LOL that is rather general isn't it?  I believe he was looking for recommendations of specific models.  USB wired models for that matter, not bluetooth.

Subject: [TechTalk] Looking for a USB powered headset with boom microphone and mute feature

Hello list,

So some of my business involves making and receiving calls via Skype. I’ve for a while now been using a Logitec headset that has worked pretty well for me, but it seems to be on its last legs. More and more interference, scratchy mic, etc.

I’ve all in all been happy with it and am having a harder time than I thought finding a replacement. Of course, I don’t know what model Logetec it is. Otherwise, I would just try to get the same model. This particular one is USB powered headset with boom microphone. The volume controls are on the right ear cuff with the mute toggle button as the circular indention on the same ear cuff.

Anyway, I’ve been looking at different models and brands, but am not convinced. I need something that is USB powered, has a mute on and off feature and preferably corded with the cable on the left side of the headset (due to how my tower and esk are set up).

I’ve tried a gaming set or two, but those I’ve found to be way bulky and a bit too much on the star treck/storm trooper side for my taste with the microphones being too far away to be able to rely on a clear phone call.

I’m currently trying a Logitec 390, but am not impressed with the sound quality. Jaws sounds muffled as though there is too much trevel and I get this odd tinny metallic feedback that is ever so slight, but is noticeable every time Jaws speaks.

The one other thing I like about my old headset is that it also has a switch on the right ear cuff that can be moved to preset audio profiles. Phone call, music or gaming. With this 390 and other sets, I’m finding that in order to change the audio profile, you have to poke around in its software or the windows sound settings to do it. I prefer just to be able to flick a switch to lessen the base or trevel for a crisper sounding Jaws.

Can anyone recommend any particular models they’re using with the specifications mentioned above??

Thanks,

Re: product key of office 2013

Hi mark,

Next thing you need to  know is what edition of office 2013 you had. Was it student, home,   small business  etc..

I think you can go to the Microsoft web site and find a link on the downloads page. If you find the right edition to match your product key all should be good. Others on this list  will know more and hopefully respond now that  your situation is a little clearer.

Good Luvk,

Re: Blind Mice Mart Talking Microwave Sale

Matt

They can but they are not going to do it voluntary they are going to have to be made to do it by taking them to court just like all the other things the threat of law suit or a lawsuit makes them change their minds. But we have to get organization like the NFB AFB and so on to help on this and donate to their cause. Apple did not make their stuff accessible till the threat of the law suet came. Then once they did do it they seen that they could indeed make money at this they really jump on the ban wagon.  Not taking anything away from Apple as they could have did a half bake thing but they did not do that they did it right!

The problem is getting some manufacture to step up and run with the ball once it is did and we start buying up things from them then other will want to get on the ban wagon. But it takes that first company to make that first step!

Hi there!
Well, I think that if Google, Apple and now MicroSoft are able to put speech on their smart phones at no additional cost to the consumer I wonder why companies making appliances can't do something similar? I understand that businesses must make money and I personally wouldn't have a problem paying a bit more for a talking MicroWave.  But paying 3 to 4 times what the non-talking model sells for is being a bit overly greedy in my opinion..?

If Hamilton Beach could sell the Temo talking microwave for $79, which is what they did, then why should we be forced to purchase one for over $300 because we require the talking feature. It can’t cost that much more to add that feature.?

Re: Direct TV access for blind user

Yes this is why I cut a loose from the cable/satellite companies. I now and over the air and the use of my iPhone and computer and will be investing in the apple tv. All this is fairly accessible not always completely but fairly accessible and gives me all the content I need to ever watch . JST

At least on my parents' there is a button on the remote for video description near the long volume control. I can't say there's even that with Time Warner, unless you use analog and have it on the TV itself.

Re: Blind Mice Mart Talking Microwave Sale

Yes very true if more manufacture built in speech from the get go and then it was widely sold in all stores then the cost would be very little. The problem is this is A T product aim just at us. So the market is way down for it.

That is why we have to get all manufactures to build in accessibility from the get go in all products . Then all you have to do is get the speech turn on in settings.  Now you would have to have a way to turn it on and off as visual people mostly would not want this.

It can be done and should been done several years ago.

Blind Mice Mart is only a distributer, not the manufacturer.  It is the manufacturer you should be criticizing if anyone.

If you think Blind Mice Mart is a ripp-off, Maxi-Aids is currently selling this talking microwave for $370, plus $15 special shipping plus about $36 sales tax for New York state residents.  That’s over $400 for a compact microwave that would probably sell for under $100 without the speech feature.  But the fine folks at Blind Mice Mart are selling it for only $320, but you still have to wait 3 to 4 weeks for it to be shipped.  Isn’t that swell of them?

LOL $319 is still way too much for a microwave.  Even one that talks.  And really for over $300 you would think that adding a display so that sighted people could use it as well wouldn't be unreasonable.

Hi Beth,
We are currently working on accesibility improvements for our app. Thank
you for the detailed report you gave us. As soon as we have something
testable (probably a beta version of the product) we will get back to you.

Best regards,
Emanuele

To Whom it May Concern,
Hello, my name is Beth Taurasi. I am a broadcast DJ who has frequented
your service, however, I thought I would try your desktop app, only to
find it completely inaccessible and not keyboard user friendly. I am a
totally blind broadcaster and would like to stream on Spreaker, but I
find it deplorable that anyone would wheel out a software that is
inaccessible.
You might be thinking, oh, but this is perfectly usable and beautiful,
but beauty isn't the issue. As a blind person, you really should have
thought about what we do as blind people. We use screen access
softwares
such as Non Visual Desktop Access, or better known as NVDA, JAWS or job
access with speech, Voiceover for Mac, WindowEyes, Hal, and Supernova.
Those are among a few screen access outfits we use to access the
screens. All screen access softwares allow us to do multitouch gestures
in the case of your mobile device platforms, however, in the case of a
platform like Windows, there is a solution you have not implemented.
You
refused or forgot about keyboard interface. The whole interface is
silent and cannot be used without a mouse, which is deplorable and
wrong
to us. We are asking that you make this part usable.
Everything from the microphone output and input stuff to signing in and
that with Twitter, Facebook, or other social media, is unusable. Please
do me a favor and do the following:
1. Implement keyboard keys and interface with a keyboard while working
with this software. Please understand that Station Playlist Studio has
this capability.
2. Make all chats readable and what's more, make them come in.
3. If you think this will cost money, please feel free to ask questions
of all of your user base, especially blind people. We will be happy to
partner with your company to ensure that this application across all
platforms is made usable and accessible by all users with screen
readers.
4. If you think this costs too much, it wouldn't. It won't cost you a
dime, but not making this program usable for us will cost you business
and make losses instead of gains. For more information, please contact
the following organizations. You can Google them if you forget, but I
will provide the websites here.
The National Federation of the Blind is the world's oldest and largest
organization of blind people, the blind speaking for themselves and not
the blind being spoken for. It has fought for web access and there is
currently a web access and such webinar that they are planning. Please
visit the following URL:
www.nfb.org <http://www.nfb.org>
The American Council of the Blind is another organization, still agrees
with the NFB on their stuff, but it is a bit smaller and less powerful,
however, it is still a good start. Please visit the following URL.
www.acb.org <http://www.acb.org>
I will be happy to introduce you all to Deque Systems Incorporated.
Please google and consult with this company because they have an
outstanding CEO, Preti Kumar, who has spoken at length about app and
web
app access, and she and her cohorts have a kit that makes websites
accessible.
Bear in mind the DOJ has found that companies with accessible apps and
websites get more business and there are more ordinances and rules
being
proposed that extend ADA access to web apps and applications.
Thank you for reading this letter, and please respond with any question
or concern you may have regarding your application.
Sincerely,

Yes, they use to make one and you could turn the voice on and off and low and hi and it talked you thru 90 percent of the things and I have two of them one in use and one no longer in use but still works like a charm. I think it was maybe made by Hamilton beach. It calls itself temo might not be spelling that right and it was under 100 bucks. So if they can do this and was selling them under 100 bucks then there is no reason they could not do this with this one as well and both the non-visual and visual could use it. The Temo is larger microwave as well. Besides this microwave is nothing special other than the speech. Let’s say you double the price of the Temo making it 200 bucks and it was 100 percent accessible it then would still have been a better deal. Also I think they might make microwaves that uses a smart phone app to control it now.

Now all this being said if I could not find a microwave that I could buy that I could not make accessible to me then this might be an option. But I sure for what I use a microwave for I could find one for 150 bucks or less that I could use that would do the job. Yes 300 or more bucks is too much for a microwave and especially this size.  Also this is supposed to be a sell price! JST!

LOL $319 is still way too much for a microwave.  Even one that talks.  And really for over $300 you would think that adding a display so that sighted people could use it as well wouldn't be unreasonable.

If Hamilton Beach could sell the Temo talking microwave for $79, which is what they did, then why should we be forced to purchase one for over $300 because we require the talking feature. It can’t cost that much more to add that feature.?

Re: password recovery?

Carlos

Hi Mike,
I am aware of NirSoft, but again it depends on what types of passwords you want to view.  Even NirSoft does not have a utility for displaying Windows user account passwords.  The only utility they have that even comes close is LSASecretsView
which might allow you to view the auto-logon password for the currently logged in user.

For whatever it's worth, that NTPWEdit link doesn't appear to work on my system. Whether I click on the link inside the message or copy and paste it into the Run dialog, IE 11 appears to be trying to go to the web site, but it then just freezes.

On a similar; but slightly different; topic -- what's the easiest and most user-friendly utility to display passwords? I'm using Windows 7 and JAWS 16 and 17.

You can use NTPWEdit
to clear or possibly change the password, but I am not aware of any method to retrieve it.  And even to use NTPWEdit, you may have to boot into another Windows installation or a bootable environment like Win7PE.  I have never actually tried to use it on a different account on the same Windows installation so I don't know if that would work.  In either case, if you wind up having to boot into another environment, you can use my Win7PE images
which already include the NTPWEdit utility.

I'm not going to play around with changing the order of the whole list but, I was able to get the Safely Remove Hardware icon bac at the top.  This is what I did:
1. I went to, Notification area customize.....button,& opened.
2. I tabbed to, Safely Remove Hardware & Eject Media, & changed the way its shown to, only sho notifications, okayed my way out, & restarted the computer
3. I then turned on an external drive, went back into, Notification area customize.....button, & opened.
4. Tabbed to, Safely Remove Hardware & Eject Media, changed the way it's shown to, Show icon in Notifications, & okayed my way out / closed.
5. Pressed, Insert / Jaws Key + F11, & I'll be damned, it was back at the top!  LOL,  hahaha hahaha hahaha,  LOL

Note:  With moving the Safely Remove Hardware icon, it also made it first in the list whenn opening, Notification area customize.....button.

The order can be changed by dragging the icons to different positions using the mouse, but I am not aware of any way to reorder them which is accessible or just using the keyboard.  I suppose there might be some third-party applications which would let you do this as well, but again none that I am currently aware of.

Running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit & Jaws 16 latest.  Out of curiosity, is there any way of changing the order of the system tray icons in which they appear after invoking the, Insert + F11, keystroke?  My safely remove hardware icon used to be at the top but, for whatever reason it has just recently started showing at the bottom of the list.  It's no big deal but, like I said, it's more of a curiosity than anything else.  Thanks much.

Re: Blind Mice Mart Talking Microwave Sale

Yes this is true. There is no way they blind mice mart could compete. Walmart and Best buy buys by the train loads and blind mice mart might buy one or two or even a half a dozen at the time. I have bought talking products from Walmart and best buy and it is much cheaper than from a T store. But that is because they are buying huge amounts of the products. JSMT!

Gerald, I'm not defending the blindness vendors, but I think Walmart could sell the Temo at their price is because Walmart could buy in quantity.  We don't know what the blindness vendors paid for their ovens.

Not necessarily.  How much does it actually cost LG, one of the largest and most advanced appliance manufacturers in the world to add the speech feature to what is otherwise a basic compact microwave?  Maybe an additional $50?  So at most, this microwave should probably sell for about $200, not $320 or $370.  These merchants are obviously marking up the price to make a huge profit at the expense of their blind customers. Last week, I mentioned on this list, I think, that Independent Living Aids used to sell an audible battery tester for $30 that was clearly labeled “Radio Shack” on the bottom.  Before Radio Shack went belly up earlier this year, I could walk into my local store and buy this very same battery tester for only $12.95.  So these blindness-products merchants are most definitely engaging in predatory pricing practices, and they deserve just as much criticism as the manufacturers.

I still say just do what works for you, as we all come from different walks of life and we all wish for many different things, some the same who knows…

Today in this world no matter what we buy with a little extra umph to it is going to cost.

Well, I think the Hamilton beach is the prime example of what the main stream can do. It is not that hard to add speech if you consider it from the start of the making of the product but if you do it as a 2nd thought then yes the cost goes up dramatically. As it might be almost impossible to get the speech engine to read what on the screen as it might not even be real text at all but a picture of text. So yes all our appliances small and large could have speech to them and it would not increase the cost very little. If they did it from the get go. Even the cable boxes and dvd player and even computer could do this but you have to do it from the beginning. Like apple did and now some cable box companies are doing and even narrating movies if you do it from the get go. It is no different than building accessible web site or then trying to make it accessible after the fact. It is much easier to build accessible web site then come back and make it accessible. So this is where the cost is. Also if it is specific for the blind and the blind only then yes that cost goes up as the profit margin is not as great.  It is like buying the iPhone and getting cheap apps that does just as good or going out and getting A T product that is specific for the blind and it don’t have near the function and hope the company don’t go out of business or stop making the product all together. So is it price rip off with this microwave ? Yes and no it is a specific A T product just for us as it don’t even have a screen to it. So in that case no. But the fact is you can buy microwave much cheaper that you can operate very easy without the speech. So yes in that case it is a rip off.

But what we are forgetting here it is each person ability and what they like and is comfortable with. Too me no I would not at this time pay that kind of money but my 90 year old aunt it would be worth it for her! So it all depends it is in the holder view if it is a rip off or not! JMT!

I have presented two examples of a blindess-products merchant charging substantially more for a particular conventional product than a mainstream merchant.  If this isn’t price gouging, then what would you call it? Do you really believe that it is fair for a blindness-products merchant to charge almost double the price for a conventional product as a mainstream merchant?

You have shown that one merchant's prices are higher than another.  You have not shown that anything shady is going on.  You have simply documented a price difference and that is all you have done.  You have not demonstrated in either case, that the sellers are engaging in a two or three hundred percent mark up as your message implies they are doing.  Even if the higher priced merchant is overcharging, and we don't know why the merchant is charging more, you have not demonstrated that the lower priced merchant is overcharging, you have simply shown that the prices are different.

Also, you can't demonstrate a point by asking what evidence someone else has presented.  I don't have to demonstrate the cost of adding technology to a product.  I'm not making the claim of gouging.  You are.  I'm saying that you haven't demonstrated that it costs what you assume it does to add technology.  Since I'm not making a claim as to cost, I don't need to prove anything.  I'm saying that you haven't and you are the one making the claim.

Re: Blind Mice Mart Talking Microwave Sale

Matt

Yes, it is up to the consumer and the market to dictate the price. We do have a choice to buy A T product or not to buy one. The choice is yours that don’t mean the place is ripping you off. Now if you had no other choice like the blind community use to not have then this might be different. I personally would not buy it myself . But say I had a mother or father or brother or sister or whatever and they needed something like this because their ability just would not let them use a mainstream product and I had the money I would buy it for them. This is probably my last message in this thread.  John's point is well taken.  Saying or implying that blindness vendors are gouging blind people because Walmart undersells them is comparable to saying that the little convenience store in a gas station gouges customers.  Little convenience stores can't begin to compete with large retailers like Walmart on price.  People buy from them and pay a higher price for convenience.  If merchants that specifically sell to blind people sell products that are available elsewhere for less, it's up to the blind person to find the best price, if the blind person wants to put in the work to look.  It doesn't mean that the blindness merchants are doing anything unethical.

Again, you are making assumptions and maligning businesses without considering circumstances.

Gerald, I'm not defending the blindness vendors, but I think Walmart could sell the Temo at their price is because Walmart could buy in quantity.  We don't know what the blindness vendors paid for their ovens.

earlier, Gerald Levy, wrote:

And what evidence do you have that the cost of modifying this particular microwave to add speech costs more than a few dollars?  I have presented concrete evidence that blindness-products merchants engage in questionable pricing practices.  You have presented no evidence to the contrary that they don’t.  For your information, when the Hamilton Beach Timo/Talk Magic microwave was still available, both Blind Mice Mart and Independent Living Aids were selling it for $150, even though it could be purchased from WalMart for only $80.  And this was a mainstream product, not one specially modified with speech like the Magic Chef model. I know for an absolute fact that the Hamilton Beach  talking microwave was sold by ILA for $150 because the rehab agency I was working with at the time wanted to purchase one for me from ILA with whom they had a contract, but I declined the offer because I was perfectly satisfied with the conventional Panasonic microwave I already owned.

You have not presented any basis to support your assumptions.  You have not presented any information that the vednors you are maligning overcharge on other items of which the reasonable cost is known.  You have not taken into consideration the cost of adding accessibility to a product which will be sold to a very small consumer base nor have you given figures on what charge is necessary to recover the cost of modifying a product for a small consumer base.

In short, you are presenting your conclusions with no supporting evidence.  If accessibility had been built into the product at the outset and if it were available as a part of the product that was sold to everyone, that would be different and the price would not be higher than for other consumers.  You would be paying the mass production price of a mass produced item.  This is not such a case.

Yes he was and that is nice but nothing against him it is the rip off that the manufacture is trying to do to us for a cheap microwave .

LOL $319 is still way too much for a microwave.  Even one that talks.  And really for over $300 you would think that adding a display so that sighted people could use it as well wouldn't be unreasonable.

Re: Changing Order Of System Tray Icons

Take care.

Hi Mike,
The order can be changed by dragging the icons to different positions using the mouse, but I am not aware of any way to reorder them which is accessible or just using the keyboard.  I suppose there might be some third-party applications which would let you do this as well, but again none that I am currently aware of.

Subject: [TechTalk] Changing Order Of System Tray Icons

Hi All,

Running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit & Jaws 16 latest.  Out of curiosity, is there any way of changing the order of the system tray icons in which they appear after invoking the, Insert + F11, keystroke?  My safely remove hardware icon used to be at the top but, for whatever reason it has just recently started showing at the bottom of the list.  It's no big deal but, like I said, it's more of a curiosity than anything else.  Thanks much.
Take care.
Mike
