By default the speech in the Fire tablets uses the same voice as the one used on Fire TV devices, if you've used them. There are a number of other voices available which can be optionally installed at no extra cost. Personally, I'm not a fan of any of them but the default voice isn't bad. Of course, one's perception of a synthetic voice is very subjective as a voice that I might not like might be one that you might prefer, and vice versa. I wouldn't assume that the voice will be something someone who doesn't use synthesized speech would wanht to hear, especially for extended listening such as reading.
