Re: What are the steps to use BARD?

Carolyn Arnold

Good to know. I am hoping to get it on my tablet, which we
made headway with, but it may be a little while before I am
proficient to the point of using it for BARD. That is an
incentive to make tracks on the thing.

Bye for now,

Carolyn

It would be much easier to help you with the Bard Mobile app
once you have it installed on the tablet and can take some
time getting familiar with it on your own. It is very simple
to use and works great on the IPhone or the Android devices.

Sounds good. Probably, I'll call tomorrow, although, the
tablet is to arrive today, so I might give it a little more
time.

I am wondering though what are the steps to play, forward,
rewind, adjust speed and delete when finished with a book.

I assume that the same steps would be taken with purchased
books from the Net, although some might be text rather than
talking books. I think I am an eager beaver.

I thought I'd try Sophos Home but when I was creating an account, I got to a part of the site that says recaptcha requires verification.  There is no edit field, no I'm not a robot check box, nothing to work with.  Is this a new problem or what have others found when working with the site?

We'll have to see what Howard says but based on his last message this morning, it sounds to me as though he'd like to still use a feature phone but may be under the misimpression that he has to switch to a smart phone if he switches providers.  that is definitely not the case.

Hi Howard:

Thanks for the additional clarifications.  Phones with regular keypads are
disappearing fast and furious!  Blackberry, in a bid to reincarnate itself,
has two for the asking running Android.  The most common one amongst the
blind is the Blackberry Priv.  The KeyOne is the newest release with a
keypad.  On the Priv, the keyboard slides out.  I have not had a chance to
fiddle with one, but I understand that the KeyOne is more or less like a
candy bar phone.

I've also heard about the LG Wine, but I'm not sure if it comes with a
regular phone keypad.  U.S. Cellular does support this phone, I'd suggest
you ask them a trillion questions!

For you to get the S8 at a good price, you will probably be locked into at
least a two-year contract!  I'll make sure I read the fine prints carefully
if that's what you finally elect to do.  If not on a contract, it is a
pricey water buffalo at around $750-$800Plus depending on where you grab one
from.

If there's a phone store near your locale, please plan on going in and
playing with a touchscreen toy before deciding to grab one.

You don't have to be an expert to use a touchscreen phone; however, there's
a learning curve and more than an ounce of patience is required.  I use one,
and I have challenges as well:  For instance, I need to TAKE A SCREENSHOT of
an app and send it to the its developer based in Poland!  Well, I can take
the screenshot, no problems.  But, for reasons I can't shake a stick at, I
have not been able to figure out how to ATTACH THAT SCREENSHOT to an E-mail
address.  I can extend the life of my device by rooting it; but I haven't
done it primarily because I have only one presently.  I also haven't done a
good job taking a selfy and scanning with the KNFB Reader.  Be that as it
may, Android is the ONLY TOY that rocks my boat!  I intend to keep
challenging my weaknesses to a fight, and I think I'll get the hang of them
before long!

Hi everyone,

I want to delete around 40,000, emails in Gmail at once. All of these
messeges are in my All Emails Folder. I can Google and find all kinds
of different methods. But, none of them can be accomplished by a blind
user. That is, as best as I can tell.

So, by any chance, does any one know how a blind user can delete all
emails in Gmail at one time?

Many thanks,

Re: What are the steps to use BARD?

Olusegun -- Victory Associates LTD, Inc.

Sis Carolyn, it's not as hard as you're thinking! All the buttons for
Forward, Rewind, Speed, and lots more are properly labeled. The BARD app on
Android is a well-written one from my limited observation. Of course, I'll
be playing with it a lot more over the next few days.

I will confess to a deficiency of mine: Audio books put me to sleep! As
such, when I get the Polaris--yes, I'm getting one and sending it through my
torture chamber to see if it will leave up to expectations--I'll begin
reading Braille BARD books and any other I may purchase.

The NLS DOESN'T ALWAYS have the sort of books I want to read. I do find
some of its offerings boring at times!

Sincerely,
Olusegun
Denver, Colorado

Re: What are the steps to use BARD?

Olusegun -- Victory Associates LTD, Inc.

Ok, I finally straightened out the BARD password thingie, logged into BARD
on my Shiny Android toy; Just for a test run, I elected to download an audio
magazine. I grabbed National Geographic. The audio magazine folder was
automatically created. I had my phone set to also use data transfers when
downloading; in this way, if I happen to walk away from an active WI-FI
environment, a download for a very large file will continue uninterrupted.
The download took only a few minutes!

I didn't need to UNZIP the downloaded material before reading. I located
the Bookshelf on the top left, activated it, found the only magazine I
downloaded, did a double tap on it, and it began to read. At the bottom of
the screen were all sorts of accessible buttons: Decrease volume, increase
volume, Stop, Speed and several others that I can't recall presently. I
need to play with the app some more.

When I logged in, the app sought to know where I would like to have
downloaded materials stored; in the internal memory of my phone, or on my SD
card. I chose the latter since I have a 128GB one in my phone. The good
thing about this is that I can take the SD card out, move the folder to a
USB flash drive on the computer, plug the USB flash drive into the NLS
Player and read away. Alternately, if I don't want to take out the SD card,
I can connect the USB flash drive to my Android phone and use a File
Transfer app to move the folder from the SD card to the USB flash drive.

Being able to read material directly on my Android phone with zero hassles
is refreshing; eventually, I won't even need the NLS player anymore, or any
specially adapted toy like the Victor Stream, PlexTalk Pocket and others in
order to read NLS books as recorded audio. Of course, I already read ePub,
.mobi, and .PDF books on my Shiny Android toy! A book reader in my pocket
that does a heck of a lot more? Let progress keep moving forward!

So, if anyone has an Android toy, and wishes to use the BARD app, please
consider having your downloaded materials placed on an SD card if your
device has a slot for one. Personally, I won't buy any Android toy that
DOES NOT support SD cards. By doing this, you keep the internal storage
space for those apps that must necessarily be installed there.

Sincerely,
Olusegun
Denver, Colorado

Are you running the file that says BlindsoftwareUnlockCodeGenerator.exe?  There is a zip file with another name and I haven't looked at that to see what it does.  Running the file I gave the name for works properly here.  I just want to be sure so I'm asking something that might seem obvious so as not to overlook it.

Mike, thanks.  I'll keep that in mind.  I'm getting unhandled exceptions when trying to register a program or the code is invalid.

Mike, with this package, do you dump everything into 1 directory?

Re: Virtual Recorder utility not working correctly in Windows 10

Hi,
Ah there ya see you never know what detail might spark a chase down a rabbit trail and what it might yield whether we want it to or not is another matter (laughs).
I’m happy to try and help whenever and however I can. If you’d like us to test any other variables just send out word.

I'm still not sure why only some are experiencing problems, but based on the comment made by Robin, I tested with a couple of different audio devices and it actually worked.  It was initially not working with my Sound Blaster Audigy, but after testing I switched the default system playback device back to the Audigy and it is now working again.  My only guess at this point is that it must be some kind of intermittent issue with certain devices.  In either case, I did upload new packages because I discovered another issue in the process.  The portable version and the utility included in the installer are supposed to request elevated privileges to register the virtual capture device.  This was not working correctly in Windows 10 so it may have also possibly contributed to the problems some are experiencing.  At least with the portable version.  With the installed version registration of the component occurs during setup, but there is a utility included which allows you to reregister the DLL just in case.  The latest updates can be found on the page below as usual thanks to Rob Hudson.

Hi Robin,

At this point, I have no clue what is causing the problem for some users and not others, but I of course appreciate all feedback.  I'm not sure if the sound card being used would make a difference or not, but virtual capture does use the audio device configured as the system default so I suppose anything is possible.

Hi,
I mentioned the soundcard in the interest of being as factual and detailed as possible as obviously something was coming into play and you never know which bit of minutia might reveal something.  further virtual capture is the exact recording input source I was using. And as of this writing it is for whatever reason still working here under Windows 10 1703 (OS Build 15063.250)
For whatever it is or isn’t worth I hope Carlos finds it useful.

It's not the sound card that's the problem.  The player evidently no longer works when you use the option that doesn't record using a sound card.  I don't recall the name of the option but it's purpose is to allow recording of things such as Internet streams or other material you would have used a Stereo Mix sound card feature for in the past.  Now, you could use this feature if your sound card didn't support such an option or even if it did.

Hi,
It just worked for me 3 days ago under Windows 10 creator’s update. I’m using a SoundBlaster Omni USB soundcard.

Subject: Virtual Recorder utility not working correctly in Windows 10

Hello everyone,

It seems that the Virtual Recorder utility is no longer working in Windows 10.  Probably due to incompatibilities, the audio virtual capture device is causing FFmpeg to completely freeze up.  That's what I get for not testing more often.  I have no idea how long the problem has existed so it could go back to the Anniversary edition.  Unfortunately, there's not much I can do about this until or unless the developer updates the DLL.  Recording via the sound card/hardware audio devices still seems to work as expected, but the ability to record anything playing through the sound card is broken.  You can still use your sound card's
"Stereo Mix"/"What You Hear"
option if it has that capability to achieve similar results, but the primary reason for creating Virtual Recorder was for cards especially on laptops that do not have that feature.  My apologies.  I will of course post a fix if the DLL is ever updated, but considering that the last release was made three years ago, I won't be holding my breath.
