When you get the book on the now playing page there should be a button which, I believe says audio setting. In that dialog box you can choose any of the voices you have purchased to read the current book. Hope this helps.

Re: Directed messages

Flor Lynch

Rajmund and all:

This is not disputing any of the foregoing in this thread.

There are many people who don't know what a 'conversation' or 'thread' means in email terms. I've come across a few people who simply thought that, by changing the subject line in an existing message thread as they contribute their own message, they were writing a new - even original - message. And neither did they know (until I told them) that their message would come out in an existing thread for other subscribers who appreaciate and know the value of organizing emails by conversation view. Alsom, there appear to be some differences between how conversations/threads are defined by different receiving email clients.

So it's best, if you're writing on a completely unrelated subject, of course to begin a *completely* separte new message: or, as was said already by Carlos and others, if your message is different (but still related at least somewhat to the original) - to indicate or mark this in the subject field in a noticeable way.

Hi,
If let's say, I speak about IPhone, and you then ask about the differences between apple and android, yes, that is related. But I often see someone asking something about gmail, and there's something totally unrelated below. Literally, all that needs to be done, is a select all, and delete.

I agree that you should start with a new message/subject if the topic is
completely unrelated to the original one, but I believe that modifying the
subject with a reference to the original topic is acceptable if it is at
least related.

Hi,
Can I add 2 things, please?
Keep the original message, and if possible, please, when you start a new
subject, and if a new thread, please, start a new message. I never liked
when the subject says microwaves, but turns out that the microwaves
message became a new thread from used laptops, let's say.

I agree with this and I would also like to emphasize keeping subject
lines consistent in general. I.E. If you would like to begin a different
discussion, simply start with a new message. Or if what you have to say
is at least related to the thread to which you are responding, but may
significantly side track the conversation, at least change the subject to
reflect this. I will have to work to follow this rule myself since I
have not always been careful enough in this respect.

Believe me, it is not my desire to cause a problem. But I am starting to
see a problem on this list that frustrated me on the other list,
specifically Blindtech. I am talking about the practice of directing
messages to a specific individual in the subject line. I respectfully
suggest that if anyone wants to direct his message to an individual that
he do so via private email. I say that because it screws up the sorting
of threads badly when the actual subject is preceeded by the name of an
individual.

Hi all,

Gene you mean you are actually expecting this profligate generation to stop overquoting? The *only* place on the net where overquoting is strictly managed is on any of the ICORS lists like Blind-x.

Getting people to quit overquoting is like pulling teeth or sending water uphill or yelling at the bottom of a well filled with fethers. They don't get it. They won't ever get it unless the list owner starts out by suspending offenders, yeah, I mean it. They won't learn unless the listowner has the hutz-pah to crack down on overquoting. Won't happen. That reminds me, I have to post my semi-annual warning on blind-x about overquoting.

Chuckling sardonically,
Ann P.

Original message:

This is a ridiculous practice. Someone starts a new thread, gives it a new subject line, and doesn't delete the previous material from the message body before writing a new message. So nothing quoted in the message has any relevance. (In my view, list owners should really crack down on this. It is a complete waste of useage limits if someone is on some sort of restricted plan. It makes digests larger for no valid reason. Sometimes eight or ten or more previous messages are retained. thus, list members may receive the equivalent of eleven or twelve messages instead of one.

People weren't bickering about who can help the best. One member of
the list insulted other list members repeatedly. If the list had been
properly moderated, the insulting conduct would have been stopped
immediately. As one member who was repeatedly insulted and talked
down to by the member, I resent your characterization. I did not
bicker and whine. If someone publicly talks down to me on a list or
states that I am providing dangerous solutions to problems when they
are not,I am going to publicly defend myself and others have the right
to do so as well. And it's not just a question of people defending
themselves. New members come to lists all the time. If someone
inaccurately disparages another members advice, indicating that is
dangerous or inadequate when it is not, then the person who is
disparaged should have the right to defend their answers so that new list members won't form erroneous opinions about who is giving good advice.

This list, which will be properly moderated, should not have any
such problems.

Hi, well, there is several ways you can do this install
windows on the Mac. One thru a virtual windows and the other is thru boot camp ...
Which boot camp is fairly like just installing windows like on any
hard drive. I think I would prefer boot camp to a virtual windows but
it is a choice. Now if you not going to use this thing as your primary machine you
might not want to get the latest and greatest . You might want to if
thinking of a lap top go with the Mac book air the13 inch or the 11 inch.
They also have brought back the mac book as well so that might be
worth looking at. But all this being said this late in the year I
think I would wait for the new ones to come out. JST !

Now my thoughts:
I’m using for fourteen years or so the system operation of
Microsoft.
Now, I use Win 7 pro and think to upgrade it – when Jaws
17 is out, soon.
I’ve two laptops, one is 8 years and the other one is five
years old.
I think to start now using the laptop of Apple and as I do
understand – I’mtalking about MACBOOK PRO.
I really wish to get your thoughts, your experience with
that machine.
which one do I have to purchase and any other helpful
information.
I’ve read about it but really don’t have any experience
and the world and the way Apple acts with its systems.
Again, I do understand that it is a very general question
but any information, any experience will be greatly appreciated.
I’m totally blind and use Braille Display and it’s a very
important point for me.
I also know that I can install the system of Microsoft on
these machine of Apple and wish to know how really this works.
thanks for any output.

RE appointing moderators.  Yes, this is a job which should be done carefully.  However, I would strongly suggest that you do appoint at least one moderator if only for security reasons.  You may go away for a vacation, suddenly become ill, or God forbid, vacate this plain entirely.  Don't laugh, folks, it's happened.  If you appoint somebody to moderate, there will be somebody here if you can't be here for whatever reason.

Unfortunately, I do not have the time to moderate this high traffic list, wish I did, but I'm sure you can find others who would step in.  I do urge you to appoint somebody fairly quickly.

Carlos, you did very well to send out so many invitations, (in a rather short period of time, too. LOL.) What’s happening here is like the peak days of BlindTech; and they haven’t happened for quite a while.

179 members in a bit less than a week is not too bad.  At least in my opinion.  If the number of members does not increase significantly over the next 2 or 3 weeks, then some promotion might not be unreasonable, but just keep in mind that some members already seem to be having a problem with the amount of traffic.

Re: Tbird threads

Quentin Christensen

No it's not you, it's some users who use e-mail clients (like on the BrailleNote) which don't pass the message ID properly.

Every email you send has a unique message ID, when you reply to someone on a list like this, your email client SHOULD send the new message ID, as well as a line to indicate the message ID you are replying to. When that happens, programs like Thunderbird know how to order the messages.

If you look in GMail's web interface for instance, it does group all the messages, but very crudely and purely based on the subject and in order of the time sent - so if we keep having this discussion here, but two others are discussing Windows 10 at the same time in another part of the thread (your message came as a reply on that thread), then the messages will appear jumbled together in GMail, but be sorted properly in Thunderbird.

Regards

Quentin.

Re: lowest bit rate for audio books?

Donald L. Roberts

I must respectfully disagree.  I realize that this is very subjective, but for spoken word files, 32 – 22 mono works great and doesn’t use a ton of space.  Many persons have data caps; and for example, putting those training files at 360 K was an extremely poor choice on someone’s part.

Carlos, I'm with you; I don't want it lower than 64. I want the reading to
be clear, and if it's much lower than this, it isn't to me. If someone can
hear it lower and think it sounds clear enough, then go for it.

This question usually causes a bit of controversy.  In my opinion, about 64.
Although many will say that for spoken material it doesn't really matter.
