Hi all,

I will be setting up an Amazon echo some time this week, can somebody telll
me what I'll need to do? All I know about the echo is what others who have
one have told me, and all that is is that you have to be careful not to say
the word Alexa when you're near the unit or it might get activated. Btw I
have an iPhone and I know there's an app, but if the echo is easier to set
up and use without using the app that'll be fine. I just want the easiest
way to set it up and use it.

The fix was pushed out the same day. The only way I figured out it was a Malwarebytes issue and not something nefarious going on with my machine was a Twitter posting from Malwarebytes acknowledging the problem and a whole lot of people being pissed about it. I thought it maybe had something to do with Malwarebytes since I noticed that the web protection was disabled, but wasn’t sure. That and the weird crashy/sluggish behavior was present on both my desktop and laptop.

Anyway, no harm, no foul I guess. First time in all the years of using Malwarebytes I had to deal with something like this.

I mean, there have been some pretty cruddy Jaws updates that have broken this or that and we have managed to survive. So unlike some folks, I’ll continue to use Malwarebytes and try to stay current as much as I can.

Earlier this morning, we published a protection update that caused connection issues for many of our customers. As a side effect of the web protection blocks, the product also spiked memory usage and possibly caused a crash. We have triaged this issue and pushed a protection update that resolves it.

If the update does not resolve the issue automatically for you, please shut down web protection, check for protection updates, and restart your computer.

The root cause of the issue was a malformed protection update that the client couldn't process correctly. We have pushed upwards of 20,000 of these protection updates routinely. We test every single one before it goes out. We pride ourselves on the safety and accuracy of our detection engines. To say I am heartbroken is an understatement.

We are working hard to not only triage your issues and get your computer or business back up and running but to also rebuild your trust. We are going to overhaul how we publish these protection updates so that this never happens again.

I am personally available to discuss both on this forum via personal message or at mkleczynski@...

Â

*** How to resolve / verify you have the fixed update package ***

Malwarebytes 3

Update package version 1.0.3803 (Malwarebytes 3) or v2018.01.27.12 (Malwarebytes 2.x) or higher contains the fix

Open Malwarebytes

Turn OFF web protection by Clicking on “settingsâ€, click to turn web protection OFF

Under Scan Status (right side), click next to “Updates†to have Malwarebytes download the latest database

Restart PC (Note it may take up to 2 restarts after the update to stabilize the system)

To confirm that you are on the latest database please follow the steps below:

Open Malwarebytes

Click on Settings

Click on the About tab

Next to “Update package version†if you see version 1.0.3803 or higher you are on the latest database which addresses the issue.

Â

Malwarebytes Endpoint Security (on-premises)

First step to get the update is to disable the real-time protection. To do this in the Management console:

Open up the policy the clients are on and go to the protection tab.

From here, disable the ‘enable protection module’ option.

Once this is done click OK. When your clients check in they will get this new policy update.

Once real-time is protection is disabled and your clients can communicate, highlight the endpoints on the client screen and click the update database button at the top.

After the update is applied, a reboot of the machine may be required.

Note: If your client cannot resolve internal addressing, then re-installing the agent manually on the machine will need to be done. The client will not be able to reach out to the server for a policy update and will never be able to turn off the real-time protection.

Â

Malwarebytes Endpoint Protection (cloud)

From the Malwarebytes Cloud console, go to the endpoints pane and select all the endpoints.

In the action drop-down, choose the ‘check for protection updates’ option to force an update on all endpoints to database update 1.0.3803 or higher.

This should fix the problem for the vast majority of Endpoint Protection endpoints. If endpoints are still affected after applying this, please reboot the machine.

If the remote agent is unable to reach out and get this update, then we must disable the web protection:

In the Malwarebytes Cloud console, Go to the settings> policies> and open up the policy the clients are on.

From here, go to the endpoint protection policy and turn off the “Web Protection†portion of the policy. Then:

If the machine is unresponsive, reboot the machine and log in.

Once in, right click on the tray icon and start a scan. This will force a database update and fix the issue.

Once updated, cancel the scan and reboot the machine.

When the computers are all online and updated, please turn back on the web protection again in the Endpoint Policy.

If the above doesn’t resolve the issue, please reach out to support at corporate-support@...

I admit I am presuming that they are not going to make a Google home app by their responses to making an Android app but I do get this from people when I call their Tech Center and they say they have no intention of doing an Android app I have not asked him about the Google home because I did not think that there would be two separate necessarily

Re: nfb newsline is bius

The below message appears to address the question from knoledge rather than speculation up to a point.  It appears that at least some people in NFB who deal with technology may believe that Android isn't as accessible as it appears to be from comments I've seen over time.  But that doesn't address whether the Google Home device will ever get Newsline.  The assumption seems to be that if There isn't an Android app, then the service won't be available on Google Home.

I don't know technically but I await informed comments on whether making something available on Google Home is equivalent to making a Google App.

And it might be a good idea, to answer the initial question, if Newsline will be available on Google Home, to ask NfB.  I did a Google search and saw no discussion on the subject anywhere.

Is the program working?  Sometimes, Windows reports a not responding message when a program pauses.  I don't know why but at times, when I use Audacity and it pauses, I get that message.  I'm not saying it should pause, but it does.  Then if I wait a little while, the program does what I expect.  If Thunderbird works, don't worry about it.

This would be a home phone, not a cell, just to clarify. I know they make them with talking caller ID, and I wonder if one of these may also have talking menus? If you know of none, I would like opinions on the built-in caller-ID home phones which have raised buttons and not a lot of extra frills.

Re: nfb newsline is bius

Olusegun  and all,

See this article:

And this wide disparity in the number of users is after the latest holidays.  NFB announced its beta testing of the Alexa skill, nowhere near release at the time, last summer.  So consider how much greater the ratio of Echo users was to Google Home users at that time.

And see this announcement in Blind Bargains from last summer.  You can see from how the announcement of the beta testing of the skill was worded by the Federation, that it was nowhere near completion at the time and still under very active development.

And to quote the portion that demonstrates this:
We are now seeking NFB-NEWSLINE users to beta test our NFB-NEWSLINE skill for the Amazon Echo. This is the first time the service interface is enabled through the spoken word. We will need to learn what works, what does not, and what innovations blind people will imagine through this new interface. Our future is only limited by our ability to imagine and build the solutions we seek."

And that's called guilt by association.  You have no basis to conclude, you have no information from NFB, nor from any other credible source, indeed, not from any source, about whether such access is planned for the future or why it isn't.  The operating system used to run such devices is irrelevant.  Just because a certain operating system is used is not any indication of any sort of discrimination.  How much longer has the Echo been around?  Probably, far more blind people currently use it.  You have not provided any credible basis or evidence of discrimination and if you want to know what's going on instead of baseless speculations, contact Newsline and see what they say.

Also, to this point, you haven't answered any points I've made and you persist in such speculations based on nothing.

****Section, Using Quick Access in Windows 10 with Jaws

You have two choices of how to open File explorer in W-10.

One Quick Access, two This PC.

At first I was using This PC instead of Quick access, to open my computer in the new File Explorer options.

But, through additional testing and experimenting, I have decided that File explorer Quick Access is a better choice.

You can also, pin, This PC, to Quick Access, this gives you the best of both worlds.

Now, when you press, Windows key+E, you open a list of items, you have pinned to File explorer quick Access, including your This PC shortcut.

This is very handy and a nice time saver when working on several tasks, at the same time.

****So, how do I set my W-10 computer to open using File explorer Quick access.

1. Press the Windows key, type in, file explorer options.

2. Press Enter on, File Explorer options, Control panel.

3. You will hear, File Explorer option dialog, General page, Open File Explorer to combo-box, Quick Access, one of two.

4. If you hear, This PC instead, up arrow one time to Quick Access.

5. Tab one time to, browse folders, open each folder in the same window, radio button checked.

6. Tab again to, click items as follows, double click to open an item single click to select, radio button checked.

7. Tab again to, Privacy, show recently used files in quick access checked box not checked.

8. Tab again to, Privacy, show frequently used folders in quick access checked box not checked.

I personally have both these check boxes unchecked.

9. Tab again to, Privacy clear button.

10. Tab again to, restore defaults button.

11. Tab again to, the OK button, do not press enter.

12. Press Control+Tab to go to, the View page tab.

13. You will land on, Folders views reset folders button.

14. Tab one time to, tree one treeview, files and folders opened.

15. Down arrow to, Don't show hidden files, folders, or drives, on.

16. Down arrow to, Show hidden files, folders, or drives, off.

This is what these two items should be set as.

17. Down arrow to, Hide extensions for known file types, off.

Press the spacebar to change any of these settings.

18. Press Shift+Tab, go to, folder views, reset folders button.

For example:

When pressing Enter on my Desktop folder here, I have an alphabetical list of 14 Internet shortcuts.

First letter navigation works in all these lists, in File explorer Quick Access.

Use your up and down arrow keys or first letter navigation, to explore your pinned items under File explorer quick Access.

What does it mean to sink your OneDrive folders?

When you choose to sink your OneDrive folders on your computer.

You have a copy of these files online, on your OneDrive page.

You also place a copy of these files in your OneDrive folder.

Now, the advantage of doing it this way is:

When you are inside the OneDrive folder and inside a folder and inside a opened text file in one of your shared folders, for example.

Whatever changes you make to that text document, are automatically changed in the text document stored in OneDrive.

Can I use the default folders of OneDrive, to place my audio or text files into for back up, or for sharing with others?

Yes, you can use them the same way, as I explained above.

OneDrive is a cool and easy way, to share large audio or text files with others.

Microsoft gives each person a free 5 GB's of storage space on OneDrive.

Office 365 users get one TB of OneDrive storage.

I am currently sharing two OneDrive links to two different folders on my OneDrive on my computer, with no issues.

If any of you still have questions about using OneDrive, please let me know.

Subject: [TechTalk] new windows 10 and jaws user favors

Greetings, I recently received a windows 10 laptop and for Christmas and have upgraded to JAWS from window eyes (version 2018 or 18 or whatever).

I have a couple of issues and do not want to sound like a newb, a clueless computer user, or a loser, but I need some serious help in learning how to use windows 10 in conjunction with jaws.

Are there any tutorials on the web, from companies, and/or from blind assistive foundations (if I need to purchase them I gladly will) to learn this stuff.

I started as a sighted computer user and worked my way through the windows 95, 98 SE, and Xp releases and as a blind person with windows xp and window eyes.

I have asked some questions on this list, and some have been answered (with my heartfelt thanks) and some have gone unanswered (probably because they are too simple for members to deal with).

My windows xp netbook has IE 6 on it (I think) and only a few websites are being displayed on that browser and when I install firefox it crashes every time I try to use it, so I will have to get actual websites to go to for tutorials if any exist, to pass on to my cousin so he can look them up on his computer and I can order them on his computer.

I have been able to install jaws on the windows 10 laptop, but I cannot access where I need to enter my wifi password to activate the jaws program with my owner's code as a first step.

Many thanks

Keith

The guy having to relearn everything over again.

Sis Pam, not so much about calling the News Line on the phone; we're talking
about being able to access it using the Google Home line of products! Sure
enough, these products run the Android OS as does the Echo with Amazon's
modifications!

Re: Malware Bytes went rogue

I didn't use that argument nor did I imply that position.  I was talking about one program.  I don't know if old antimalware programs that still can use the current data base can detect everything as well as newer versions.  But you are assuming and I am not.  Also, whether detection can be done as well, removal of newer malware often cannot.  Detection and removal are two different things.  And you indicated that the old version was more accessible and you said that that is one reason you use it.  I have seen no indication that that is the case with the current version and, until I see evidence of it that contradicts the indications I have that the new version is as accessible, I wont assume it is.  I haven't seen enough on the subject to do more than say that it appears the new version is as accessible.  Whether it is or not, a lot of blind people are using it so its useable.

Well, Gene if you are going to use the argument that it is always better to use the latest version of a program, then why are you still using Windows 7 instead of Windows 10?

You don't know if it is just as effective.  It is using the same data base but I have no technical knowledge to assume that, when you are four or five years behind, that changes have or have not been made to make new versions somehow work better with the data base.  I don't have the technical knowledge to assume anything on the subject.

If you want to use an old, very old, version when the new one is evidently accessible, that's your choice.  But don't assume things.

Malware Bytes 1.75 uses the very same database definitions as the latest version.  So it is just as effective at detecting malware threats.  I use it myself on a regular basis, and it still does the job it was designed to do, despite your assertion that it is outdated and lacks the newest features.  At least it is JAWS accessible and is stable and reliable, which is not necessarily true of later versions. Why take a chance of encountering problems with a later version of Malware Bytes when version 1.75 still works? I believe in the old adage that if it ain’t broke, why fix it?

It isn't a crap shoot.

Malware Bytes has a good reputation.  Any company may send a bad patch.  Microsoft has.  Norton has; I've seen news accounts of others.  I wouldn't be at all surprised if list members could provide lots of examples of this or that reputable company sending a bad patch.

You are advocating using a four or five year old, I don't know just how old, version of the program.  You don't know how or in what ways it has become more limited in its abilities after all this time.  The new version of the program are, evidently, accessible enough to use. Many blind people are using the newest version and I've seen very few complaints and the few questions I've seen are generally not on accessibility per se, but on how to work with the program in terms of accomplishing certain tasks.

That’s why it is probably best to use Malware Bytes 1.75, the only version that is still totally accessible.  Using a later version can be a real crapshoot.

Yesterday, my wife and I had problems with our systems and I thought I would pass this information along in case anyone else had problems.  The culprit was Malware Buytes.  Our systems were sluggish almost to the point that we couldn't use them.  Mine straightened out on it's own but my wife had to to into safe mode and uninstall the program.  Here is some information from Malware Bytes.
