I just signed up for a credit freeze for all 3 bureaus I was not charged anything.

Are you talking about a freeze or a fraud alert?  A freeze must be done with every credit bureau indifidually and there is a charge that every credit bureau charges.  I think it's about twenty dollars per bureau.  A fraud alert, as I recall is free and, based on a message from a list member, if you notify one credit bureau, you can do so by phone, that you want a fraud alert, that bureau will notify the others.

Hi Everyone,

Wow, what a mess!  This is just plain stupidity on the part of Equifax!  According to Rick Smith Chairman and CEO of Equifax, this all started in May through July, and consumers were not even notified until Sept!  Everytime I attempt to go online to Equifax, I am asked to enter my last name, last 6 digits of my SSN and my password, but I don’t have a password with Equifax and never did.  Any suggestions? I used the Equifax linck Gene had in an email, and I also Googled it, but I still get the exact same message when I go to Equifax’s site.

But Equifax had two other breaches in the last year or two and security experts are saying that they should have significantly strengthened their security after the other breaches.  In addition, they knew about the breach since something like July 29 and they waited about five weeks to disclose it.  And, of course, before the disclosure, the president of the company and, I believe, two or three other officials unloaded a lot of stock before its value went down. 

 

also, to get their free protection for a year, which is a completely inadequate length of time, you have to waive your right to sue the company and agree to submit to arbitration. 

 

Of course, there will continue to be security breaches but it appears that Equifax was grossly negligent.

LOL you guys are behaving as if they gave away the information
intentionally.  I don't have an opinion one way or the other as to whether
anyone should opt in to their monitoring service, but the fact is these
things  happen.  It is an inherent risk of living in the information age and
no company's security is ever going to be 100% foolproof.  It has happened
before and it will almost certainly happen again.

I’m talking about a credit freeze, and yes, I know they do charge for this request.  From what I’ve heard, it is $5 or $10 onetime charge according to the state the person lives in.  If I had my credit monitored, I would pay more than that maybe in a month.  I can have the freeze lifted any time.

Are you talking about a freeze or a fraud alert?  A freeze must be done with every credit bureau indifidually and there is a charge that every credit bureau charges.  I think it's about twenty dollars per bureau.  A fraud alert, as I recall is free and, based on a message from a list member, if you notify one credit bureau, you can do so by phone, that you want a fraud alert, that bureau will notify the others.

Why would a friend/tutor need to spend 6 hours setting up your laptop? Didn’t the store where you bought it from at least set it up? If you live close to the store where you bought it, can’t you just take it back to the store? Although, I don’t know where you purchased it from.  I understand you purchased a in home warranty, but didn’t the store give you a 90 day warranty as well?

Most manufacturers these days have the ability to remotely access your computer and perform this troubleshooting and determine thenselves what the problem is. It doesn’t surprise me that Dell does not have this ability. Once the premiere computer company, they have been surpassed by the entire industry. I have owned Lenovo computers for some years now, and they have this ability and the in-home support as well. I wish you luck with this issue.

I got the laptop this week and my friend/tutor spent  six hours setting it up.  I was thrilled.  I purchased a oneyear”prime”service plan which promised in home service.  I called them and after spleaking to five people before I was in the correct department,  I was informed that I needed a sighted person to do some kind of trouble shooting before someone would come out.  The field person only replaces parts.  They say that he can’t do any trouble shooting.  I feel that I’ve been screwed and told them so.  This is the sixth or seventh dell I’ve bought and the last one.

Hi Everyone,

Wow, what a mess!  This is just plain stupidity on the part of Equifax!  According to Rick Smith Chairman and CEO of Equifax, this all started in May through July, and consumers were not even notified until Sept!  Everytime I attempt to go online to Equifax, I am asked to enter my last name, last 6 digits of my SSN and my password, but I don’t have a password with Equifax and never did.  Any suggestions? I used the Equifax linck Gene had in an email, and I also Googled it, but I still get the exact same message when I go to Equifax’s site.

But Equifax had two other breaches in the last year or two and security experts are saying that they should have significantly strengthened their security after the other breaches.  In addition, they knew about the breach since something like July 29 and they waited about five weeks to disclose it.  And, of course, before the disclosure, the president of the company and, I believe, two or three other officials unloaded a lot of stock before its value went down. 

 

also, to get their free protection for a year, which is a completely inadequate length of time, you have to waive your right to sue the company and agree to submit to arbitration. 

 

Of course, there will continue to be security breaches but it appears that Equifax was grossly negligent.

LOL you guys are behaving as if they gave away the information
intentionally.  I don't have an opinion one way or the other as to whether
anyone should opt in to their monitoring service, but the fact is these
things  happen.  It is an inherent risk of living in the information age and
no company's security is ever going to be 100% foolproof.  It has happened
before and it will almost certainly happen again.

Wow, what a mess!  This is just plain stupidity on the part of Equifax!  According to Rick Smith Chairman and CEO of Equifax, this all started in May through July, and consumers were not even notified until Sept!  Everytime I attempt to go online to Equifax, I am asked to enter my last name, last 6 digits of my SSN and my password, but I don’t have a password with Equifax and never did.  Any suggestions? I used the Equifax linck Gene had in an email, and I also Googled it, but I still get the exact same message when I go to Equifax’s site.

But Equifax had two other breaches in the last year or two and security experts are saying that they should have significantly strengthened their security after the other breaches.  In addition, they knew about the breach since something like July 29 and they waited about five weeks to disclose it.  And, of course, before the disclosure, the president of the company and, I believe, two or three other officials unloaded a lot of stock before its value went down. 

 

also, to get their free protection for a year, which is a completely inadequate length of time, you have to waive your right to sue the company and agree to submit to arbitration. 

 

Of course, there will continue to be security breaches but it appears that Equifax was grossly negligent.

LOL you guys are behaving as if they gave away the information
intentionally.  I don't have an opinion one way or the other as to whether
anyone should opt in to their monitoring service, but the fact is these
things  happen.  It is an inherent risk of living in the information age and
no company's security is ever going to be 100% foolproof.  It has happened
before and it will almost certainly happen again.

There are a lot of satisfied blind Dell owners.  Before deciding what to do or not to do in terms of purchasing a computer, the only way to make an informed, and not an emotional decision, is to try to find out what other companies do in terms of sending people to service a machine.  As I said, I would never waste money buying a service agreement from any company and if you don't do that, this problem might be moot.  Dell or other companies might be very happy to send a tech out if you were paying for the specific visit and not having the visit be made under extended warranty.

It’s just my opinion, but I think your big mistake was in buying a Dell.  By the way: they can do more stuff, because they set up my whole computer and got it running and stuff.  As far as just replacing parts, maybe they are not supposed to do more, but some of them do.  A guy who came to replace a keyboard in a laptop for me also got rid of the box that demands a password, and also got rid of that MSN messenger that was on there.  Maybe he didn’t get rid of it, but he made them so they didn’t pop up.  When I needed a defective drive replaced, the guy set up my email and I think he put back some of the stuff that was in there on the old drive.  That was not the same guy.  So, it depends on how strictly they stick to the rules.  But yes, I believe you did get screwed if that computer was brand new and it was like that.  Pam.

I got the laptop this week and my friend/tutor spent  six hours setting it up.  I was thrilled.  I purchased a oneyear”prime”service plan which promised in home service.  I called them and after spleaking to five people before I was in the correct department,  I was informed that I needed a sighted person to do some kind of trouble shooting before someone would come out.  The field person only replaces parts.  They say that he can’t do any trouble shooting.  I feel that I’ve been screwed and told them so.  This is the sixth or seventh dell I’ve bought and the last one.

Most manufacturers these days have the ability to remotely access your computer and perform this troubleshooting and determine thenselves what the problem is. It doesn’t surprise me that Dell does not have this ability. Once the premiere computer company, they have been surpassed by the entire industry. I have owned Lenovo computers for some years now, and they have this ability and the in-home support as well. I wish you luck with this issue.

If you tell us what problem you are having, you might get help.  As far as purchased warranties are concerned, I consider them a waste of money for computers.  If a computer is going to develop problems, it is far more likely to do so early in its use, I think the figure is within 200 hours.  So use the computer enough during the free warranty period to see if it develops any problems.  Beyond that point, problems may develop but they are much less likely and you probably won't have problems of a hardware nature for many years, perhaps longer. 
 
But as I said, whatever problems you are having with the warranty now, if you tell us the problem or problems you are having with the computer, list members may be able to help.

It’s just my opinion, but I think your big mistake was in buying a Dell.  By the way: they can do more stuff, because they set up my whole computer and got it running and stuff.  As far as just replacing parts, maybe they are not supposed to do more, but some of them do.  A guy who came to replace a keyboard in a laptop for me also got rid of the box that demands a password, and also got rid of that MSN messenger that was on there.  Maybe he didn’t get rid of it, but he made them so they didn’t pop up.  When I needed a defective drive replaced, the guy set up my email and I think he put back some of the stuff that was in there on the old drive.  That was not the same guy.  So, it depends on how strictly they stick to the rules.  But yes, I believe you did get screwed if that computer was brand new and it was like that.  Pam.

I haven't looked at enough reviews to draw any conclusions.  I looked at one site where Life Lock was listed in the top ten protection companies.  I'm not recommending or not recommending them.  But whatever problems they may have or have had, I've never heard of them having a security breach nor have I seen reports of customers being subject to identity theft because of Life lock misconduct.  There may be, or have been reason for concern, judging by the article and we don't know what Life Lock has done in the last two years.  the fine was assessed in 2015.  The article raises questions but I'd want more information before forming an opinion about the company now.  Based on the enormous hack of Equifax and the fact that Equifax had two other hacks in something like the last year and didn't bother to take proper precautions, leads me to very seriously question whether it is correct or fair or reasonable to equate the two companies' conduct.

What is disturbing about the fine against Lifelock is the size of the fine.  The FTC wouldn’t  have levied a fine of $100 million if Lifelock had only commited a minor violation.   Lifelock is not a Fortune 500 company by any stretch, and under a judge’s ruling must pay most of this fine to settle a class action lawsuit against it.  This raises serious questions about its credibility, trustworthiness and long-term viability.  But even if Lifelock ultimately pays this fine and promises to reform its business practices, what is to stop it from reverting to its old ways in view of the current administration’s pro-business, anti-consumer policies? I certainly wouldn’t trust a company to protect me against identity fraud if it itself has been the target of serious fraud allegations by the leading government consumer watchdog agency.

I wouldn't just base my decision on one violation.  I haven't researched this to any extent, but from the little I've read, it appears that Life Lock is more thorough than other services.  Is the extra thoroughness important in protecting your credit?  I don't know.  And also, Life Lock has three plans.  The cheapest plan may not be more thorough than the other services may be.  But when you ask if they are more trustworthy than Equifax, that question implies that you think that they will somehow misuse your data.  I haven't read the article yet, but I've never heard of a breach at Life Lock and whatever they were fined for is probably minor when compared with what Equifax did.  Equifax exposed personal information on half the population of The United States. 
 
I haven't done this, but you can probably get interesting information and comparisons by doing a google search for something like best credit protection company.

If you fool around and put in any name and any information, it won't tell you are impacted if it thinks you arent'  Have you read the earlier messages in the thread?  Yesterday and perhaps again today, I said that I was told that they don't think my information is impacted.  They don't say it definitely isn't.  They say they don't think it is.  That leaves them wiggle room in case they are wrong.  With fifty percent of the public affected, f course you are going to get a lot of affected indications.  Every time you enter fictitious information, there's a fifty-fifty chance you will enter an affected number.

 

Also, I really doubt that Life Lock is the company they contracted with to provide protection.  If it is, I'd be interested in knowing.

After this I am wondering what would be the cost of life lock. It's
bad enough the three credit report scores is pretty much what controls
us getting anything, now who knows what problems we could have. I know
there is a couple things on my credit report that shouldn't be that I
am trying to figure out how to get rid of and something that I payed
off but it's still showing as an active account. It's madness I tell
you. There is no way I am trusting equal fax. To mounter my credit

Hi Everyone,

Wow, what a mess!  This is just plain stupidity on the part of Equifax!  According to Rick Smith Chairman and CEO of Equifax, this all started in May through July, and consumers were not even notified until Sept!  Everytime I attempt to go online to Equifax, I am asked to enter my last name, last 6 digits of my SSN and my password, but I don’t have a password with Equifax and never did.  Any suggestions? I used the Equifax linck Gene had in an email, and I also Googled it, but I still get the exact same message when I go to Equifax’s site.

But Equifax had two other breaches in the last year or two and security experts are saying that they should have significantly strengthened their security after the other breaches.  In addition, they knew about the breach since something like July 29 and they waited about five weeks to disclose it.  And, of course, before the disclosure, the president of the company and, I believe, two or three other officials unloaded a lot of stock before its value went down. 

 

also, to get their free protection for a year, which is a completely inadequate length of time, you have to waive your right to sue the company and agree to submit to arbitration. 

 

Of course, there will continue to be security breaches but it appears that Equifax was grossly negligent.

intentionally.  I don't have an opinion one way or the other as to whether
anyone should opt in to their monitoring service, but the fact is these
things  happen.  It is an inherent risk of living in the information age and
no company's security is ever going to be 100% foolproof.  It has happened

Yes, I had the same experience when my previous Dell desktop needed warranty repair.  Even though I suspected that the local hard drive was dying,I was told that I would have to first perform some kind of proprietary diagnostic test to confirm this, which required sighted help, before they would send a service technician to my home to fix it.  Fortunately, it was a Sunday and so my cousin, who is an information technology specialist was available and drove all the way from Long Island to perform the diagnostics for me while being guided over the phone by a Dell customer support agent.  When they were satisfied that the hard drive was indeed on its last legs,, they scheduled an appointment for a technician to visit me the following day to replace it.  All the technician did was replace it and reinstall the XP operating system.  I had to get my tech savvy friend to visit me all the way from Brooklyn to restore the image backup I had stored on an external Seagate portable drive to the new local hard drive because the procedure required sighted assistance, and the Dell technician claimed that company policy prohibited him from doing this for me.
