Re: Overcrowded Sata Power Cable
Usually, they have the watts which they will fluctuate/ between but maintain at the true power of certain range. Never heard of only allow you to use certain range of plug. PSU itself will allow to run at full capacity at certain between it will depreciate due to wear and tear. I believe it will drop like 5% the max as it goes. But most of the time, you will not use the max and its not a good general practice to use its max, you should the most use about 80% of the PSU capability. If you exceed that 80%, you have over use your PSU, and your system will be unstable.

I have here one of those seasonic modular power supplies. On the sata cord, there are four power connectors. However, you can only run three at most. Why include four connectors if you can only run three at a time? This is really puzzling.

I don't doubt there may be some truth to this claim and you may have read it in an article somewhere, but I would be careful about assuming that it applies to all models from both brands unless you have reliable sources to indicate otherwise.

Hi all. In the new year I'm contemplating getting a laptop. It has been a few years since I had one and things have moved on a fair bit since then. However I would like to know which manufacturer is considered to have the best quality products. A few years ago I saw a lot of posts on lists like this moaning and complaining about HP but have they improved? are they considered a good bet for quality and reliability now? There is a lot of differing brands on offer but I'd like to consider your opinions on the various brands and their pros and cons before seeking out a suitable model. I've just looked at one web site and noticed that laptops are still rather expensive. I actually want a laptop rather than a tablet because the hard drives are larger and there is an integral keyboard and more than one USB. I've discounted apple as Apple are too controlling, restrictive and it is a completely new learning curve which I'm not inclined to embark on. I would much prefer win7 as the OS, definitely not Win8. The site I looked at has no Win10 which surprises me so I'll need to go with Win7, stick with what I know I guess.
If you have an opinion on the various brands then will you please let me know your thoughts and why you have come to the conclusions you have. With thanks. Walter.

It actually reduces the quality because once again you are transcoding to a lossy format which means the encoder is throwing away even more data. ----- Original Message ----- From: Merv Keck To: TechTalk@groups.io Sent: Sunday, December 13, 2015 5:58 PM Subject: [TechTalk] Pizzara Audio Extractor
Hi,
I apologize if I am not spelling that correctly but I'm currently typing with a blinding headache right now. I wanted to thank Carlos again for the above stated audio utility. I have been meaning to try some of the other utilities on the list above what I am already using but I have had this one for a while thanks to his recommendation. Today I had a file that did not need converted but it did need the volume boosted quite a bit. It really didn't need normalized or a bunch of fancy audio work in goldwave or any other application I might have. So I just very quickly brought it up and boosted the volume and while I was at it boosted the bit rate and it now sounds much better for the casual listening in which it was intended. So I wanted to thank Carlos again and throw that out there if anyone thinks that utility is just for converting from one file to another.

Re: Pizzara Audio Extractor
Hi Merv,
I don't think that boosting bit rates will actually improve fidelity. I know many people think that if you take an mp3 file of 128 KBPS and open it in Gold Wave or MP3 Direct cut or some other program and then save it at 320 KBPS, that it makes an increase in quality. It does not. MP3 is a somewhat lossy format to begin with. When you take a 128 KBPS file and change it's bit rate to 320, all you are doing is taking one lower level lossy format and degrading it more--although the bit rate says 320, it's 320 of an original 128 file--which is lower quality.

Re: does system access work on windows 10
That does sound unusual. If this is a 1st time install, did you try installing from www.satogo.com ?
You could also try downloading the repair tool onto another pc and transfer it with a USB drive and run in manually to see if that helps.

Re: using NVDA to upgrade to Win10
Hi Jim, You can use NVDA up until the computer says it's going to restart (and will restart several time). After that point, wait about half an hour (give or take, depending on the age and speed of your machine), then try pressing WINDOWS+U to start Narrator and bring up the ease of access center - you'll need to do this at this point as while NVDA should work once the install is complete, only Narrator works in this middle part). If Narrator doesn't start, go grab another cuppa and try again in another 20 mins. On my five year old machine it took about 80 minutes - I've heard reports anywhere from half an hour to three hours so your mileage may vary. I've written a book on Windows 10 you may be interested in. Well, I agree computer in general is down in prices. Can you spend a lot of money on one yes. But you can buy a very good laptop and desktop for around 1000 bucks or less. I would say you can get a fairly good windows machine to do most of what most people would want to do with one for around 600 to the 800 buck mark. I don't have any specific recommendations at the moment, but I have to disagree about the prices. If anything, laptop prices are lower than ever. ----- Original Message ----- Sent: Sunday, December 13, 2015 1:59 PM Subject: [TechTalk] Laptops, who is king of the hill? Walter.

Re: looking for a labeler that works with the Perkins brailler and dymo tape
I'll call Maxiaids again tomorrow since I now know what it's called, but when I called them Friday and just tried to explain what I wanted the lady said that the only thing they had that was close to what I was describing was a dymo tape holder.

I got my Perkins labeler from the NFB. I think after I purchased it, heard you could get it for half the price at Humanware of Maxi Aids or some such place; I don' remember just where.

Hello Pat,
Do you remember where you bought yours, and/or do you know who sells them in the United States? I just googled Perkins dymo adapter and I found it at a company called Worldwide Vision, but I couldn't tell if they are in the US or not and I'd rather purchase it from within the US so the shipping cost won't be so much.
Thanks.

Hi Troy and Everyone, Yes, there, indeed, is a device for labelling that can be used with the Perkins Brailler. I know, because I have one. The one I have is metal, and it sits under the carriage of the Braille writer. It is as long as the Braille writer line, and the one part that holds the tape lays on the Braille writer, with the tape ending up underneath the Brailing head as it moves from left to right. The other edge of the device hangs down, making sure that it is positioned properly for the Braille to be written.
It is called the Perkins Dymo Adaptor.
Blessings and All the Very Best, Pat

Hi All,
I thought there used to be something that you could use with the Perkins brailler to make braille labels on dymo tape, but I called Perkins this week and although the guy knew what I was describing he said they didn't have it and he sent me to Maxiaids, but I called Maxiaids today and the lady I talked to had no idea what I was talking about and said that the only thing they have that sounds close to what I described is a dymo tape holder.
Does such an item still exist, if it ever did, and if so where might I find it and what is it called if anybody knows? I was talking with some friends a couple of months ago and they seemed to know what I wanted and they said they do exist, and they gave me a place to try if I wanted a plastic one and another place if I wanted a metal one, but I can't remember now where they said to go.
I have one of the metal braille labelers that has the braille dial that you turn to select what letter you want, but of course that dial doesn't have nearly all of the braille contractions so that's why I want this other item is so I can use more contractions and thus make shorter labels since I'd be using the Perkins brailler.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Troy

Re: Pizzara Audio Extractor
I understand. For casual listening it
probably isn't a big deal. I was just providing clarification.
Just some thoughts to keep in mind for more important material.

This was just a quick fix for
a very casual and immediate need. The file was already toast when I got it. I
usually don’t work with ccompressed audio when altering files for long term
results.

Just be aware that
increasing the level of a file with Pazera Audio Extractor involves
transcoding which means loss of audio quality if the target format is not
lossless like wav or flac. If the source file is an MP3 and you want to
modify the gain without quality loss, you are better off using a program like
MP3Gain.
Also, increasing the
bitrate of a lossy format like MP3 does not improve the
audio quality. It actually reduces the quality because once again
you are transcoding to a lossy format which means the encoder is throwing away
even more data.

Hi,
I apologize if I am not
spelling that correctly but I’m currently typing with a blinding headache
right now. I wanted to thank Carlos again for the above stated audio
utility. I have been meaning to try some of the other utilities on the list
above what I am already using but I have had this one for a while thanks to
his recommendation. Today I had a file that did not need converted but it
did need the volume boosted quite a bit. It really didn’t need normalized or
a bunch of fancy audio work in goldwave or any other application I might
have. So I just very quickly brought it up and boosted the volume and while
I was at it boosted the bit rate and it now sounds much better for the
casual listening in which it was intended. So I wanted to thank Carlos again
and throw that out there if anyone thinks that utility is just for
converting from one file to another.
