to be the questions that it might be helpful to address.

It occurs to me that you may think your use of ctrl-s isn't working,
maybe it is, and you don't know it. It doesn't say saved or give you
any indication unless you're saving a file for the first time.
