Re: NVDA Help Please.

Hi Quentin,

Thank you for this.  I am reading about coming from JAWS to NVDA screen reader, but I don’t see anything about using NVDA with a laptop, or does this even matter? Can you please tell me the advantages of using a NVDA full version and a NVDA portable version, as I am thinking I might be quite interested in the portable version if possible.  I’ve never used NVDA, but I’ve used JAWS for at least 30 years, but because of FS raising the prices as they did, I feel it is time for me to move on.

Thank you for any advice.

Janet

Also, as someone coming from Jaws, there is an article with information on some of the first things which might be useful for you - where things you know from Jaws are in NVDA and so on: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda-community/wiki/SwitchingFromJawsToNVDA

Hi Monte,
Thank you for this! As I was searching online, I kept seeing NVDA 2021 tester, so now I appreciate you telling me the current version to download. I've also notice when reading about NVDA, it mentions a lot about using NVDA with a desktop, but as of yet, I haven't read anything about using NVDA with a laptop. Do you know if NVDA is accessible to use on a laptop? Do you know the advantages in using a full version and NVDA portable, as I didn't know NVDA had a portible version?

Thank you.

ISO accessible solution to roasting coffee at home

Cristóbal

Hello list,

So after doing the math on my coffee consumption, I figured I’d try my hand at home roasting to save some bucks. I’ve poked around and while yes, I know I can go super simple and roast on the stove with a heavy pan like a cast-iron skillet, I don’t feel like dealing with all the smoke and chaff getting everywhere that such a method creates.

I’m therefore looking for an accessible popcorn maker first to try my hand at it and to even see if it’s something I can get into and if so upgrade to a machine more dedicated to actual coffee roasting. It looks like you can even go super janky and use a heat gun in conjunction with a bread maker. Although I’d probably pass on this method as well.

So… are there any at home coffee roasters on this list? Can they recommend any particular popcorn maker or coffee roasting appliance or perhaps what to stay away from?

Thanks,

Cristóbal

Re: Donating your voice (interesting read.)

There is, or was, a program called Model Talker.  It was originally for people who are losing their voice because of ALS disease, so that they could still use the best of their own voice for text-to-speech.  You went to their website, where you would be given specific instructions to make recordings of speech sounds, and your personal program is created.  There was a podcast in Blind Cool Tech, or Cool Blind Tech maybe ten years more or less ago.  maybe it is in the archives?

Yes, I can see I have sentences to r read but now what?

If I hit start recording, nothing happens.

Re: Accessible SSH Client

Jaffar Sidek

Hi.  You could try Putty.  Also,  You don't need to know anything about programming languages.  Rather, you should be aware of File and Folder permissions.  If it is a Linux server you are going to ssh into, then you should know that there are three basic levels of permissions you can be granted, or allowed to grant if you are an administrator.  These permissions are read, write and execute. You would normally give anyone other then the administrator permision to read and write a file or folder, but the execute permission is only given to the admin of the cerver, so that only he/she has total control over the files and folders on the server machine.  Cheers!

If you are using a laptop, have you bumped your track pad or has that setting somehow become enabled if you had it disabled previously (exactly how depends on the model of laptop you have).

You can turn off reporting of mouse information in NVDA with NVDA+m, but that doesn't disable the mouse, and there are cases where moving it (or certainly if you "click" a mouse button) can cause something to happen on the PC you may not intend.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Subject: [TechTalk] NVDA talking too much

Hello,

I have been using NVDA on a Win 10 System for a while now, and in the
last couple of weeks, NVDA is talking too much.

Actually, NVDA will just start speaking Odd Ball things, where there is
no Cursor, or even any Focus.

Yesterday, NVDA would suddenly read the Action Center Notification
Button. And NVDA would do this about every 10 to 30 seconds.

Before that, during another session of Windows, it might start reading
the Time, or some other obscure line on the screen that normally never
is read at any time.

I don't know if I have accidentally changed something in NVDA, or in
Windows, but I sure would like to shut this random reading off.

I have two other systems, one at home and one at work, both running Win
10 and NVDA, I they both read and work fine. It is just this one System
that is reading stuff that isn't even on the screen.

I could have another program running, covering up what is getting read,
and still, Action Center was Read, the Time was Read, A Slider Bar Value
would be read, Weird stuff. Driving me Nuts!

Anyone have a solution?

Thanks,

Grumpy Dave

Re: returning home

Gene

That is for the browser guessing what site you want to go to or what you want to search for placing the rest of a link or a search topic in a field before you finish typing it.  As far as I know, that has nothing to do with handling passwords.

I’m not sure it’s a good idea to have browsers remember passwords in the first place.  Unless things have changed, this used to be considered a security risk.  Those who follow the question may wish to comment further.

You  will probably find what  you are looking for in this way:
Open settings.
Tab until you get to a button that says something about passwords.  Press the space bar and tab around.  See if you find one or more settings that apply.

The other thing I encounter a lot is when I’m about to enter in a user name this auto fill list pops up and it messes me up. Hi. It’s actually quite easy, and you can add more than one home page. Here’s how I do it.

1. Launch google chrome.

2. Press altF.

3. Arrow up to settings and press enter. You will be placed in a search field and forms mode will turn on.

4. press escape to exit forms mode

5. Press the h key until you get to the heading, on start-up.

6. Arrow down to the third radio button that says, open a specific page or set of pages.

7. press the space bar to select that radio button.

8. Tab once. You will hear, add a new page. Press enter.

9. Type the complete URL, for instance.
http://www.google.com

10. Tab to the add button and press space bar. You can add other pages as well. Then, when you launch google chrome you can control tab between the various
home pages.

Hi,

Using google chrome, not sure about other browsers, I think it worked with IE but alt home would take me back to the home page, in this case startpage.com.

It’s not doing that for me in chrome, what setting needs to be configured for that?

Thank you.

Try the following to turn the Auto Fill:
1. With Chrome open press, Alt + F, to open the menues and press the letter, S, to open settings.

2. Down arrow to You and Google menu, press enter, now tab to, Sync and Google Services, and press enter.

3. Tab to,  Autocomplete searches and URLs button, and make sure this does not say, Pressed.  If it says, Pressed, bress the spacebar so you hear, toggle
button not pressed, or something similar.

Sup bro,

I willy need to tandem with you this week some time to get this chrome crap situated lol!

I just did your steps, and it didn’t work. Am I suppose to reboot the computer?

If we can tandem some time this week, the main issues I have are the following:

Setting a homepage and returning to it using alt home.  Some times, when I launch chrome, it takes me to my home page, some times it doesn’t.

The other thing I encounter a lot is when I’m about to enter in a user name this auto fill list pops up and it messes me up. It shows all the damn user names and passwords I have ever written for different sites. Yes, that could be helpful but a majority of my pw’s are the same, but just with slight variations. I’d just want that stupid auto fill list to not pop up no more.

Then, when you launch google chrome you can control tab between the various
home pages.

Well, you might try calling Apple Disability. They can share your screen and see what you're doing, and if this is a bug, they'll be aware of it. That's the only other thing I can think to do.

No, that just reboots your phone, kind of like Control+Alt+Delete on Widows.

Hi Abby,

When you say press the up and down volume buttons and then holding the power button for about 30 seconds, just what does this do? Does it wipe the phone clean and then you have to start with set up all over again: choose language, enter WIFI SSID and Password?
