That's why it's become pretty much standard practice for meeting organizers to set things up such that any attendee joins muted by default, and can unmute/mute themselves as necessary. It's not like there's much of a trick to toggling the mute in any one of the online meeting platforms. And, of course, if there are several participants involved in a true "back and forth" those participants would remain unmuted until that exchange is complete.
