HI John,

If you seen the message with a link that Gene sent to this list, you will have a much better understanding why the computer might be going to sleep.  Check it out!

But why would your computer’s sound card go to sleep?

I’ve not ever had this happen.

Silenzio is a small utility that will continuously play a WAV file which will not let your computer's soundcard sleep.

Hi Mike,

I installed silencio;  and it worked.

When I leave the p c for a lengthof time, say an hour,  my Boes Revolve  speaker is indeed silencio.  Yes, it is a Bluetooth speaker,,  but I am using it with a standard audio cable. The cable is connected to the audio out jack of the onboard realtech audio.    So the Boes play all the windows sounds, plus any multimedia I play like music, books, and u-tube etc..

I am using nvda which comes through the line out of a little Sabrent u s b card.

Suggestions?

Cheers,

Well, I guess I do not know much, but I thought I had successfully installed silencio after telling micro soft to but out and let the install proceed. I definitely chose English in the silencio setup and pressed next and finish----I think.

Silencio is not showing up in the notification area.

When I choose the silencio icon on the desktop and select open,  I get a warning sayhing that only one instance of the program can run at the same time.

So how do I open this little beast  and choose the desired audio output?

Still cheering,

Sometimes Windows does that for no good reason lol. You can go to the
drive properties and run an error scan just to be sure but truthfully
you can just ignore it most of the time.

Reading a PDF Document on the Internet

Veronica Kirk

Hello to all,

I am in need of some help please.  I recently ordered a battery for my laptop and a docking station from Dell, both of which I have received.  However, I am going to return the docking station, as my nephew discovered that my original docking station still works (thank goodness), and the docking station I just received is not compatible with my monitor.  I plan to e-mail the gentleman from Dell who helped me with the purchase to inquire about the mailing address and send him the details about the item I am returning.  Some of the information I need is on a PDF document, which when opened is opened on the internet.  I need to know how to read the document on the internet.  This is on a windows 7 machine and I am using MS Edge.  I know I can use the read aloud feature, but I want to read it with JAWS so that I can read it line by line.  Your help will be very much appreciated.

Veronica

I should add that not both sound cards may shut down when not being used.  So if you set it to work with the one you want and the other one doesn’t have the problem, that will solve the problem.

Re: silencio

Gene

Here is the answer to what I was wondering about.  You can tell Silencio which sound card to work with.  Evidently, you can’t tell it to work with more than one device.

According to Jonathan Mosen:
This little app can be set to load at start-up and sends blank audio to your audio device. This keeps the device awake, and your screen reader will respond as you need it to.
You’ll find an icon in the system tray, allowing you to tell the app which audio device to send the blank audio to. It will use your Windows default device by default.

The link above the quote is to the Mosen discussion of the problem and the article contains a link to Silencio.

Hey Group.  I have collected several tips on how to make grouped by go away but I can’t seem to make it permanent.  The same goes with making the oldest Email to appear on the top.  Help.

I guess I need the directions made simpler because I have tried so darned many times already.  Please come to my rescue.

I am using Windows 10  21H1 version 1943 1110 and Outlook 2019.  NVDA is my screen reader.

Hi Marie,

There's an easier way to tell, try the following.

Here's how  you can feel the difference using your finger between a USB 2.0 port, & a USB 3.0 port.  Stick the end of your finger into the USB port.  The
2.0 port will feel pretty open with the contact in deeper, but the 3.0 port will feel like there are contacts right up to the edge of the opening.

On my Sabrent 10 port USB powered hub the charging ports are the 3 ports at the opposite end of where the power and USB cables plug into the hub.

How do I tell which 3 are the ones that are used to charge devices?

So far, I use all the same and they seem to function well. I also
really like having the on/off buttons.

I don’t know enough about Silencio to know if it can keep more than one sound card awake at one time.  I suspect it only sends audio to the default sound  card.  Others may know if my suspicion is correct.

Hi Monte,

I'm not sure of what exactly you're asking.  You're using 2 soundcards and have your default system sounds come through the onboard soundcard and NVDA play through the USB soundcard, so what is it you are asking?

Cheers,

Silenzio is a small utility that will continuously play a WAV file which will not let your computer's soundcard sleep.

Hi guys

Prior to me upgrading to Windows 10 I would receive an email with several attachments, all I would do is it enter and the email would open the attachment. I could close this attachment and return to the email locate the next attachment and hit enter again to read the next attachment.

Now with Windows 10 I will locate the attachment hit enter to open it when I have finished with it I can close it. Unfortunately when I go back to email to move to the next attachment it will not focus on the next attachment therefore not allowing me to open the next attachment. If I close the email and reopen it then I can go back to the attachments and find the next attachment and open it.

Do you guys have any idea why this is and what do I need to change on my settings to stop having to do this
