Re: Laptop and Keyboard Question Please.

How is it connected?  If it is a USB keyboard, it should work.  There may be an adapter you can purchase if the keyboard isn’t connected by a USB connector.  Someone else who knows more about adapters can discuss the question.

Subject: [TechTalk] Laptop and Keyboard Question Please.

Hi Everyone,

Well, here I am with another question.  Now that I can’t get my Windows Seven to boot up, can I plug in my keyboard from Windows Seven to my Windows Ten Laptop? If so, what might I have to do to master this task? I’m only using my Windows Ten Laptop, in which I find one hell of a struggle!  LOL!  I can’t stand the keys on this Laptop, and I don’t want to buy a new computer just yet, because I heard Windows 11 has been released recently, and I am currently still learning Windows 10, as well as learning to use a Laptop as opposed to using a Desktop.  Chances of me ever buying another Laptop are very slim!  Although, I will keep this Laptop as a backup once I finally get a Desktop.

Thank you all for any suggestions.

Janet So, one challenge at a time!  LOL!

Hi Janet.

Is your keyboard USB?

If so, just unplug it from the desktop computer and plug it in to one of the USB ports on your laptop and you should be good to go.

Re: google standard view, I hate it!

Abbie Taylor

Hi, David, actually, I find Gmail standard view more efficient than basic html view. The trick with NVDA or JAWS is to keep it in forms mode when browsing the message list. Once in this mode, there are a variety of keyboard shortcuts to perform certain functions.

When you find a message you want to open, press Enter. You can delete a message from the list by selecting it with the X key, then pressing Shift plus 3, the number sign. You can select and delete multiple messages this way. Pressing the applications key once a message is selected opens a context menu where you'll find such options as replying to, forwarding, and moving the message.

When a message is open, you can have your speech read it automatically by pressing N. In conversation view, this shortcut navigates you from one message to the next. To reply, press R. To reply to all, press A. To delete the message, press the number sign. To move it, press V.

To compose a new message, press C. If you type the first few letters of the recipient's name or email address, it should come up. To CC somebody, press Control plus Shift plus C To BCC somebody, press Shift plus Control plus B. To attach a file, simply tab until you hear, "Attach files."

Please keep in mind that the keyboard shortcuts I just gave you only work when you're in forms mode. If you toggle to browse mode, you can navigate by headings, links, etc. You'll find a complete list of keyboard shortcuts by pressing a button that says, "Using Gmail with Screen Readers," located near the top of the page while you're in the message list. I hope all this is helpful.

Hi Mike,

Thank you so much for this, as it has been so long since I made this change, that I actually forgot all about that!  LOL! I did follow the steps you sent me, and it worked like a charm, and I opened Brave and filled out the survey online I wanted to fill out, so now, or maybe I should say so far all is well.  Thank you again!

It sounds like forms mode might be set to automatic.  Try the following while in Brave.

1. Open the Settings Center in either of these 2 ways.
A. Press, Insert / Jaws Key + 6, on the number row above the main keyboard.
B. Press, Insert / Jaws Key + F2, to open the, Jaws Manager, arrow down to, Settings Center, & press enter.

2. Down arrow to, Forms mode, and right arrow to open.

3. Down arrow to, Select forms mode... your selection will be spoken.  i.e, Select forms mode automatic, for example.  Use the spacebar to toggle through your options.  Below is the 3 options explained:

Use radio buttons in this group to automatically or manually enter Forms Mode. Select Auto to automatically enter Forms Mode when you press TAB, SHIFT+TAB, or the ARROW Keys to move to a control. Auto Forms Mode means that you can freely type in the edit field without having to first press ENTER. When you exit the control, Forms Mode turns off. This functionality can be very useful for new and sighted JAWS users. Auto Forms Mode is on by default. Select Manual to manually control Forms Mode operation. Manual Forms Mode is used by default when using Navigation Quick Keys to jump to a form control, such as F or E for the next form field or edit box. This means that when you move into an edit field or combo box control, you must press ENTER first to type text or select a value. To manually exit Forms Mode, press NUM PAD PLUS or ESC.
Select Semi-auto to have JAWS automatically enter Forms mode only when TAB or SHIFT+TAB is pressed to move to a form control. Moving to a form control using Navigation Quick Keys and ARROW keys will not activate Forms Mode. You must manually exit Forms Mode when Semi-auto is active. Using Manual or Semi-auto Forms Mode may be better suited for experienced users.
Note: When Forms Mode is on, Say Line or Say All reads all text on the current line. This includes labels and descriptions.

Stay safe & take care.  Mike.
Just once, I want a username and password prompt to say:  "Close Enough!"

Subject: [TechTalk] Brave Help Please.

Hi Everyone,

I don’t like and don’t want to use Windows Mail anymore, so I now need to decide on another email program, as my personal opinion of Windows Mail, is just too many issues.  Now for my other problem, when trying to fill out a survey through a link I got from an email, I keep checking the boxes I want to check, as well as adding other information using Brave as my browser, but it seems as soon as I get to an edit box rather to fill out the edit box or just browsing through the web page, I hear a pop up sound, and can’t move any where like I’m stuck in that edit field until I press the escape key.  Does anyone have any ideas why this might be happening? I never had this problem when using Windows ‘seven.

Thank you all in advance.

The mail app is real buggy, if you are say using jaws, it usually crashes either the mail app or jaws. I noticed lately, it is doing the same thing with NVDA. I have not used narrator to see if it happens too using that screenreader. I would advise you to use thunder bird or outlook if you have it. The mail app also seems to lose messages out right. But if you want to use the mail app, can I suggest you check your mail with 2 programs so if you lose messages in the mail app, they will still be there with the other program. I routinely check mail with 2 programs incase one crashes or loses messages. It does happen and glad I check with 2 programs.

I have outlook, thunder bird and I use the mail app mainly for one of my accounts. But, I have been using thunderbird with outlook. Cant decide which one I like the best.

It sounds as though something in the message is stopping your screen-reader from speaking.  You might try a different screen-reader to see if it speaks when the message is opened.  You might try Narrator, but someone else would have to tell you how to run it and try to read in the message with it if you don’t know.  I don’t have Windows 10 and I know very little about Narrator.

Something else you can try is forwarding the message to someone like me or someone else and see if they can read it.  If they can, they can probably copy and paste the text into a new message and send it to you.  That might solve the problem, especially if they only paste text and nothing else in the message.  There would be no code from the original message to cause problems.

Since we don’t know what the problem is, you might want to forward it to someone who doesn’t use your e-mail program.  I use Windows Live Mail.  other people you know may well use other programs than you are using.

There may be some code in the message that causes your screen[-reader not to speak when you are in the window.  the easiest thing to do might be the following:

Open the message.  Then, even if you have no speech, use the control a command.  Then copy what is selected to the clipboard in the usual control c way.  Close the message and get speech back.

Open Notepad and paste into it.  Is the text there?  It shouldn’t have anything in it that would interfere with your screen-reader

Hi Everyone,

I’m having a very difficult time with this Windows Mail, so I would greatly appreciate some help how to stop Edge Browser from opening when I open a link in an email message.  I have Brave set as my default browser, and I set it like that through Brave’s menu, and through my Windows Ten Laptop, but I don’t remember now how I set it through my Laptop, because I lost some of my tutorials some weeks ago when my Windows Seven stopped working.  Although, my main problem is when I get an email from my local newspaper, and I open the link to go to the web site to read it, this Edge browser pops up, and I can’t fill out any edit fields.  I’ve tried going through the brave settings again to set it again as my default, but all I get then is Edge settings, and I looked through those settings to see if I could find a setting in there to disable Edge, but there is no setting to get rid of him, and this is driving me nuts.  I also get updates from my Aldermen, and when I press enter to open the email, NVDA or JAWS is completely silent, so I can’t read those emails either.  So, can someone please tell me how I can finally stop this Edge from popping up.

I’m not sure what the problem is.  Does your screen-reader speak when the message is opened at all?  For example, when you read the title bar, is that spoken?  I’m trying to figure out if the screen-reader isn’t speaking or if it isn’t reading any text in the message.

Hi Gene,

Ok, I just opened the message, selected all the text, copied, closed  mail, copied to clip board, copied in note pad, I still heard nothing.  I didn’t have this problem reading this particular email when I was using Windows Seven though, this just started happening as I have to use Windows Ten Laptop, or Windows Mail.  Not sure why or if that might have anything to do with it though.

HI,

Thank you for this.  I did as you said, and it did work, but I’m hoping this setting will hold, as I did this before, but for some reason it keeps changing though.  I did try it out after I reset Brave back to default, and it did let me go to the web site using Brave.  I still just can’t open an email I get from my Aldermen of the ward where I live.  When I open his email, NVDA as well as JAWS just goes completely silent.  Do you have any ideas why this might be?

Thank you again,

Thank you all for any help.

I have noticed this on many sites with edit fields.  If you get stuck in the edit field, the only thing that will get you out is the escape key.  At least, that has been my experience.

I’m not sure how you are using.  I don’t recall which screen-reader you are using but whatever the case, I think you should turn automatic switching between the virtual pc cursor and forms mode off as the states are called in JAWS.  In NVDA, they are called browse and focus mode.  The sounds you are hearing are notifications that you have changed from one mode to another.  If you want the notifications to be spoken rather than indicated with a sound, you can change that as well.

As far as using another e-mail program, I use Windows Live Mail.  You will have to get the installation file from someone if you want to use it because Microsoft doesn’t support or distribute it any longer.

On my machine, I’ve heard different reports from different people using different machines, it opens messages faster than Thunderbird.  Aside from that, I don’t have much preference between the programs.

I would think most people remain online while looking at e-mail so this may not be an inconvenience.  Of course, some people would look at mail off line.  But if you are online, do messages disa;ppear and then reappear as they are automatically downloaded again or does this problem only occur when you are off line?

There may be some code in the message that causes your screen[-reader not to speak when you are in the window.  the easiest thing to do might be the following:

Open the message.  Then, even if you have no speech, use the control a command.  Then copy what is selected to the clipboard in the usual control c way.  Close the message and get speech back.

Open Notepad and paste into it.  Is the text there?  It shouldn’t have anything in it that would interfere with your screen-reader

I’m pretty sure there is text in the mail though.  The only way I can get either screen reader to start reading is to press the alt plus f4 to close out the  entire email program.

Could it be that it is an image and no text? Does JAWS start speaking if you close that email?

Janet

Thank you all for any help.

Janet

I’ve never used thunderbird.

Is it  more responsive than outlook?

I’ve got a very old Surface Pro PC with 4GB of ram and 64 GB of storage running  a third gen I5 processor that I’ve  tried outlook on..

Outlook is a bit sluggage on that with Jaws. Manageable but sluggage.

The mail app while not sluggage the only problem I have with it is that when I hit enter to open a message  and read it, once I hit escape it always brings me to the navigation bar.

Then I have to shift tab to get to the message list. Plus outlook has a spellcheck.

Its only that particular pc that  has problems with outlook mainly because of the ram I think.

Gene,

After I open the message, sometimes I hear a message saying reading pane, but most of the time, I don’t hear anything.  When I use the title bar, I don’t hear anything, no matter which key I press, I don’t hear anything.
