Hi all,

You can use Kurzie or OB to do this, dunnow if you'll get the DAISY mark-up though. It would be straight .mp3 files.

Re: Is there such an animal as a program to convert DAISY to MP3?

Monte Single

Hi Walt,

As I know it  a book  or other document  in daisy format is actually a folder made of a few different types of files. One of these type of files is .mp3. So if I have a book in daisy for mat and I want to play it on a device which will  only read .mp3 files, I open the folder, select all the .mp3 files, and put them in a folder on the device where I want to play them. So,  I am    not converting any files, I am just putting the book  in a simpler format;, that is .mp3 files only.

I think that is how it works,  and I’ve  very wrong before.

Later,

Monte

We need information such as whether the person is moving up and down in the list of messages or whether he is opening a message, then using a command to move to the next message, automatically opening it.

This problem may be difficult to solve without someone who can work with the computer either in person or by remoting into it. FS technical support or the Microsoft Accessibility service might be able to help. We don't know if the problem is with JAWS or if the problem is with Outlook. We might be able to figure that out by getting the kind of information I asked about above.

Another alternative might be to have a sighted friend look at how e-mails are displayed to see if anything is unusual. What was the last person doing with the computer? Was he trying to correct a problem or problems or was he doing some sort of work for the person such as using the computer to help the person with computer activities? Maybe the person did something using a mouse to change the way the window is displayed. I'm not sure if that might cause the problem but I would think it might be.

He tells me he has a Screen Reader called Jaws which works OK but fails to

Re: weird problem, computer lost between past and present

Perhaps some kind of problem with file caching in the solid state memory of the drive?  Only a guess because I can't immediately think of what else might cause the kind of behavior you are describing, but it seems unlikely.

Subject: [TechTalk] weird problem, computer lost between past and present

Good morning all,

I am getting a very weird situation with my computer, it is new, it is a Lenovo desktop. It has a hybrid disk of 1tb. I am noticing that sometimes the hybrid disk doesn't report some changes. For example yesterday I  had to replace the outlook.pst file for an old copy that I have, but later I found that after replace it, the old file reappear where I place the new copy. Today I download the scripts that Carlos sent to TechTalk, and I downloaded them to the download folder. I open the zip file, and I was reading the readme.txt file, then I heard jaws saying. Do you want to download this file?

what, I just downloaded them, why it is asking me to redownload the file?

Ok, before click in ok, and with the readme.txt file open, I when to the download folder, and I couldn't find the zip file that I downloaded a few seconds before, and where I was reading the readme.txt file.

Why my computer is getting lost between the past and the present?

I had the txt file open, and this file was inside a zip file in my computer, and now I.e. is asking me to download the same file?

Well, I declined to download the file, and I restart my computer. Firstable my computer been new, is restarting very slowly, worse than older computers that I have. Now I went to the download folder, and the zip file is there. My outlook is ok now, with the emails that I should lost b in the right place, like nothing happened.

What is going on in this computer, is something special that I need to know about hybrid disks?

Why my computer sometimes is like going back to the past, and later coming back to the present?

Any advice?

Re: problems reading emails

Pat Seed

Hi Pablo,
I had that problem earlier this year. Before you do anything, you should back up what you have. I grabbed a couple of my recent folders, after making the backup, and put them on another computer in the proper location. I found, then, that I could open the emails and read them. I use XP on both computers, and was having other problems with Outlook Express. If you have someone who can see come over and look at the screen, it would be interesting to know if they see the inside of the message, and not just the headers. If you do not have anyone who is sighted, you might try printing out one of the messages, and then read it on an OCR program, or bring it with you when you are going somewhere and have the person read the page to you. I hope what I have said will help in diagnosing the problem, and then we can figure out what to do.
Blessings and All the Very Best,
Pat

Re: New member and I mneed serious help!

Carlos

Hello and welcome to the list Jackie.  I will provide information about the package for Outlook Express which runs on versions of Windows later than XP below, but you should be aware that although it usually works fine, it can sometimes be flakey so it may or may not be worth the effort.  There are other options which are more stable like Windows Live Mail that are at least similar to Outlook Express so might not involve a huge learning curve.

In either case, the latest version of Outlook Express for Windows 7 requires a donation of $10 to receive installation keys.  You can donate and download the installer here,
http://www.runasxp.com/forum-2.html
but you will have to register on the forum to donate and access the download link.  There is a captcha which you can resolve with WebVisum/Firefox.  Or you can download the last completely free version from my Dropbox.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/o8dzd63tcftsk0y/oe6_1.6.7.exe?dl=1
The installation is pretty straight forward, but you should make sure to select the installation file, press the Applications key, and choose
"Run as administrator"
from the context menu.  Make sure that the
"Patch Protected Storage Service"
checkbox is checked which you will see during the installation process.  You should also reboot after the installation is complete.  Note that in Windows 10 I received an error about some DLLs not being properly registered or installed, but despite this fact it still worked fine for me at least.  If you are running Jaws, you may also want to install my modified Outlook Express scripts.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/jhit8i1uiud69q5/OutlookExpressJAWSScripts.zip?dl=1
They will prevent Jaws from using the scripts for Windows Mail as it would do by default which in turn provides better functionality.  Instructions for installing the scripts are included in the ReadMe file.

After XP had to get used to it, but I cope sufficiently……… Except with Outlook I have to learn now and with going onto the  Internet is just as bad

Then someone on another list told me about you and said that he knows of people who is still using OE with Windows 10 and also Internet Explorer. “They” have told me that I cannot use OE any more and just so IE. I battle my ass of (Pardon for that) I am an older lady and it is very difficult for me to try and learn to use Outlook and Google Chrome.

Is there any way that I can still get and use Outlook Express and Internet Explorer 10 or 11? I would be eternally grateful if someone can please help me.

If I can only get my address book or contacts! I can get to my contacts, but it only says the first entry and nothing further.

Re: weird problem, computer lost between past and present

Carlos

A hybrid is a conventional mechanical hard drive with a small amount of solid state memory for support. The drive firmware tracks which applications/files you use most frequently and then caches them on the solid state portion of the drive for faster access. Overall a hybrid provides better performance than a standard conventional drive, but not better than a purely solid state drive. They have not caught on as much as they possibly could have because pure solid state drive prices have been dropping very quickly over the last couple of years.

hi.
i dont understand your talking about hybrid disk.
i presume its an ssd disk.
first of all just take a look at your list of installed programs.
some programs are there which will make your pc freez in a particular state.
this programs are installed by system admins to prevent nasty changes
to the pcs of staffs.
so if u dont recognise something just uninstall it.
u also must take a look at portable hd tune who knows your hybrid disk
is failing.
i have seen such things on drives with serious drive errors which can
be fixed using chkdsk.
also do a virus scan and check out.

Subject: Screen Reader Software

Hi Adrien,
It's Paul here.
I have been contacted by a gentleman who is also blind and sounds like
someone has done the dirty on him.
I need your advice.
He tells me he has a Screen Reader called Jaws which works OK but fails to
read e.mails... both whom they are from and the content.
I have told him that I know you and that you also use a Screen Reader and
that your software does what his does not.
He believes it is a setting somewhere within the software that has not been
enabled and that the person who visited him last did not know the software
and basically has left him in the dark (so to speak).
Do you know if your software has such a setting or whether all Screen
Readers are automatically enabled so they can read e.mails?
I have been up front with him and told him I do not know the programme but
will try to get information for him.
Can you help?
Regards,
Paul.

Hello Adrien,
I believe we will need more information like what version of Windows and
possibly JAWS as well. What Email client is being used if any, and so on.

takes longer than writing the original document in the first place.
Jarte's html exporter is messy too. Any other suggestions?
