jaws configuration to change but I'm unsure what it's called! lol

Kimsan <kimsansong@...>

Hi,

For example, on fb, if someone posts a meem, or a photo, in the past jaws would say photo, followed by blab la bla. Now it doesn’t say it on fb, since it’s the site I use most times.

Does anyone know the term I am talking about? I’m using jfw 22.

Thank you,

Kimsan Song

Re: JFW & Narrator

I can’t do more than bguess as to why you were sent the manual.  Perhaps what you want to do can’t be done and the person wanted to give you information to use Narrator.  I’ve heard from a comment on a list recently that Narrator has recently changed many of its commands to make it more in conformance with JAWS and NVDA commands.
But I have seen nothing indicating that there is any way to change Narrator to make it emulate another screen-reader.

the person may have sent you the link so you can have all the information about using Narrator in one place.

Hello,

Can someone explain how I can setup, Narrator to simulate jaws key board?

I have heard that narrator, has made changes which will, make narrator, work as a screen reader you are use to  using.

I’ve used jaws for a long time, but need to use narrator for now.

Thanks in advance for any help provided.

You should be able to press insert Plus the letter B as in Bravo and JAWS will read you that dialog. It usually means there are files Windows thinks are important, but usually are not. When I get this Dialog, it's usually a JPEG like a book or album cover that's been copied into a folder that Windows calls a system file even though I don't think pictures/images are system files. I just press alt plus Y and move on.

I=Otherwise, Explorer isn't that different from earlier versions of Windows.

Right, I hid them from the system tray, not removed them.

Oh by the way, you might have disable it from showing on the systemtray or notification tray but, it's still running.

My suggestion is, if you are not using it, just remove it through the add/remove program.

There is a section on that in the guide - there isn't an exact correlation to the Jaws cursor, but several commands depending on exactly where you are / what you are trying to do.

With screen shade, yes, we call it screen curtain.  You can activate it from the NVDA settings.  We did include the ability to activate it with a gesture, but there isn't one assigned.  I included the steps for that and more information in our In-Process blog when we first introduced the feature here: https://www.nvaccess.org/post/in-process-19th-february-2020/#ScreenCurtain

Try using NVDA space when on a web page.  Because of default settings, you will hear a sound when you switch modes, one sound for browse mode and the other for focus mode.  Try up and down arrowing after you issue the command and see what happens.  Then, if you can’t move, try the command again and try arrowing.

Yo Dog,

In NVDA when you're in Browse mode this is like using the virtual cursor or when forms mode is inactive with Jaws.

When in Focus mode in NVDA this is like using the PC cursor or when forms mode active with Jaws.

If using the command NVDA space works, go into browse mode settings, control NVDA b and tab to Enable browse mode on page load.  It’s a check box.  Check it with the space bar.  That will eliminate the problem.

The setting is on by default so you shouldn’t have the problem if you install or make portable copies in the future.

I expect it is the same as with NVDA because of the ways accessibility is implemented in the program.  I won't go into that here but in one or two ways, accessibility is better in 2.x versions.  But you can use the download log, which you can look at while downloading to work around the download information you don't see.  That is the main difference between 2.x and 3.x, you see more download information in the program itself.  I am referring to information such as download speed and estimated completion time.

If you are going to download files in the MP3 format, the 3.x series has a major advantage.  You can set the bit rate for MP3 conversions.  In 2.x, the bit rate is set for something like 128KBPS, which is alright for listening with small headphones but which isn't at all satisfactory for those interested in good sounds.

If there are other differences that matter, I'll let others discuss them.

There is one more thing I should point out in terms of accessibility.  With NVDA, and I would think with JAWS, in the 3.x series, when  you press alt, to start moving through a menu, you have to down arrow twice.  I haven't tried up arrowing  immediately after opening a menu.  Also, the name of the menu is not read.  You can right arrow and left arrow to move from menu to menu but you won't hear the names announced.  I don't recall if you have to down arrow twice every time you move to a new menu to start moving.
