Thanks for the explanation.  I greatly appreciate it.  I don't know why I didn't do this years ago.  I was always taught to use a Pop3 account.  Do I set up iMap on gmail or do I do it on Thunderbird?  Thanks again.

The things you are describing are no different.  You still have about the same folders, messages still go into the inbox, commands remain exactly the same.  All IMAP is is a different way of storing and viewing mail  the interface is the same.

And there may be an advantage in using IMAP no one has spoken of.  I can’t discuss other e-mail services but I would expect this to be true in general.  Before I used IMAP with GMail, I had to look on the web site at my spam folder, provided by GMail itself to show spam before it even reached my e-mail program.  Now, using IMAP, any folder used by my server for my account is accessible to me using my e-mail program.  I can look at the spam folder without going online and looking in my account.

I’ve heard about people accumulating thousands of messages in their inboxes using GMail that they want to get rid of.  If you delete messages using the delete key on your e-mail program, they will be sent to trash.  They are deleted from there thirty days after their arrival so you need do nothing.  If you use shift delete, the message is completely removed, it doesn’t go to the trash folder.

In short, IMAP makes management easier because things people have to do with POP3 accounts on the web site of GMail and perhaps with other services can be done directly from your e-mail program.

So even if you don’t have the uses that have been discussed to this point for IMAP, what I’ve discussed are other reasons to consider it.  I’ll add one more:
I see messages from time to time on various lists from people who are moving to another computer.  They want to know how to take their e-mail with them.  If you use IMAP, any computer you use with an IMAP account will show all the same e-mail.  There is no need to transfer mail from one computer to another.

The only disadvantage I know of to an IMAP account is that some e-mail programs don’t let you set up message rules in the program for IMAP accounts so you have to do so on the web site itself.  Those who have done so may wish to discuss this further.

Thanks for getting back to me.  I think I told you that I hit Control Enter to send a message and to begin a message, I hit Control N.  As to the folders, I like all of my mail to go into the in box.  When I delete a message, I have it go into the trash folder and then when there is a lot, I delete them totally from that folder and they come off the computer.  I don't like to plug my computer up with messages.  I also have a sent folder that the message I send fall into.  When I start a message and can't finish it, it goes to the drafts folder and then I can go back to it after I save it.  That's all of the folders I want.

new s s d drive

Monte Single

Hi List,

On July 24,  I had a friend help me clone my 500 gig sata hard drive to a 500 gig s s d drive.

It took more time to get the pc to boot to the new s s d drive than it did to clone it; the drive had about 90 gig on it when cloned.

I have a 6th gen i5 processor with 8 gig of ddr4 ram in this pc.

I am running win 10 pro with latest n v d a.

I have the usual stuff on this pc;  current chrome, office 2016, etc..

It takes about 10-12 seconds  till I hear the win10 start up sound and the nvda startup sound at almost the same time.

I’d say that’s fairly fast.

The drive I cloned has been in use for 2 years  so its got lots of residual stuff on it.

Howeverf, when it comes to starting programs, opening folders,  usingbrowsers,  I do not notice any significant changes.

So I have a new s s d drive on this 5 year old h p desktop.

Hopefully it will last till 2025 when win 10 will, supposedly, cease to get updates.

Cheers,

Mont

I have the iPhone se2020. I did not see anything for alt-texting, maybe I did not look in the right places! But, the same alt-text is visible on edge, firefox, chrom and brave. But not off the facebook app when I tried viewing the same posting with  2 devices, I would think they would say the same things. I am glad, I tried both devices because, it makes it like someone did not alt-text the graphic and they did? Just my phone cant see the alt-text.

Hello,

I would recommend checking your voice over and speech settings to see if there is something about alt text under there. It should automatically recognize it but I’m not sure if there is something you have to turn on in order for it to recognize the text in an image.

Hi.

Yes, that’s what’s so good about the system. Also, if you have a spouse or partner, or other friend and family member, and they log in to your way around account they can read your tags as well. What phone are you using? If you are using a 7 or above you don’t need to buy the way link scanner.

Also, you should get more than one of each tag with the sample pack unless they’ve changed it. I got 25 tags with my sample pack of various types.

Thanks for the info. I just ordered the little sample pack to get one of each label.

I am assuming if the Way link scanner dies, a new one would read all the existing labels, which is the real advantage over the Pen Friend. My main problem with the Pen Friend is that they put out a new unit which will not read the labels created with the prior version of the device.

My Pen Friend finally bit the dust after years of almost daily use.  Now I can’t independently pick out my own clothes.  I sure miss that thing!

Anyone use the new Pen Friend, I think it is called the 3.

I would appreciate any information from users about how they like it or what doesn’t work.  It says it takes 3 to 6 weeks to come and you order from Maxi Aids.  Any other sellers of this product?  Either the price has gone up a lot or I surely don’t remember the cost being so high. Sounds like it comes from the UK.

This is one item I have gotten much use out of.  It makes me mad that I heard you can’t use the labels with the new one.

Help me make up my mind whether to order another Pen Friend.  Thanks much.  Marilyn

I am assuming if the Way link scanner dies, a new one would read all the existing labels, which is the real advantage over the Pen Friend. My main problem with the Pen Friend is that they put out a new unit which will not read the labels created with the prior version of the device.

This is not Marilyn, but would appreciate info from a user of the Way Around system. How is it more versatile? Also, does it provide different labels such as the laundry labels which are fantastic for labeling clothing.

Thanks, Marie

Just a question. Do you use a smart phone? If so, you might want to consider the way around labelling system, much more versatile. If you want more info please ask.

Marilyn

Discovery plus is accessible. It is the most accessible if you add it as an Amazon prime video channel.

Yes I have describe images on for face book, it still will not read the alt-text like it does off the pc.  On the iPhone it saids maybe an image of 2 people on the pc, it saids how many people and the name of one of those people, he is the teacher. So why is it different between the devices for the exact same post. Is facebook breaking the alt-text. I thought I would ask if someone knows before I give face book accessibility a shout. Hello,

I would recommend checking your voice over and speech settings to see if there is something about alt text under there. It should automatically recognize it but I’m not sure if there is something you have to turn on in order for it to recognize the text in an image.

I don’t know the procedure in Windows 10.  But if you open default programs in the start menu search results, then tab around, you are in a part of control panel in Windows 7, you will find a link that says something like set default programs.  Follow it and see what is there.  I found the link but I didn’t go further.  Ask if you have questions or problems.

It is not necessary to go through all these steps to get to default apps.  Just type "default" into the Windows 10 search box, select default apps, and tab through the list of browsers until you land on Google Chrome and select it to make it your default browser.

Its for Windows 10 but if you open the start menu, you are in the start menus search.  Type default and you will be on default programs as the first result without moving through the list.  Read current line if you don’t hear where you are.  Press enter.  I don’t know if the procedure is the same in Windows 7 to set a default program but it is important to know how to use the start menu search.  You can often find something more quickly than opening this, then opening something else, and perhaps going through a number of steps to find something.  If you don’t know the exact phrase Windows calls what you want to do, type what you want to do.  For example, if you want to uninstall a program, if you search for uninstall program, you will find the uninstall utility.

If you want to find the downloades folder, type downloads.

No, no one explained iMap the way you just did. I'm not tech savvy at
all so I'm lucky that I can do the things I can. The question I have
is when I set up iMap, will it look my folders in Thunderbird that I
have set up now? When I open the program, I download my mail and then
I hit
F6 to see a list of my folders and I hit tab and then it says filter messages and then I can do my business and go down the list of messages. Does iMap work like that or is it more involved? My niece is sighted and usually helps me with these things. I would eventually want my mail to come off the server so it doesn't clog my devices. When I send a message, I hit Control Enter and then when I'm done, I hit Control S to send. Does this work the same way for iMap? Sorry that I have so many questions. I just need to know that things work the same way so I don't have to start all over again. If you could tell me how to set it up step by step, I could definitely do it. Thanks in advance.

Hey Shelly.
I’m not here to decide what is best for you but let me explain something to you.
If you use iMap then whatever happens server side will apply to every device you use at the same time.
Let’s say you get a message on your thunderbird and open it and read it .
Once you go to your phone, the same message will be there and it’ll be marked as read.
Let’s say you open a message on your phone, read it , then reply to it.
Your message will be marked as replied, you’re reply be put into a sent folder.
Let’s say you then go to your PC. You’ll see the same message, but it’ll be marked as replied, and you’ll see it in the sent folder, just as you would on your phone.

This applies to anything you do using email.
Deleting messages, forwarding messages, creating folders, literally anything.
See the advantage of iMap is that it doesn’t matter what device you do what on.
I used to use Pop3 some while back, but see this is exactly why IMAP exists.
For this very reason. For people who have and use multiple devices.
this way you don’t have to worry about what you open where and when.
This way you don’t have to think, hmm. Did I open the mail on my PC, is it on my phone? Where is it?
Where is the reply?:
It also just makes managing mail a lot easier.
IMAP is made for multiple device/web access.

No mattter if you do these things on your thunderbird, or your phone, or the web interface, the server will keep track of everything that is done and it’ll be mirrored across devices. I did read the thread, but not sure if anyone explains in greater detail the advantages of imap.
In case they didn’t, that’s why i wrote you here.
I’d personally a advise you switch to iMap with your mails. It’ll make life a lot easier for you, in my opinion.

Take care,
John
