Re: What are the steps to use BARD?

Sounds good. Probably, I'll call tomorrow, although, the
tablet is to arrive today, so I might give it a little more
time.

I am wondering though what are the steps to play, forward,
rewind, adjust speed and delete when finished with a book.

I assume that the same steps would be taken with purchased
books from the Net, although some might be text rather than
talking books. I think I am an eager beaver.

Bye for now,

Carolyn

Indeed.  I have received a few other similar reports, but on my system the virtual audio capture device just causes FFmpeg to freeze up.  How annoying.

Hello everyone,

It seems that the Virtual Recorder utility is no longer working in Windows 10.  Probably due to incompatibilities, the audio virtual capture device is causing FFmpeg to completely freeze up.  That's what I get for not testing more often.  I have no idea how long the problem has existed so it could go back to the Anniversary edition.  Unfortunately, there's not much I can do about this until or unless the developer updates the DLL.  Recording via the sound card/hardware audio devices still seems to work as expected, but the ability to record anything playing through the sound card is broken.  You can still use your sound card's
"Stereo Mix"/"What You Hear"
option if it has that capability to achieve similar results, but the primary reason for creating Virtual Recorder was for cards especially on laptops that do not have that feature.  My apologies.  I will of course post a fix if the DLL is ever updated, but considering that the last release was made three years ago, I won't be holding my breath.

Re: Virtual Recorder utility not working correctly in Windows 10

Carlos

This is yet another reason why I still use Windows 7 as my primary operating system.  Other advanced users may crow about all the improved hardware support and supposedly great new features, but at the end of the day most users just want everything to work as expected.  At least once a week we're seeing one or two posts about how some device or older program has stopped working.  As much as I enjoy new technology, I am displeased when something I have grown accustomed to using simply stops working.  I'm sure we'll all be forced to permanently upgrade eventually, but Windows 10 is certainly not doing a good job at convincing me that I shouldn't put that day off for as long as possible.

It isn't technologies fault.  it's errors or bad design in creating what uses technology.  The combination of forced updates and errors is a bad one.  But at least Windows lets you put off major updates of this kind for a time, if I recall what I've read correctly.  You can revert for a time, if my memory is correct if it is important for you to do so but at some point, you won't have a choice.

I also found out over the weekend that the creators update has screwed up web drive which is what I use to interface to my web site for uploading files. So I either have to upgrade my copy or use an older version that still works on windows 7 that I still have.

I have not decided yet what I’m going to do on that last issue. Isn’t technology grand?

It's actually THC! I don't know how these sisters will be able to buy
medical marijuana here in this Centennial state. Obviously, they'll need a
doctor's prescription of some kind and I don't know if out-of-state doctor's
notes will be honored.

It will be about a 14-hour drive from Dallas to Denver. Since Texas does
not allow medical marijuana, I sure hope it doesn't spell trouble especially
on the way back if they are stopped by the cops!

I would have thought that California is a bit closer via I-10? I think that
California also has legalised marijuana for medicinal purposes? Anyway, I
could be wrong on both ends. Never driven to California, flown to Long
Beach for a cruise, San Diego to cheer a young peoples' soccer team playing

Re: Phone advise please

Olusegun -- Victory Associates LTD, Inc.

Howard, you say that you are mobile phone ignorant; does this mean that you
don't have a cell phone of any kind including any incarnations of the famous
old Nokia toys of blessed memory? If yes, where and how to get started can
be an interesting proposition.

Second, do you have any familiarity with the Android operating system? If
not, I don't recommend a Galaxy S8! It is a high-end phone and reasonably
pricey for someone starting out in Android land. There are cheaper Android
phones out there that may jolly well fit the bill until you have gotten your
feet wet enough to venture farther afield.

The S8 is relatively new; not very many blind folks are using it quite yet,
but it's in the hands of a few. It is COMPLETELY TOUCHSCREEN! It comes
preloaded with VoiceAssistant, Samsung's screen reader on the Android
platform. Yes, Android allows the use of more than one screen reader and
more than one TTS engine.

If you're looking for tutorial on the S8 from a blindness perspective, it
will be a while before one begins making the rounds. It is a new toy, and
it hasn't gained sufficient popularity presently.

Obviously, I didn't answer any or most of your questions. I don't want to
dig into much of anything without having a clear understanding as to whether
or not you've never had a cell phone. It may be helpful to know why you're
desiring to tinker with a mobile phone now so that better suggestions and
advice can be given.

Well, if you have a best buy or frys, I would go and they can let you test the phones! All the major celluar companies have these phones too! I do not know what the quick command is for turning on talks and most sighted people do not even know that it exists on the. So, find a place that sells the phones and you can test the different phones. That is how I was able to make my decision to purchease an iPhone.

I liked the interface with voice over and the talks, seemed not as responsive and it did not do as well with the apps. It totally sucked for the internet. But, that is just my experience! And others may have differing opinions.  So it is best if you experience the phones personally.

If you get to see an iPhone, just hold down the bottom round button which is the home button and say, “turn on voice over.”  Than the whole phone will talk for you! The siri assistant will allow you to do other things too! Cheers Heather

if you use firefox and plugin container causes you to have a lot of crashes, this may help. open firefox type, about:config in the search box type dom.ipc.plugins tab over and you will be in a list of results, I had 14, but I am using e s r 45. anyway, go down the list, and where applicable, change any value from true to false, by pressing enter on it. hope this helps
