Re: a free speach system

Hi David,
It is Microsoft Narrator, also commonly called Narrator!
It has been in Windows since Win2K Pro, but hasn't had much development
until Windows 10, and Microsoft has made a lot of improvements.

Rick

But you can put an apple earbud set in the lightning connector at the bottom of the phone, just can't use it and charge at the same time, unless you have, like I do, a wireless charger. Then you can talk and charge to your heart's content.

Yes, it is built into Win 7 and Win 10.  It is called Narrator and you bring it up by holding down the Control key and Window key and hitting enter.  Also you can hit the same combination of keys to turn it off.

Hi all.  On another tech list one of the members (must work for the company) posted a link to a new radio product the company is developing.  There is a link to a demonstration and I must say it is rather impressive and when it becomes available, I’ll be one of the first to buy one, especially if it has phono outputs.  You can listen for yourselves and there is a survey for your comments if anybody wishes to respond.  I’ll paste the whole email below.  Walter.

Hello.

At Taira Technology, we are in the process of developing a fully talking FM and DAB digital radio.

So far, we have created a promising prototype and are hoping to incorporate innovative features to make it more than just a radio.

Please click on the following link to hear an audio demonstration of our progress so far:

https://tairatech.com/Downloads/radio-demo.mp3

We would appreciate your feedback and would be very grateful if you could complete the survey at the following link:

If you have any comments or have problems completing this survey, please don't hesitate to contact us directly on 03432897501, or email us at contact@....

Iphone stress

Kerryann Ifill <ksbf@...>

Hello, I need some help seriously!
For some strange reason, since last night, my voiceover has been not working properly.
I can only get speech if it comes through Bluetooth headset, if I disconnect this headset I cannot get any speech output. At the same time, my braille display, which is functioning perfectly otherwise, will not respond to anything other than being able to read if I swipe on the screen.
I am using an iPhone 12 mini, is the latest update of the operating

System.
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated! Thanks Kerryann F.. Ifill

That’s cool, but I was simply responding to wait a little while for the file to fully open.

I thought 10-minutes was plenty of time.

The only OCR I have is the one that is the one with jaws 20 I think the version is.

That didn’t work.

My employer has a tendency to have scanned images of pdf’s, I’ve notice over the 14 years I’ve been working for them lol.

I can open a file that is a book of perhaps two or three-hundred pages and, though I haven’t kept careful track of how long it takes, it could be two  or three minutes.  It might be less.  And that is with a computer that is old and not as fast as moderately priced computers are now.  At its time, it was moderately priced.

The next question is how you are going to have the image file recognized.  If you don’t have an OCR program already, I don’t know if you can use a demo, or if you may have to send the file to someone to have it recognized.

Wait a little while for the file to fully open, at which point, it will be displayed below those options.  If you can’t read it after a little while, its likely an image file.

If You don’t have to wait, you can start down arrowing until you get to the end of the options.  You can keep down arrowing and when the file has loaded, you will start moving down in the text.

I’m thinking it’s an image file, as I waited 10 minutes.

I was able to navigate to and launch the file after doing CTRL o.

However, after the pdf opens, how come it says edit page one, fit to page, zoom in, etc.

Can’t I just read the pdf?

It just gives me options to download or print.

If that’s the case, I don’t know why shift tabbing once or twice doesn’t place you in the folders and files list.

I checked a bit ago but I didn’t remember the exact wording correctly.  I hear open dialog.  I then hear file name combo box spoken.  I’m correcting the description for accuracy.  Either way shouldn’t have caused problems This small change in my description of what you hear shouldn’t be of importance and I’m using NVDA.  Even if you hear something slightly different, it shouldn’t matter.  But it may be very helpful to know what you hear when the dialog opens.

Do you hear open file dialog spoken when you issue the command control o?  Try shift tabbing more than once.  I don’t know just exactly what you will move through but there should be a list of files and folders, as there is in any standard open dialog.

From your description, however, you may not be in the open file dialog.  If not, and if you are using control o, I don’t know what the problem is.  You can use another program, of course, I discussed using browsers because you won’t have to install another program.

If you don’t hear open file dialog when you use control o and wait a little while, let us know and let us know what you do hear.

Using chrome, when I do CTRL O, shift tab to navigate to the file, so far all I hear is remove and the name of a recent URL I visited.

What browser do you use?  If it isn’t Internet Explorer and is reasonably current, it will be likely to be able to read PDF documents.

Chrome-based browsers can and Firefox can.  I don’t know about other browsers.

Use control o, not control l to open the open file dialog.  Find and open the file just as you would in any open dialog.

Wait a bit and then start down arrowing.  You may see preliminary items that don’t matter but below various buttons and perhaps this or that odd and end, the document should begin.

it may be, I haven’t compared or seen much about this, that this or that browser may render a document better in terms of formatting.

Not only does the SE sound at least twice as good, it is way way, faster.

You can purchase a $10.00, short cable from Amazon that will allow you to plug your old headphones in to the new SE.  I just leave the adaptor cable attached to my headphones 100% of the time.

The SE2020 sounds a hell of a lot better.

Hi Dave,
The only difference is that the new SE is a little bit bigger and your buttons are on the sides versus on the top and on the side. Let me know if you have any other questions,

Ashley

Re: NVDA voices

Quentin Christensen

NVDA has used OneCore voices (the voices built in to Windows 10 which Narrator also uses) as the default since NVDA 2018.2 - but if you had previously installed it and been updating it since, it wouldn't have changed the synthesizer you were already using.

To get new voices for OneCore, you need to install new speech packs in Windows.  Assuming you are using English (UK, American, etc), if you go to Windows language settings, and add new languages, look for the English ones, there are a number such as Canadian, Australian, and so on, and each of these come with speech packs which usually have at least two voices.  Once installed, you'll need to restart, but NVDA will find the voices.

Also, if you DO still like Eloquence, there is a legal solution - Code Factory make an NVDA add-on for Eloquence, and Vocalizer voices: https://codefactoryglobal.com/app-store/voices-for-nvda/

Kind regards

Quentin.

Hi,

Last week, I installed NVDA, it sounds like it’s using narrator.

That’s a huge improvement from whatever the old one was called that I cannot remember right now, but I am wondering where can I get other voices as I am not liking what it’s using right now.

In all honesty, before I was using eloquence for NVDA, but this was several years ago and it was a hack.

Don’t misread that last statement, I’m not asking for a hack, I’m just saying that is how I used it last time, several years ago.

Thank you.
