Re: Charter e-mail accounts

Carolyn Arnold

Charter did not demonstrate good customer service at all, when I called to
change automatic withdrawal from my bank account to our bank account when
Jim and I married. He loves the story - (compressed here), talked an hour,
all kind of supervisors, wanted me to go on line. I said I was blind, not
that proficient with net needed to do this by phone, but their policy was
only changes online. I finally told a district manager that a policy, which
I respected, was made and devised by man. While I respected policy I was
asking that there be a change, exception, modification, correction, whatever
they wanted to label it, because policy was created by man, while my
blindness came from God, could not be changed, revised, modified, was going
nowhere. They made the change for me, but it was like pulling a cat's teeth.

Carolyn

I was told that several months ago.

I mean it's irrelevant at this point for me, as I can't or don't even know
my charter email. Simple call, but the password and not knowing is an issue.
Charter didn't bother to help me and simply stated to go onto the site to
reset my password.

Now, this was my experience which is why I said the hell with it and went
with gmail.

Hi Gene & All,

In talking to a Charter representative a couple of weeks ago, I was told
that sometime in the real near future Charter is going to stop their support
of POP3, & from what this representative said, it will be without warning!
Others may get different answers from various Charter representatives, but I
can only relay what I was told.

Take care.

I didn't save messages from the previous thread but I wanted to respond
after doing a little looking around. This page:

https://www.myaccount.charter.com/customers/support.aspx?supportarticleid=14
17

discusses different e-mail settings. I didn't read the entire page but I
read quite a bit of it. It appears very likely that Charter does, in fact,
provide Pop3 accounts if that is what you want to use. The page gives
settings for different kinds of accounts.

Well, if it is the ‘mobile page’ it doesn’t open in Safari on iOS8.4.1, the latest iOS full iteration. The feed URL, however, opens in a mobile podcatcher, as it should, and as an RSS Feed on the PC, as so it should.

That is all well and good but I haven't a clue on how to do that. I am not that good with the computer I am that novice who is afraid to break things and sometimes the intermediate computer user. If you can assist me in how to do that I would appreciate that for the most part I don't really have too much to say because I would rather listen to learn but once in a while I might like to respond to ask for more information or something along those lines. Have a great day.

This is a known problem. I have to issue the command Windows key m twice
almost every time I want to return to the desktop. If you want to avoid the

problem in Windows 7 and I've seen others discuss it as well. I wouldn't be
surprised if many users in Windows 7 and higher have this problem.

just says start. I have to do it a second time to get to the desktop.

I thought this might be a keyboard issue, so I went and bought a new

Any suggestions?

Hi,
With all due respect I question the necessity of doing such.  It’s been my experience that lists like other living organisms grow best when tended well and left to their own devices and timing.
It seems to me that through word of mouth people who are meant to find their way here will in due course.

I've been thinking a bit about how to promote the list.  I'm not sure about this, but I think the person who edits Top Tech Tidbits would be willing to run an item about the list.  Perhaps other list members would have other suggestions.  I would say to wait before sending announcements to various places until this is discussed further but a little promotion might bring in many more members.

I did post a classified on Blind Bargains as a couple of members suggested, but I don't personally belong to any social networks.

Here's another thought when it comes to promoting the list if and when needed. Why not use Facebook; Wordpress; and any other social media that you maybe on.

Hi Carlos and list,

I like a lot of traffic.  The more questions and answers that come in to my TechTalk  folder, the more opportunities I have to learn as a computer user.  And, eventually, the more opportunities I will have to assist others.  I can always hit the delete key if I am not interested in a topic.

Many thanks to Carlos and all who work to make this list work so well.

179 members in a bit less than a week is not too bad.  At least in my opinion.  If the number of members does not increase significantly over the next 2 or 3 weeks, then some promotion might not be unreasonable, but just keep in mind that some members already seem to be having a problem with the amount of traffic.

What’s the name of the podcast? In the podcatching clients that I have on my iPhone, I know of DownCast and RSSRadio, it’s best to search by the podcast title.

Hi
I found a podcast I want to subscribe to, but icatcher; my podcast player of choice, says the link is invalid.
I have emailed the developer, and I'm waiting for response. In the meantime, I was wondering if one of you guys could help me.
How could I subscribed to this podcast?
Here's the link,

Thanks,
Jessica

When I use firefox to follow the link, a web page comes up showing various editions of a program.  However, the page contains no information about how to subscribe and it doesn't look like a podcast subscription page to me, at least not the few I've seen.  I don't subscribe to podcasts, I listen to them now and then but not by subscribing.  I don't think this page is the subscription page.  It looks like a page where people can listen to the podcasts without subscribing.

Re: converting PDF and retaining paragraph format

Flor Lynch

Gene,

So it appears. But, when you replace the zzz or similarly exotic string of characters that was used to replace the ^n line-breaks – which are not distinguished in the original pdf from the ^l or soft line-breaks – in the manner as I outlined, you will get an approximation of the original paragraph formatting. Remember also that the original formatting HAS BEEN LOST when the pdf was converted into another file format. There are some pdf-to html converters around, but they end up adding extra lines to the output in htmn. Adobe Reader has it downsides, too, and loss of formatting is one. I don’t know if Adobe Professional does a better job; perhaps it does. OCR on a PDF image might also do a good job. But none of them (so far as I know) does a perfect original format retention job.

but it appears that your procedure deletes all hard returns.  That is not what is wanted.  Paragraph divisions are still wanted.  The problem is that every soft return is made into a hard return.  The point is not to delete all hard returns.  The point is to have soft returns except where paragraphs begin.

If you convert any document from a word processor or html format to a txt format, all soft returns will be converted into hard returns.  There is no soft return in the txt character set, if that is the correct term.  But if you convert the file to a word processor format and the same thing occurs, that is, all soft returns are converted to hard returns, then the subject should be discussed further.  If a word processor format retains soft returns, that should solve the problem.

One might also want to delete right parentheses, apostrophes, and some other punctuation marks just  preceding hard returns, such as: )^zzz with )^n; ‘zzz with ‘^n; !zzz with !^n; ?zzz with ?^n, (in step 5 per the scheme below).

Hi Dean,

This is what I did, and it seemed to work:

1. Converted the pdf to text.

2. Select All in the text ffile, copy to clipboard.

3. Open a blank document in Microsoft Word.
3A: Paste the clipboard contents into the Word document.

4. Now we’re going to do Finding and Replacing, and the Special Characters dialogue, More... button. Find: ^n . Replace with: zzz . REPLACE ALL Button, and ENTER.

5. Find: .zzz . Replace With: .n . Replace All.

5A:  (If necessary, Find and Replace All . zzz with . ^n .....

6. Now, Find and Replace ALL zzz with nothing, leaving the replacement field empty.

7. You may require more finding and replacing, use judiciously.

HTH, and Good Luck!

I like to convert PDF documents to other formats, usually text but could be any of several others.  When I use the conversion routine built into Adobe Reader, all the line breaks are converted into hard line breaks, making it hard to find the actual paragraph boundaries.  Does anybody have a solution to this?

Re: JAWS for DOS

Monte,

Old programs written to run in DOS will run on a Windows 7 machine, 32-bit version.

The problem there is that screen reading software does not respond well, if at all, within the programs running in the DOS shell.

If JAWS for DOS can be persuaded to perform properly for those applications then the problem goes away.
