Several reviews state that the creative card still does hardware level
processing and adding effects, even when no driver is installed, or even
when the supposed pure processing free direct mode is used. So this may
be incorrect.

I don't know how prices compare, I never checked them when comparing dacs to soundcards.

But, as I understand it, if you just plug in any sound card, without installing the driver, no processing will be done either. It will use a Windows default USB driver to play the audio. People do this all the time when doing something like installing Windows if they want sound before the Windows sound card becomes operational. I did this with two sound cards many years ago and no processing occurred.

But if someone is satisfied with the internal sound card, and they don't
sound bad at all in general, why spend seventy-five dollars? I don't know
this but it appears the person wants a sound card just for listening.
Context is important in advising people. You are talking about what you
want in terms of sound when you talk about what is acceptable or desirable.
I hope others will enter the discussion so it isn't just an I say, you say
discussion.

There is no 30 dollar sound card, nothing of quality worth mentioning.
The fios dac is about 75 dollars, and is as cheap as a dac goes. The
zen has a better price/performance ratio, and is 129. These aren't high
end dacs iether, there are several near 200 dollars, several around
300-400, and a few above 2500.

As they recommended, I think you should get the FIO or Zen Dac, which
don't process audio, which output audio purely.

I am in the process of e-mailing the sound card manufactures suggested too.
I left a review and thanked them for their honesty about the sound cards. I
guess the did not test weather or not the controls were accessible or not!

Interesting. I got mine a week ago. So far it sounds great. I'm running my
mixer through it and all is well. It seems funny that garbled speech would

So there you go, they even give suggestions to other sound cards. I want to
be able to control how my sound card puts out audio. If I am spending money
on a product, I believe I have the right to expect to be able to use all
features of that product.

installing the software because it works fine without it as I am just
running my speakers through the audio line out, and my Yamaha mixer through
the line in, but if the control panel is accessible I might take a look at

Well, creative got back to me today and I have two people working on this. I
think they are going to use narrator and jaws in 40 mode to see if it can
read the controls and how it sounds. I do not know exactly. But at least

I don't know honestly. I personally am looking at the Zen dac, which is
like 20 cheaper than the creative, but I think audiophile or music
orientated audio dacs are the best, as they don't have the sound
effects and such gamer cards have.

I would avoid the creative ones. There are reports online that the
driver software has bugs under 10, and that the direct mode, whith
enhancements disabled, isn't as neutral as it should be. Moreover,
the enhancements would mess with NVDA or JAWS, and be annoying.

definately need an external DAC/soundcard to drive them to get all

This has happened to my partner after every major Windows update.
She has a Dell Lattitude and is using JAWS. Dell had her disable
the Real Tech audio drivers so the computer would use the
computer speakers.
This does fix the issue but like I said, every major update
re-installs the Real Tech drivers again and this process starts
all over again. Hope this helps.
