Regardless of the power settings, you ought to be able to force a hard shutdown by holding the power button for 5 or 6 seconds, but don't release it prior to this or it may simply go to sleep.
If you still want to alter what the power button does, as well as what happens when you close the lid, press the windows key plus x, followed by o.
Then tab through till you reach "additional power settings" and press enter to see the available options.

Hi all,On the topic of power settings, can someone please tell me where to go to findthe power settings for my laptop? I'm asking because on my old laptop when Ipressed and held the power button that resulted in a hard shut down, but when Ido it on my new computer nothing happens. Is this something that can be changedin the power settings? If not then where and how do I change it? Well I don'tneed to do a hard shut down very often there have been times where my computerfreezes and/or Jaws stops talking and the only way to get it going again is toshut it down which I obviously can't do without speech so I have to get someoneto shut it down for me which is annoying. Doing a hard shut down is a way for meto fix it myself. Sorry for the long message, hope someone can help!! ThanksMadison
