Re: Setting up A New Laptop Question Please.

Janet, be sure the Best Buy store you visit has a functioning Geek Squaed desk so that they can help you set up your new laptop.  Because of pandemic restrictions, some Best Buy stores may not have Geek Squad ttechnicians on hand, so call the store you plan to visit first and explain that you ar blind and will need help setting up the new laptop you purchase from them.  In my experience, sales staff at Best Buy will only answer general questions about the computers they sell, and   will refer you to the Geek Squad desk for technical assistance.  All computers they sell come with Windows 10 already installed, which includes Narrator andWindows Security as part of the operating system .  Depending on the amount of help a Geek Squad technician provides, you may be charged extra for this service.  Just as a reminder, the keystroke to toggle Narrator on and off is Control-Windows key-Enter.  In Windows 10, MS Edge is set as the default browser, so you will need to download the Brave browser yourself and set it as the default. Good luck.

Gene,
Thank you as this is great to hear. One problem solved! Smile! One of the very first things I would like to do is to put Brave on my Laptop.
I just think I will ask Best Buy if they will turn on Narrator, or I will turn it on to see if it will come on and stay on ! Isn't Narrator part of Windows? I'm wondering if Narrator is part of Windows, and if Narrator is not working correctly, is Windows fully installed. Just trying to figure this out.
There has to be some way I can set up the Laptop though. I don't know if it would do any good to call MS tech support though, and I have to admit if I have to do that, I dread that! LOL!

Brave automatically blocks advertising so there is nothing to do.

Gene,
I will definitely be using Brave, as I absolutely love Brave as my browser,
and I wouldn't even want to go online if I didn't have Brave! Do I need to
turn on an ad blocker in Brave though, as I don't think I turned any on
when I first installed Brave.

I would suggest, however, that you use either the Brave Browser for most of
your browsing or, if you want to use something else, use an ad blocker. U
Block Origin, spelling, has a very good reputation and my recollection is
that I didn't have to do any setup. I just installed it as an add-on or
plugin, or whatever the exact description is. Its not a question of whether
you want to block ads, though you may, but advertising on web sites may be
dangerous. Ads may be hacked and try to install malware. So in addition to
antimalware software, I consider either a browser that blocks advertising by
design, Brave does, or one on which you install a good add blocker to be
important for Internet security. Asto exactly how you install one on the
browser you will be using, the list can discuss that once you decide which
browser you will use as your main browser.

As far as I know, you won't have to set up security if all you want to do is
use the program Mivcrosoft provides with Windows. As I recall, its system
Defender.

You may want to use something in addition such as Malware Bytes but System
Defender is a highly rated program and you will be unlikely to need
something else unless you want to use something like Malwaare Bytes.

You will have to go through some sort of procedure as has been discussed
here when you first use the computer. Aside from what you are discussing,
the only thing I can think of is to set up your computer to work with your
WIFI, unless at home, you are going to connect your computer to your router
by cable. I don't know enough about how you set up your computer to work
with your WIFI to discuss it. When I had my modem set up here, the
serviceman set up my laptop to work with it. I think AT&T does that for
customers when a router is connected by them.

Hi All,
I'm just curious if Windows Ten is already installed on my Laptop, what
might be left that I would need to do? I know I will need to set up an email
program, install my screen reader, set up security though. Just so I know
what to expect when I bring home my Laptop. I know how to plug it in
though! LOL!

Peace Be With You.
