Yes. The KNFB Reader Classic is composed of a pda and a camera. They
each must be turned on separately.

Re: copying media info

Blaster

I'm not sure if this will help or not, but the information your
talking about is held in an ID3 tag embedded into the mp3 file. If
you google "ID3 tag" you'll find a ton of free ID3 tag readers, the
trick is finding an accessible one.

Go into properties, select the details tab and you're going to have to copy
the information in the edit fields one by one. If there's an easier way,

Re: moving folders from pop3 to iMap?

Hi Adam,

I keep getting a site error when trying to reach that ISP’s info page.

Anyway, you didn’t mention the email software she uses since I’m hoping it was Outlook because it would be quite easy simply to create an Outlook.Pst file, dump all her folders into it, close it, and then open it again after converting the email account to IMap.

This is why I use only Outlook, since email is easily contained in a single file, and therefore easily ported.

I even did this the other day when I wanted all my Windows email from many years on my MacBook running Office 365 for the Mac.

On the Mac, however, an import procedure was required, but it was still painless.

Best,

She has folders under the inbox.

What is the easiest way to get those folders and messages inside to imap?

I realise I need to make a new iMap account on each device.

Hi Jim,
Yes, you can certainly use the Kindle on a PC with either Jaws or NVDA.
The support has gotten much better in the last couple of months. And yes,
you can also use some of the Kindle e-reader's. Those are the devices that
are made just for reading books. Otherwise, the cheapest alternative is to
purchase a Kindle fire tablet. That lets you re-kindle books and also do
other things. And right now, those tablets are on a good deal of Amazon.
The cheapest one is the fire seven and I think it's $30 right now. The HD
eight is $50, and the HD 10 is $100 for the les expensive device. Aside from
size, the major difference that would concern us would be the fact that both
theeight and the 10 have two speakers, and they sound better than the seven.
Also the 10 has a newer processor and more storage space, although all of
them come with a card slot. I don't have personal experience using the E
readers, but I know that some of them can be used.

Re: BRF Files

Eleni Vamvakari

If I just plug the Blazer into my computer, I doubt that Windows will
recognise it as an embosser. Does a translator usually not have its
own drivers for such devices? If not, then must i install drivers for
this one? Do I just tell it to print, as I would with a regular
printer?

I don't have a braille display, and right now, I don't have a printer
plugged in to the computer. But I guess that answers my previous
question. I can just use a generic printer driver. Can I print
graphics this way? What if I had a file that was in txt or rtf with
no graphics? Could I make the Blazer emboss a tactile print file?
What about a Tiger Cub? My friend has one of those, and we're trying
to figure out how to make such files.

I am not receiving these from a regular bookseller or a transcriber.
This is the National Braille Press. To my knowledge, whatever they
have is what you get.

Thanks,
Eleni

Hi,

BRF files are already in braille. Generally, though not universally, they
are in contracted braille, but in any case, they are formatted so that they
will appear properly on a braille embosser or note taker without further
translation. Therefore, no translation package should be needed if you're
going to emboss them.

You write:
Note that, for regular rtf and txt documents, I just use Wordpad or
Notepad.

In that case, you can do that with these BRF files. They will not read
properly with your screen reader's voice, but will read fine with your
screen reader's braille display assuming the right settings are in place and
will emboss as if they are text or RTF. I assume you're using the generic
text printer driver.

You ask:
Are these brf files in Grade II or UEB? If they're in the latter, how can I
convert them to the former? Can they be converted to rtf or txt?

You'll need to ask the provider, BRF as a format can be in any braille code
the producer likes. Whether you can back-translate the files, and to what
format depends on what format they are in now and what software you have. If
I may respectfully say so, however, I'm not sure why you would do that. If
you want grade 2, and the files are in UEB, why not ask the provider to
provide you a copy in grade 2? If you're looking to translate them to text
or RTF, is the provider not able to provide you a better format like
epub/html/xml/Daisy?

Subject: [TechTalk] BRF Files

I recently saw several books from the National Braille Press that interested
me. Most were available in brf format, which works with notetakers and
embossers. I have a Braille Blazer. How do I emboss these files? Do I
need something like the Braille Blaster translator, or is there a way to
emboss them directly? Note that, for regular rtf and txt documents, I just
use Wordpad or Notepad. Are these brf files in Grade II or UEB? If they're

Re: BRF Files

Aman Singer

Hi,

Permit me to answer your questions under each question. You ask:

Do I need something like the Braille Blaster translator, or is there a way to emboss them directly?

BRF files are already in braille. Generally, though not universally, they are in contracted braille, but in any case, they are formatted so that they will appear properly on a braille embosser or note taker without further translation. Therefore, no translation package should be needed if you're going to emboss them.

You write:

Re: Issues with KNFB Reader Classic

Can anyone help me with these issues? I have no idea what is going
on, and would like to resolve them so that I could use my Reader.

I wrote this some time ago, but then misplaced my Reader. Now that I
found it again, I thought I would share this here and see if anyone
could help me. I haven't turned it on yet, but I am sure that the
problem still exists, since it didn't stop when I restarted it the
last time.

I have a KNFB Reader Classic. I have used it a few times in the past,
so I know that it works. Now, the pda turns on, and I can hear one
chime from the camera, but it doesn't seem to be recognised by the
reader. It keeps saying "camera off". I recharged both the pda and the
camera battery, reset the pda (not a cold reset), then reinstalled the
software, and it still didn't help. I never disassembled the units. I
read the user guide and the FAQ, and the only thing they said is that
the batteries could be low, or that the camera's mode switch may have
been moved to the wrong place. But I can't find anything explaining
what that is or how to check it. I even hit the smooth button (which
is also not explained) thinking that could help, but it didn't do
anything. What is going on, and how do I get the two devices to
recognise each other

Thank you.

Jeffery,

When you press the Insert key, it is instantaneous that Jaws should announce “ON” or “OFF”. When “ON”, the description of the keys function should be read and when “OFF” only the name of the key should be called out. I tried to make my Jaws stop announcing everything, but I could not make it do this. The only way to make it not talk that I know of is to turn speech off by pressing the Insert key and the space bar, then the letter S, repeating this key stroke turns speech back on. Otherwise, you could be pressing Insert plus the number 2 which toggles Jaws through speaking Words, Characters or None. I suppose that if you hold Insert + 1 down for 30 seconds and you just happened to catch the 2 key at the same time, you could be setting Jaws to speak No characters.

If you get the Google Home or the Home Mini and purchase a subscription to GooglePlay Music, about $10 permonth $15 for a family, you get a subscription to Youtube Red for free. As there is no screen, I don't know if it palys just audio files from Youtube Red or if that includes the audio only from Youtube Red.

As the Echo Dot accesses the internet to retrieve the information which is given the user, I would feel certain that she could access Youtube and play a video from there, or at least the audio from a video. An exact video may not be able to be played, but on which address a particular subject should be doable.

Hi Everyone,

As I wrote last week, I bought my friend an Amazon Echo Dot.

My cousin set it up for him using my IPhone because he owns neither a computer nor smartphone, or other kind of tablet.

He really wants to listen to YouTube videos of Indian music and movies; is there a way for Alexa to access that?

Or, should I return this to Best Buy and buy him a Google Home device.

Please advise.

Note: I only check this email address on the weekends; my regular

Thanks, and have a happy holiday season.

Hi Jim,
Yes, you can certainly use the Kindle on a PC with either Jaws or NVDA. The support has gotten much better in the last couple of months. And yes, you can also use some of the Kindle e-reader's. Those are the devices that are made just for reading books. Otherwise, the cheapest alternative is to purchase a Kindle fire tablet. That lets you re-kindle books and also do other things. And right now, those tablets are on a good deal of Amazon. The cheapest one is the fire seven and I think it's $30 right now. The HD eight is $50, and the HD 10 is $100 for the les expensive device. Aside from size, the major difference that would concern us would be the fact that both theeight and the 10 have two speakers, and they sound better than the seven. Also the 10 has a newer processor and more storage space, although all of them come with a card slot. I don't have personal experience using the E readers, but I know that some of them can be used.

Re: copying media info

Michael Boyd <mike122061@...>

There used to be a way of using one of the function keys, I thought it was the F6 key, but that doesn't seem to work, that would toggle you throu the different fields such as Name, Date, Number, Title, Contributing Artist, etc, and allow you to edit the informatin. By activating the edit function you could then use the Control + C command to copy the information for each item and paste it wherever you like. As far as I know, there has never been a way to dopy all of the metadata at once. I cannot get the function key to work for this operation any more, I don't know if I just forgot which is the right key or key combination to use, if the feature just isn't available anymore. I would love to find out how this is done again.

If you use a screen reader, or your cousin can see, then you can check to see which version of Windows is installed by opening the run dialogue by pressing the Windows key plus the letter R at the same     time, when the edit box appears, type in winver and press enter. The version of the current Windows installation will be shown there. If it says Windows version 1709……., then you have one of the latest versions of Windows 10 installed. If you did not know, when you started the install of Windows 10, in whatever method you chose, you can press the key combination Control + Windows + Enter to start Narrator and have speech during the installation.

Subject: [TechTalk] windows 10 update issue

Hi, I had my wife's cousin help me with upgrading my laptop with windows 8.1 to the free windows 10 upgrade.  The screen of the laptop is cracked, so he had to hook up the laptop to a digital tv using and H D M I cable.

The update to windows 10 apparrently downloaded and he installed it.

The computer was rebooted and now he does not know if the upgrade took to the laptop due to the H D M I drivers not being installed on the laptop.

Any way I can figure out if the windows 10 update installed correctly, or do I need to go out and have the laptop's screen replaced?

Thanks

Keith

BRF Files

Eleni Vamvakari

I recently saw several books from the National Braille Press that
interested me. Most were available in brf format, which works with
notetakers and embossers. I have a Braille Blazer. How do I emboss
these files? Do I need something like the Braille Blaster translator,
or is there a way to emboss them directly? Note that, for regular rtf
and txt documents, I just use Wordpad or Notepad. Are these brf files
in Grade II or UEB? If they're in the latter, how can I convert them
to the former? Can they be converted to rtf or txt?

Thanks,
Eleni
