I don't know why you are hearing that. If you are talking about the NVDA key n menu, it should work without modification. What happens when you use read current object on an item, if you are using the desktop layout, numpad 8. I doubt you will hear the name read out, but its worth trying.
Also, have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling NVDA? Something may be corrupted.

Nowadays when I navigate options in NVDA, I frequently encounter just announcements such as alt, and Alt plus. Maybe that's why I can't seem to navigate the menu? Is there a missing script, or an adjustment I must make in the latest version of Windows 10? Any input would be much appreciated.
