Joseph: thanks for your help

Bill K <billmeister@...>

Hi Joseph,
I really liked your idea of how to select a default player, I went right there and sure enough, it worked just as you've said.
right now I have so many questions about windows 10 that I hardly know where to start, but in my last post, I posed a question that I'd like to see what your thoughts are on it.

Oh, while I'm here, I have another puzzler that I can't figure what to do about. Ever since I put windows 10 in, I suddenly can't use my headphone jack on the computer, can you suggest a place I might go to check on this? also, I'm going to be ordering a new headphones and mike and I wonder when I get it if you might suggest how I check the mike to see if the level is where i'm going to want it.
Many thanks,
Bill K.

windows 10 default programs

Bill K <billmeister@...>

Hi Carols,
Many thanks for your help on windows 10, wow, I sure wasn't ready for that one.
I also appreciate the feedback from the rest of you.

Now, I have another question for you. You all have been talking about Outlook express, I wonder if it's possible to use outlook express with windows 10, and if so, where do I get the program, or how do I access it?

Oh, does anyone know a good program that doesn't cost much that I can use to clean up my pc?
Many thanks,
Bill K.

Re: New member and windows question.

haha I read that same article last night. I always thought of myself
as a nerd because I have a wealth of knowledge ... one full of useless
factoids. My Uncle Jerry likes it when I visit because we are awesome
Jeopardy buddies. Last time I answered something and he said to me
"wow, Missy you *are* a nerd...."
It is not my fault that things like that stick in my head and things
that I want to, like proper grammar and punctuation useage, don't.
Back when I was still able to play MMORPGs, like Everquest and WoW,
guild members would just throw out a random seeming question like
where to buy this or how to do this and I would know these things no
matter how obscure, if I read it once I always remembered. That is
until I didn't need it anymore, then I would forget it promptly. lol

People weren't bickering about who can help the best. One member of
the list insulted other list members repeatedly. If the list had been
properly moderated, the insulting conduct would have been stopped
immediately. As one member who was repeatedly insulted and talked
down to by the member, I resent your characterization. I did not
bicker and whine. If someone publicly talks down to me on a list or
states that I am providing dangerous solutions to problems when they
are not,I am going to publicly defend myself and others have the right
to do so as well. And it's not just a question of people defending
themselves. New members come to lists all the time. If someone
inaccurately disparages another members advice, indicating that is
dangerous or inadequate when it is not, then the person who is
disparaged should have the right to defend their answers so that new list members won't form erroneous opinions about who is giving good advice.

This list, which will be properly moderated, should not have any
such problems.

Hi, well, there is several ways you can do this install
windows on the Mac. One thru a virtual windows and the other is thru boot camp ..
Which boot camp is fairly like just installing windows like on any
hard drive. I think I would prefer boot camp to a virtual windows but
it is a choice. Now if you not going to use this thing as your primary machine you
might not want to get the latest and greatest . You might want to if
thinking of a lap top go with the Mac book air the13 inch or the 11 inch.
They also have brought back the mac book as well so that might be
worth looking at. But all this being said this late in the year I
think I would wait for the new ones to come out. JST !

First, greetings to you all here in the new list and a lot
of thanks to Carlos, who helps all of us everywhere.
Now my thoughts:
I’m using for fourteen years or so the system operation of
Microsoft.
Now, I use Win 7 pro and think to upgrade it – when Jaws
17 is out, soon.
I’ve two laptops, one is 8 years and the other one is five
years old.
I think to start now using the laptop of Apple and as I do
understand – I’mtalking about MACBOOK PRO.
I really wish to get your thoughts, your experience with
that machine.
which one do I have to purchase and any other helpful
information.
I’ve read about it but really don’t have any experience
and the world and the way Apple acts with its systems.
Again, I do understand that it is a very general question
but any information, any experience will be greatly appreciated.
I’m totally blind and use Braille Display and it’s a very
important point for me.
I also know that I can install the system of Microsoft on
these machine of Apple and wish to know how really this works.
thanks for any output.

I haven't installed it on any of my machines yet but I did install it on my GF's laptop and she left it with me for a few days. I really liked windows 10. Especially the Cortana. I have cortana on my windows phone but I really liked the hey Cortana feature on the PC. I also installed a few of my programs while I was at it just to see how they would work.
Audacity, File Shredder, MP3 direct cut, Total Recorder, and VipMud, all did fine except for MP3 direct cut. When I tried installing it I got this error message:

FreeExtractor Error dialog
An error prevents this program from continuing: Could not extract the current file. Access is denied.

have much use for any of the new features and a couple of things that I need
to work just didn't. I did however create an image of the installation so I
can just switch back and forth between 7 and 10 when ever I'm in the mood.
Next is purchasing a new solid state drive that I've been looking at so I
can set it up in a dual boot configuration. For my own personal use I don't
really care for 10, but setting it up in a dual boot configuration will make
it easier to assist others on the list who are running it.

Hi Bill,
First, welcome to the list.
To select a different player to be your default player, follow these
steps:
1. Press Windows+I to open Settings.
2. From Settings, navigate to System/Default apps and press ENTER..
3. Press TAB until you land on music. Press SPACE, then use TAB to
select the player you want and press ENTER. Do this for the video app.
Regarding opinions and other Windows 10 goodies, what would you like
to know? In terms of system security and privacy, it depends (some
say it's good, while others say it's a bad thing). Regarding
accessibility, I can testify that it is a work in progress (nowadays
I'm investigating accessibility of various so-called universal Windows
apps with NVDA).
In regards to screen reader, I'm the resident NVDA developer here so
I can tell you how NVDA does things with Windows 10, and we do have
expert screen reader users (like Gene asner and Carlos) who can tell
you about how their screen readers work with Windows 10.
Cheers,
Joseph

Hello, Has anyone on here heard of a file sharing program called Tonido?
Can it be used on the Iphone using voice over. Any information will be
very much appreciated.

Yep LOL, they unsubscribed us for off topic messages. I bet I haven't
posted to that list no more than 10 times in a year and bam, without any
explaination I get kicked off. It's not the unsubscribing that ticks me so
bad just the absolute no word as to why until I inquired. They said I could
resubscribe when I wanted ... I wrote back "no thanks"

Hi, has something happened with the jaws users list? I got a message earlier
in the week saying that I had been unsubscribed. I’ve sent a msg to
resubscribe but nothing ...

Hi Everyone,
I'm one of the new guys and am wondering if we have any windows 10 users
here.
what I'm particularly wanting to know is can you choose your player of
choice to be used instead of that groove music thing? If so, please tell me
how I do this.
many thanks,

Re: software to determine how many on my network

Carlos

Agreed, if you simply want to be able to kick devices from the network for some reason that is one thing, but if you have not already done so then you should definitely secure it with a password as Matt suggests.

Note that the same developer also has another similar utility called
WhoIsConnectedSniffer,
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/who_is_connected_sniffer.html
but unlike Wireless Network Watcher it requires that you install a capture
driver.

Yes, that is more than likely how I will do it is a dual boot if I ever put
it on my main PC! Which at this time is the only PC I have.

Thanks,

I installed it and played around with it for a few days, but I didn't really
have much use for any of the new features and a couple of things that I need
to work just didn't.

Hello Jessica,
I don't have Windows 10 installed at the moment so I'm afraid I can't
offer much direct assistance. There seem to be quite a few articles,
but unfortunately most of them are not written with an accessible
point of view in mind. You can try this one and see if it helps.

Hi
Can someone please help me set up Cortana?
How can I do this?
I'm using the latest version of NVDA.

Hi Bill,
First, welcome to the list.
I'm investigating accessibility of various so-called universal
Windows
apps with NVDA).
In regards to screen reader, I'm the resident NVDA developer here so
I can tell you how NVDA does things with Windows 10, and we do have
expert screen reader users (like Gene asner and Carlos) who can tell
you about how their screen readers work with Windows 10.
Cheers,
Joseph
