We don't know how the system was set up where the problems with Windows Live Mail occurred.  The manufacturer may have set things in such a way as to cause screen-reader's problems.  As I recall, it was this same system that wouldn't read the setup screen properly with Narrator.  these problems may be caused by the manufacturer.  But we may never know.

I think I mis-read your previous message about NVDA. I did indeed do a new install after first upgrading to Win 10. I have been using Win 10 for around 8 months now and have very few problems with the OS. And I did not have to spend an unusual amount of time tweaking WLM to work with it. Occasionally when there is an update to the OS or to Jaws, little things crop up but I presume that happens with many programs. So far, there has been nothing which did not either resolve itself or take some minor adjustments have surfaced for me.
Perhaps I am lucky or it is because I have used WLM since the very first version.Over all, it has been one of the easiest email clients I have used. But I realize that not all systems do things the same way but I am running the same OS, screen reader and WLM on my Lenovo desktop, an Asus laptop and and older Toshiba laptop and get pretty much the same performance.

I don't have an opinion about whether repairing or reinstalling is better in a lot of cases.  But for those who upgrade to Windows 7, reinstalling NVDA is advised by knowledgeable users.  In the case of JAWS, I don't know so if it were me, I would reinstall it unless I've already seen that the currently installed copy is working properly.

It doesn't matter how many times you uninstall JAWS.  It has no effect on authorization keys.  the key is not removed.  Removing the key involves taking specific actions that have nothing to do with uninstalling or repairing.

Hi Gene,

In my case, I was setting up a new Win10 laptop with Jaws and WLM.  But, since you mention reinstalling screen readers, is it better to repair Jaws or just reinstall?  Do you use up an authorization key either way?

I will let Jeremy decide for himself as to how practical it might be to discuss the methods he used in my case. but at my computer knowledge level, making WLM accessible with Jaws was kind of involved.

Thanks,

That may be.  Perhaps if Jeremy's solution might be applicable for others, he might send it, if it isn't so involved that that might not be practical.  And, as I said, reinstalling your screen-reader if you have upgraded While the screen-reader was still installed may solve this and/or other problems.  Problems using Outlook were solved by NVDA users in this way.

I haven't seen your problem discussed in relation to running Windows Live Mail in Windows 10.  I have no idea if there is some way to correct the problem but I don't think it will be by changing settings governing what fields are shown.  There is some problem I've seen discussed where, when people start composing or replying to a message, they have to leave the message window and return to it before they can see the text that is there or that they write.  I gather you can do this in any way that takes you out of and returns you to the Window.  But I would think the easiest would simply be to press alt once to leave the window and move into the menus, and then press alt again to return to the Window.  That is the only problem I've seen discussed until you raised yours and I don't know if this is a general problem or a problem you are having and a few others.  Windows Live Mail isn't supported in Windows 10 so even though you can use it, Microsoft made no effort to see that it worked properly in Windows 10.  I hope others will discuss whether they have this problem as well as provide information such as what screen-reader they are using.

Now, with WLM16 running on Win10, its definitely messed up.  I hope I can fix this without needing to figure out how to revert back to WLM15, if it even works with Windows10.

Are you suggesting that there may be other known bugs with WLM16  with Windows10?

All that should be shown by default.  I'm not saying that you can't have more things shown but if you arrow through the message list and let your screen-reader read everything when you arrow to a message in the list, you should hear the name, subject and date.  At least that's the case in lower versions of Windows.
If you are saying that you used to hear such information in an earlier version of Windows, then I would be worried that this is another way in which Windows Live Mail is not compatible with Windows 10.  I can check later today if no one else has provided the information of where to find the settings.

Did you reinstall NVDA after the Windows 10 upgrade?  I don't know if the information on the NVDa site tells users to do so but it is advised, by knowledgeable users, that this be done.  Problems have been solved in that way regarding how certain programs work with NVDA.  If you haven't done so, reinstalling may solve this problem.  I wouldn't be surprised if reinstalling JAWS would help with some problems as well, although I have seen almost no discussion of this.  But one list member just reported today that reinstalling JAWS solved a problem he was having.

I can’t address all screen readers.  In my case, I am using Jaws17 on a brand new laptop running Windows10.  It appears that WLM needs some tweeking before it will work with Windows10 and Jaws.

The Name, date, and subject, have always been present running WLM Version 15 with Win7.

Now, with WLM16 running on Win10, its definitely messed up.  I hope I can fix this without needing to figure out how to revert back to WLM15, if it even works with Windows10.

Are you suggesting that there may be other known bugs with WLM16  with Windows10?

That may be.  Perhaps if Jeremy's solution might be applicable for others, he might send it, if it isn't so involved that that might not be practical.  And, as I said, reinstalling your screen-reader if you have upgraded While the screen-reader was still installed may solve this and/or other problems.  Problems using Outlook were solved by NVDA users in this way.

Hi,

We are using the exact same version of WLM.  I downloaded mine from Microsoft yesterday.  It was in a package of programs called Windows Esentials.

Marie, are you using WLM with Windows10?  If so, did you have to do any tweeking to get Jaws to read the fields that show name, subject, date, etc?

Hi Monica. No, the Appandora programme only goes on the computer, it is
simply a transfer tool. It highjacks the iTune drivers to put the music in
your iPhone default music folder but when you are running appandora, be sure

All that should be shown by default.  I'm not saying that you can't have more things shown but if you arrow through the message list and let your screen-reader read everything when you arrow to a message in the list, you should hear the name, subject and date.  At least that's the case in lower versions of Windows.
If you are saying that you used to hear such information in an earlier version of Windows, then I would be worried that this is another way in which Windows Live Mail is not compatible with Windows 10.  I can check later today if no one else has provided the information of where to find the settings.

But, where abouts? Do you add the additional languages, then go from there? Or where am I meant to look?

Its nonsens. Its not about rigeon, its that if you want a voice and
its not there, you can download it from your region and language
settings. That is how I got david on my pc.

Hello,
So, I've noticed, that my laptop only has Hazel, and the US female.
I'm
curious, why do I not have David, and the others? Or, to put it
another
way,
why is it not consistent, who and what you have? Windows 10 pro here.

Re: Help with new install of WLM

James Bentley

Hi everyone,

By the way, I wish to take this opportunity to once again thank Jeremy for a very long Jaws tandem session. He repaired my installation of WLM. Then, he configured various accessibility settings to WLM so I can use the computer. Now Jaws17, Windows10, WLM and me are getting along just fine. What a relief. Its great to see WLM work exactly the way that I have become accustomed to seeing. Being able to use WLM is something that I have taken for granted over the years.

Jeremy also installed additional files and gave me some additional training and advice relating to accessibility.

I wish to express my gratitude to him and all on this list who have participated in assisting me for such a long time.

It's way past my bed time. So, good night everyone.

James

No James, my solution was not at all related to Gene's suggestion. I did not
modify columns at all as gene suggested to you.

I configured various accessibility settings to WLM in general.

Hi Gene,

Jeremy did a third Jaws Tandem and fixed WLM. I wish I understood his steps
but they are above my head. He made WLM accessible by going to the same
location that you referred me to earlier. Apparently, WLM does not install
ready for Jaws. At least on some machines. For what its worth, the column
is not marked not available any more. And, most of all, I have WLM reading
every correctly. Everything is just like it has always been.

Thanks for your responses.

I wonder why. Did you have the program installed before the upgrade? If
so, reinstalling it might solve the problem. If not, I'm not sure what you
might try.

OK, the columns button is collapsed. Installing J16 produces the same
results. The only way that I can see the columns is to open each email and
check. I’ll give VFO and MS accessibility desk a call Monday.

I don’t remember why I wasn’t interested in Thunderbird but, it might be
time to reconsider after making a few calls Monday.

Gene, I appreciate you looking up this information.

To get to the settings, in the program main window, execute the following
command:
alt v, v, w.

You are now in a structure you can tab through. there are two choices. One
is for working with columns. I don't recall the exact wording but it's the
only applicable item. Press enter and look around. I didn't look at it but
I expect a dialog to open.

Hi Gene and list,

I also have the problem with not seeing text when I compose or reply to an
email. And, after looking around a bit, I have noticed that usually only
the name shows up when I arrow through the email list. However,
occasionally, only the subject line shows up. Also, Infrequently, the name
and subject line both show up. The date never shows up. Reading the
current line does not tell me the number of emails in the list or, the
number of the email that I am on.
As Carlos is fond of saying...sigh!

I will install the latest version of J16 after I take a tranquilizer, just
in case that changes any thing.

Gene, can you tell me where to go to check settings governing what fields
are shown just in case?

By the way, I have noticed, in my opinion, most of the Win10 wave files
sound like they are on tranquilizers.
I may now understand why.

Thanks for everyone’s input,

James

I haven't seen your problem discussed in relation to running Windows Live
Mail in Windows 10. I have no idea if there is some way to correct the
problem but I don't think it will be by changing settings governing what
fields are shown. There is some problem I've seen discussed where, when
people start composing or replying to a message, they have to leave the
message window and return to it before they can see the text that is there
or that they write. I gather you can do this in any way that takes you out
of and returns you to the Window. But I would think the easiest would
simply be to press alt once to leave the window and move into the menus, and
then press alt again to return to the Window. That is the only problem I've
seen discussed until you raised yours and I don't know if this is a general
problem or a problem you are having and a few others. Windows Live Mail
isn't supported in Windows 10 so even though you can use it, Microsoft made
no effort to see that it worked properly in Windows 10. I hope others will
discuss whether they have this problem as well as provide information such
as what screen-reader they are using.

Hi Gene,

The Name, date, and subject, have always been present running WLM Version 15
with Win7.

Now, with WLM16 running on Win10, its definitely messed up. I hope I can
fix this without needing to figure out how to revert back to WLM15, if it
even works with Windows10.

Are you suggesting that there may be other known bugs with WLM16 with
Windows10?

Thanks,

James
