Re: require suggestion to purchase a windows 8.1 or 10 32 bit tablat

Marie <magpie.mn@...>

I recently purchased an Asus 13 inch laptop running Windows 8.1 for around aa$700 and I am delighted with it. It only has a 256 SSD drive but I bought a 1 TB external drive for around $80 so I keep most of my files, music, books, etc on it to save the internal drive for necessary programs. It is the Zen Book Ultra and is so light an thin, I think it may be lighter and thinner than most tablets once you connect the keyboard. I did not get the touch screen because I am a keyboard user and probably always will be. You can get a two in one which doubles as a tablet or a laptop but, of course that adds to the price. There are lots of choices and everyone is different so good luck and I hope you find the machine that works best for you. One word of advice which you seem to be doing is to do your homeworkd before deciding and don't get in too big a hurry.

Hi.
I've stayed a bit lower end and am very happy.
I've probably got around $700 in my lenovo server desktop with the
server grade intel i3 and 12 GB of ram.
It's a very good machine and runs well.
Plus with a good ssd in it it's very fast.
However, this question was specifically about laptops and tablets so
here's my oppinion.
Unless you are going to be walking around with a laptop or tablet i
would go laptop, for the following reasons.
A nicer keyboard. Cheaper.
Also, a lot of new laptops have touch screens available now so you can
still have the touch interface.
Here is a link to a midrange toshiba pc that i just bought this week.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TP5AXMQ?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=od_aui_detailpages00
All that i need to do now is replace the drive with an ssd and upgrade
it to 16 GB ram and i have another system that's comparible to my desktop.
As a bonus this one has a touch screen and i'll have a good system for
about $750

As you've probably guessed by now, i really wouldn't pay for a $1000
tablet over this.
If i want a tablet i'll buy an android tablet and be happy.
I prefer android's touch interface to windows anyway so that's a win for
me.

JMT.

Hence why I'm holding off....

For the i7 I had in mind it's actually $2,100, up to $2,700 for the top
of the line model - even though that's in AUD, converted to US, that's
still $1,900.

I'd like it to wash the dishes, but I suspect you're not supposed to let

it get near water ;)

Hi Austin,

Yes you definitely can use NVDA with a touch screen.

NVDA 2015.3 User Guide The command quick reference in NVDA's help
screen has the touch gesture for various commands listed.

Arguably the best Windows hybrid is Microsoft's own Surface Pro 3. The

Surface Pro 4 is due out in October, so potentially if you can wait
until then you can either buy that, or hopefully the 3 should be
reduced in price with the new release. Here's some info on what's
known on the Surface Pro 4 for now:
http://www.techtimes.com/articles/82638/20150908/surface-pro-4-features-pricing-release-date-and-everything-we-know-so-far-about-microsofts-upcoming-tablet.htm

And if you're interested in looking further afield than the Surface
pro, here's a list of 10 other hybrids:
http://www.techradar.com/au/news/mobile-computing/laptops/best-2-in-1-laptops-top-5-hybrid-laptops-reviewed-1258451

Now whether a hybrid is best for you is something you'll find as many
different opinions on as you'll find people with opinions. For my 2c:

Why you should buy a 2 in 1?
- Lighter (if you leave the keyboard at home)
- Intuitive (With a bit of an idea of layout, it can be easier dragging

your finger around the screen to find something than knowing the
keyboard shortcut).
- Ability to use a keyboard and so have all the advantages of a laptop

when you need it.

Why you should buy a proper laptop?
- Screen doesn't drain as much battery, particularly if you mostly use

keyboard functions.
- Cheaper for the same power (and arguably if you don't actually a need

a laptop, a desktop is cheaper again - I looked a couple of weeks ago,

and for $2,000 I could buy a Surface Pro 3, or I could spend about
$1,000 on a laptop or $500 on a desktop all with similar specs, or for

about $8.000 I could get a desktop with say 32 GB ram over the 8GB of
the others).
- Consistent interface (you can set Windows 10 to ALWAYS use tablet or

desktop mode, or let Continuum switch as you connect and disconnect the

keyboard) and you won't go to start writing and realise you didn't
bring the keyboard.

In the end it's up to how you think you'll use it. If the Surface Pro

3 or 4 is within your budget, it would be a great machine, but then
again, if you don't really need it, you can get something else you can

definitely do all your work on for less $$$.

I'm still debating whether to buy a 2 in 1, a laptop, or just stick
with my hard working desktop myself!

Regards

Quentin.

SanDisk iXpand flash drive

Walter Ramage

Hi all.  This is just a bit of information for your future reference if it is required.

iStick is a flash drive that can be used for transferring files from and to both PC and Apple products such as the iPhone.  This iStick is accessible and usable by the blind but I discovered that SanDisk have their own version of this called iXpand.  However I was unable to tell if this product was accessible and so just over a week ago I wrote to SanDisk and asked them.  Their response is below and I have just received it in the last 20 minutes.  The upshot is the SanDisk iXpand flash drive is not accessible on apple products.  There email is pasted below.  Walter.

Dear Walter,

I would like to inform you that we have tested iXpand Sync app with VoiceOver feature of Apple iOS, and some basic functions of application do not work properly. You will be able to access main menu of application; however it is not possible to select files manually or access drop down menu which limit usage of iXpand flash drive. I apologize for any inconvenience this issue may cause you.

Re: Intro and internet explorer question

Michael <mike122061@...>

Hello,

The first thing that you might want to check, is to see that your pop up blocker is turned on. Open the tools menu by pressing Alt + T, then arrow down to Pop Up Blocker and press enter on this as well. Now, press enter once more if it reads Turn Pop Up Blocker On.

Another solution would be to run an Ad Ware cleaner such as ADW Cleaner and this will remove many pop ups from your computer. One of these solutions should stop this behavior.

Hi,
Yes, I have tried NVDA, and yesterday when I was talking to Freedom
Scientific, they asked me to use narrator. Then we noticed that even
using narrator some parts are not very accessible. The girl in Tech
support FS told me that if narrator is not reading that part, it means
that the problem is not of jaws, it is an accessibility problem of
Microsoft.Days before Freedom Scientific told me that the spelling
dialog in word 2013 is not accessible. Also the signature dialog in
outlook 2013 is not accessible either. So I am a little bit confused
because I noticed these problems that FS told me, but I notice that
the degree of accessibility in another areas is very different in
each computer.
Why this level of accessibility change in each computer?

Hey all,
My name is Ty Littlefield; I wanted to introduce myself since I've
just joined here.

I am currently attending wentworth institute of technology for a major
in Computer Science. I'm mostly self-taught and started using a
braille lite around 12 or so, when I picked up the basic book by Dan
Zingaro and taught myself basic. Having been infected, I've done
everything I can to forget those dark times, although I'd still love
to find a Braille Lite and all the basic stuff to play with again.

My focus is on performance, systems level programming and security. I
worked at Acquia last summer where I worked on drupal 8 performance,
so that we could improve the performance before release. I also did a
bit of security work. If you're looking for a head-spin, one of the
larger projects under my belt was a profiling test which tested
patches we committed to detect regressions in performance. The test
ran in a testing framework, which installed Drupal which installed
Drupal which ran another test. So it was kind of like a test, three
times removed.

My main hobbies are mostly programming, I have a toy OS I've been
working on, as well as an open-source mud engine, written in c++ which
uses Angelscript for scripting. I'm also going to start at some point
this semester doing some web design on the side, as my time with
Drupal has given me a lot of experience.

I am also the owner of the Freelists Macvisionaries list, which has
kind of spun off of the parent list.

I look forward to this list, I hope to be as much help as possible and
learn a lot along the way.

Another cleaning utility worth mentioning is Junkware Removal Tool.
It is fairly automated and now seems to be supported by Malwarebytes Corporation.  Although it is worth noting that like DWCleaner, it will shut down all running applications including your screen reader.

hi,
it does not reboot automaticly. You need to bring your screen reader back and hit the ok button twice after cleaning is complete. Note that this can take 3-4 minutes with a highly trashed computer

Thanks Christina.  The forward is not necessary, but I appreciate the heads up.  It's good to know that word is getting around.

Re: Intro and internet explorer question

Carlos

Hi Fanus,
I don't currently have the Pro version installed so I can't be sure, but I believe it does perform a scheduled scan.  However, it is possible that by default the scheduled scan is only a quick/flash scan which does not scan the entire drive.  If so, you may wish to perform a full scan manually.  A full scan is more thorough and may find things that a quick scan will not.

Hello
Thanks. I do have Malware Bytes Pro (the accessible version) and every evening it does an update. Must I specifically tell it to scan or does it do it automatically?

Fanus

Hello Fanus and welcome to the list.
Your question is most certainly not off topic.  The purpose of the list is in part to assist others with such problems.  It sounds as if you may have some malware.  First, it would probably be a good idea for you to tell us what malware or virus scanning software if any you already have installed.  If you don't already have anything installed, Malwarebytes
http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/
has a good reputation and you can use the free version to scan your machine for malware and remove it.  Some aspects of the newer version are not very accessible so if you have any problems with it, there is an older version which is more accessible that can be downloaded here.

Subject: [TechTalk] Intro and internet explorer question

Hello list
My name is Fanus Buys and I live in South Africa.

I have a problem with IE10 in that when I open a site many times a mail voice pops up wanting to tell me how to make much money. I can not figure out where it comes from and it is louder than the jaws voice, so it is difficult to hear jaws. Is there a keystroke to block this guy from interpheering?

I hope this is not off topic and if so, I am sorry but I do not know where to ask.

Regards
Fanus

Re: Accessibility in office 2013

Was wondering which Microsoft Office would be best to get if getting
the free version of Window Eyes or if I should just pay for the
upgrades?

Hi,
Yes, I have tried NVDA, and yesterday when I was talking to Freedom

Hi all,

This shouldn't be happening, especially with Jaws and 2013. That
software's been out for quite a while. Have you tried any other screen
reader besides Jaws?
