Some SIRI Tricks You Might Not Know About

Apple's voice-activated assistant is now a well-known personality in his/her own right, but unless you've taken the time to dig into all the features that Siri offers you might not realize just how capable it is now.

Here are several ways to get Siri working harder for you.

1. Find a particular setting

Siri can not only "turn off Bluetooth" but will also help you find a setting if you don't know where it's located. Try asking to "change the font size" or "adjust the screen brightness" or "edit Safari settings," and Siri will direct you to the right options page, with no need for you to search through screens yourself.

2. Passing planes

Ask Siri "what planes are above me right now?" and you'll quickly get the results back thanks to data pulled from the FAA's database and Siri's integration with Wolfram Alpha. Unfortunately, it only works in the US for the time being, but it's a handy option to have if you're wondering where a passing plane is heading to or coming from.

 3. Setting power naps

You can tell Siri to "wake me in 40 minutes" and your iDevice's alarm will be set accordingly. This is in addition to the standard alarm clock commands that let you set an alarm for a specific time and date. If you're so jetlagged that you're not sure what time it is but you know you need an hour's shut-eye, Siri has you covered.

4. Movie reviews and times

Siri pulls in data from the Rotten Tomatoes review site, so you can ask it "how good is Finding Dory?" and get a response based on hundreds of reviews. You might have to pick from a shortlist of potential options if Siri finds several matches, but the process is still pretty painless. You can also ask "how long is The Lego Movie?" just before you sit down in your seat, and get a quick response.

5. food and drink

Not only can you search for restaurants and bars nearby, you can also look for specific types of food or beverages, whether that's sandwiches, steaks, coffee or beer. Ask Siri to "find a whiskey" and you'll get back the nearest bars and restaurants where "whiskey" is mentioned in the description or reviews. It's a handy feature to have if you've got a hankering for a particular dish or drink.

Re: How frequently do you use the Windows Narrator screen reader? #poll

Carlos

No I don't agree with that at all. As I stated in a previous message, I believe a full-blown screen reader would give Microsoft an unfair advantage and might stifle 3rd-party developers. If you have the functionality you need in a built-in solution, what reason would most consumers have to use or purchase another screen reader? If 3rd-party screen readers lost enough support, development might cease which means fewer options.

Hi.

I didn't mean it would become the only option like voice over in mac.

I meant to say it would be the best option in windows, like voice over in the mac.

I think we would all have to agree that tit would be great if narator beat out both jaws and nvda based on performance.

However, i would still want nvda as a backup.

I know this sounds impossible, and yes we have a long way to go but it seems to me that ms is trying a lot harder than they used to.

Hi.

Personally, i'm glad to see narator improvements. It's yet another option.

I don't use it on my pc, but if it ever gets good enough i may seriously consider switching to windows phone from android.

I would really like features like continuom and some of the things along that line that ms is doing.

In addition, This would make yet another accessible platform that i can use.

Who knows, maybe some day narator will become to windows what voice over is on the mac and all the other screen readers get sidelined because they aren't keeping up.

I'm sure Microsoft already receives more than enough feedback, but like most large corporations they prioritize based on some secret formula unknown to the rest of us which usually has little to do with what consumers are actually requesting. In other words, they hear what they choose to hear and then do what they want to do.

So far it seems that the only time anyone uses Narrator is as a backup, for emergencies, to finish setting up Windows, or for testing purposes. Since none of these new features significantly impact any of these scenarios except for testing, who exactly is benefiting from these improvements? As I said, for now Microsoft would be better off investing more time and effort improving accessibility in other areas. Until or unless Microsoft decides to turn it into a full-blown screen reader, these improvements to Narrator which almost no one will use are a waste of effort.

Hmm, don't know wonder if it was ever reported? Have you reported it ? What
iPhone do you have? Just wonder if it is only with certain models and so on?
I have not notice the problem as I keep hints turn on by default as you have
to have it turn on for certain apps in order to use it with VO. Since I can

till I need to know something it is telling me.

ever since I remember, across 9, you need hints to have them read. But, it
might be like that since 6, as I say, I haven't used anything before 9.

Hi,
You're misunderstanding me. Know how speech says something like "Extras

of double tap to open, which is essentially the voice over hint.
However,
there is a bug, where if you do that, the email previews won't be read.

No it has always been like that or you can set your rotor to action and just
flip up to open or default action and it will open up with a double tap but
still have the double tap. It been this way for ever. Now if you have 3d
touch I sure you canusethat I don't exactly know how it works or with what
it works with as I don't have 3d touch on my iPhone SE. but I think I would

Well no but if you view your mail by thread then there is not
much problem.
You just open the thread and go to the bottom of it and start
from the
bottom up. For example there is thread talking about windows
update and
there is 10 messages in that thread. Just double tap on the
thread called
windows update then this will open that thread it will be from
newest to
oldest and you just flip left to right to get to the bottom or
you can do a
three finger flip up from the bottom of the screen and it will
take you to
the bottom of the thread or you can do touch by explore. Once
you are at
the bottom then you can start reading from the bottom up and you

thread. For example I open the thread called windows update and
then I just
flick left to right and as I land on the message stop and pause
and it will
read the first 5 lines of it and I can tell if I want to open it
up to read
more or just flick up and choose delete or whatever action I
want. I have
the same thing set up on my PC preview messages without opening
them. I
don't know but maybe in IOS 10 they might have some more choices.

It is there as I just went to it in my account and I use basic HTML . just log on to your account and at the top will be a link called settings and click on that and you will see it.

I was able to locate it in standard view but found that JFW wouldn’t execute it in IE11 but could in Firefox go know. It’s also interesting to note that executing it in standard view seems to yield more options than when in basic html view.

At least that was my experience. If I’m wrong about this last point I’m sure someone will teach us all something new (smile).

I got confused about that to until one of my kids clicked it and I heard my screen reader say settings.

Hmm, don't know wonder if it was ever reported? Have you reported it ? What
iPhone do you have? Just wonder if it is only with certain models and so on?
I have not notice the problem as I keep hints turn on by default as you have
to have it turn on for certain apps in order to use it with VO. Since I can
never remember which one I just leave it on by default and mostly ignore it
till I need to know something it is telling me.
I thought you used braille? Does preview not work with braille?

much problem.
You just open the thread and go to the bottom of it and start
from the
bottom up. For example there is thread talking about windows
update and
there is 10 messages in that thread. Just double tap on the
thread called
windows update then this will open that thread it will be from

You can get to forward and email settings from basic HTML unless they have changed it . I have had no reason to go into it for years. That setting.

Now I just went up there and I have my set to Basic HTML and was able to get to it using Basic HTML by just going to settings and then forward and so on….

Well, Matt, I am NOT in the pocketbooks of the NFB; but I did grab the KNFB
Reader yesterday for $19.99! It is even available at that price in Britain
for 19 Pounds and 99 Pence. So my Shiny "crapware" Android shines through
again, Hurrah!!

Re: changing the display order of mails in the mail app iPhone

Matt

Ok, understand now. You was talking about hints and yes I have them turn on
so I can read preview in mail. I don't know if it is a bug or you have to
have hints turn on to use preview. I am so use to having hints turn on I
don't uselly even think about it. How long has it been like this?

Hi,
You're misunderstanding me. Know how speech says something like "Extras
folder, 6 apps. Double tap to open." You can turn off the a?no announcement
of double tap to open, which is essentially the voice over hint. However,
there is a bug, where if you do that, the email previews won't be read.

No it has always been like that or you can set your rotor to action and just
flip up to open or default action and it will open up with a double tap but
still have the double tap. It been this way for ever. Now if you have 3d
touch I sure you canusethat I don't exactly know how it works or with what
it works with as I don't have 3d touch on my iPhone SE. but I think I would
not use it myself.

Hi,
And isn't the double tap to open annoying? Although, it also depends on your
speech rate. It is certainly annoying at 100%.

Well it depends on the person and how they like their device setup! I
consider myself a very advance or power user of the iphone.
Since I had one
since the 3gs came out in 2009.

Hi,
Remember, though, if you want the preview, you need to have
voiceover hints,
else it won't read them. And those of us that are more of a
power user, the
double tap to open can become more than tedious. Thought I'd
just point it
out.

Once
you are at
the bottom then you can start reading from the bottom up and you
will be in
oldest to newest.
Now I myself read from newest to oldest and I have preview turn
on for mail
where it reads the first 5 lines without even open the message in
the
On how you
view your thread.

Hi,
Its frustrating, too. Since 2012, when I began using emails, I
was reading
from oldest to newest. When I found out that this couldn't be
changed, you
can imagine my reaction.

Well,

I must say, that's really odd!

Hi,
You can't change the order. Your best bet is, to go to the
bottom of the
screen (explore by touch near the home button) flick to the left
till you
come to the first email. Then, when you delete that email, it
should open
the next oldest one, although the next and previous buttons
respectively,
should do what you wanted them, too.

I generally always have used a third party ripper since the windows milennium days, and have no issues, and cDex will work the best.

What leads you to believe that there is an error message? Also, if you continue to have problems with Media Player, you can try CDex.

Each time I insert a cd into the drive, I get an error message that Windows 10 makes; at least I assume that there is some kind of error message.

How do you configure everything in order to rip? I have gone through the steps in Media Player to enable ripping. but it's not working.

Thanks for any help.
