Re: choppy bluetooth audio with the pc?

Laz

It sounds like your Bluetooth headset is using a power saving mode. If
there's a lapse in the audio it goes to sleep and when audio continues
it wakes up sometimes missing part of the first word when it starts
speaking. You need to look for a headset that doesn't have that power
saving mode or feature.

Hi all,

I regret my previous post. Perhaps this will clarify why I was so irritated at the long, and technical answer to the gentleman's post.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zambia

Also, the first item that comes up in the google search is one about the cholera epidemic which is occurring there.

He may need a scale for medical reasons. A talking scale may be helpful, but since he has not told us, simply answering his questions is probably best.

I do think I have the latest Flash version, but I am getting these "the latest version of Adobe Flash needs to be installed to play these files." messages. One place I get these messages is Hulu. I have installed Alternative Flash Player, but I don't think that's what some of these cites want. When the "download and install" option is offered for downloading Flash Player update, I try downloading it but it doesn't seem to be in or sites wouldn't complain about it. What do some Jaws users do to install this and make sure it is in? Or have you had trouble, having installed the player, getting sites to recognize that you already have the thing?

Thanks for any help.

Hi all,

I am reminded of an old friend who used to say, "Why be helpful when you're not?"

It is amazing to me how people can talk just to hear themselves doing so. All this is not answering the gentleman's question. Moreover, he speaks English as a second language!

Talking scales can be used by both sighted people and blind. If you need to keep track of your weight for medical reasons, or if you need it for a clinic this might be a good thing to buy. Otherwise, no, you do not need such a thing.

Re: I Need Your Explanation concerning Talking Bathroom Scales:

Mike Thomas

Scales are calibrated at factory to a certain tollerance. This would explain why different scales weigh differently. When you step on a scale at a doctor's office for the first time, consider this a base reading, and then the following times can determine your gain or loss from previous times.
I've noticed this same difference is present in blood glucose readings between two different units even from the same blood sample. I called the manufacturer of one and asked why there was something like a 13 point reading difference, and they got peeved that I tried to compare two different units. I therefore just do exactly what I said, consider each day's readings as an increase or decrease from the previous day. I wonder though if the same thing happens when tested at a lab with more accurate chemical readings, and more precise equipment.

Talking bathroom scales are not all created equal.

If one chooses to get a set of these scales, it is a good idea to compare the weight you get to a medical set of scales to determine if they read properly. If they are close, then that is good, if not it is a good idea to make note of how far off the talking scales are so one has a pretty good idea of what the actual weight is. This way, one would know how much to add or subtract to get a proper weight. I do not know if there are any talking scales that can be adjusted to fix this particular problem.

Cheers!

Talking bathroom scales are used for people to find out how much they weigh. both sighted and non-sighted use them for various reasons like perhaps someone's body circumference interferes with their ability to see the displayed weight, etc. If you can't see the display for whatever reason or would just appreciate the convenience of hearing it instead of seeing it and would like to keep track of your body weight then perhaps you could use one.

If you're not interested in knowing your body weight or have other ways to find out, then it wouldn't be necessary for you.

Re: using jaws 17 and windows 7/need help installing adobe flash

Gene and all, I am using Internet Explorer 11 and the message isn't a will you allow message, which I so wish it was. It's actually a "download and install flash player" and a download link is given. I have googled this, and one response was that maybe Java isn't enabled and some sites think flash isn't installed and it has something to do with java. Not really sure about how to work with Java and not real sure this would cause a site not to see flash but maybe there's a connection and I need to do something with Java? I wish Alternative flash was enough to keep these sites happy, and if another way to download flash instead of from their site can be done please share.

Browsers are generally not automatically allowing Flash content to run.  I don't recall  what browser you are using, but if you are running Firefox or Chrome, you may have to allow flash to be run before you can do whatever the site does.  I suspect the site interprets Flash not running as meaning it isn't installed.  If you tell us what browser you are using, someone can probably tell you how to allow Flash when the browser asks.  I've had very little experience with this but I suspect you'll have to reload the site after allowing Flash.  You can use f5.

On looking at the settings in the program, something I rarely do, it appears to me that the defaults are being used and they may not be able to be permanently changed in this version.  If we don't find anything out, I'll put the program in my Drop Box folder and send a download link to the list.

Hi Michael,

Yes, in all my notes, & my searches  state the setting to get Microsoft other products updates is supposed to be in the Find out More link in Windows update settings, but it's not there when I click on that link.  There used to be a Microsoft legal document that you had to check a couple of boxes agreeing to their terms..., then a couple more checkboxes were added to your update settings.  Well, I'm thinking the Office updates are part of the monthly Rollups they send out because I haven't seen an Office update in quite a long time.  No big deal, I checked for updates through Word's help, & none were available so everything is cool.  Thanks much.

It's been a long time since I fooled with Windows 7, but that setting should be located in the Windows Updates settings, and is most likely a check box that needs to be checked. This will get you Office updates plus any other Microsoft applications that you have installed and any 3rd party applications that push their updates through Windows Updates.

Well, my talking scale has a lcd display that my room-mate can see but, she prefers the talking feature instead of having to look down. It weighs in pg or kg! It speaks English and Spanish. I do think there is one that speaks French too! I do not know who makes it but the braille bookstore, nfb store have these scales cheaper than stupid amazon who over charge because their listed as medical devices because they talk!  Cheers Heather

Running a portable version of QRead

Cristóbal

Hello list,

Does anyone know how to run/install a portable version of QRead? The help documentation says you can run a portable version from a folder within a DropBox or some other cloud service for example, but other than that, it doesn’t say much.

Is it as simple as running the installer and selecting the in my case Google Drive or OneDrive folder instead of the regular N86Programs folder on the PC?

I have it installed on two machines and I’d like if possible to have my library and bookmarks and whatnot synchronized.

Thanks,
