Re: taking the Wd My passport drive a part

Also, at this point, the nature of the problem isn't known.  If you don't have the technical knowledge and don't want to try investigating the problem, taking the hard drive or sending it to one of the places listed in the disk recovery information listed at the page you were sent a link to, you can have the drive checked to see if the problem can be fixed.  There may be no need for data recovery.  Or there may be some other way to get the drive checked by a competent person but this woud probably void the warranty.

I don't know enough about this to discuss the matter to any extent, but often, a complete failure to connect is caused by a failure of the enclosure and the drive is fine.  Replacing the enclosure solves the problem in that instance.

My warranty isn't up until 2019. I barely use this HD. It was only
used for occasional backups. I've been in contact with them for the
past two weeks, I think.
I gave a list of the things I've done to try and get my HD to work.
Including buying a new USB cord, following their directions on their

The first email basically asked me to do what I already said I did

I had already said that it didn't work on any USB ports on my laptop
or my old computer. I then did a screen shot of that same drive with a
flash drive connected. Their page about data recovery wasn't helpful

I'll point out that my last message didn't cover transfering data.  If the data can be accessed without data recovery procedures, that's a different story and I can see where a warranty might cover that.  at this point, we don't know what the situation is in your case.

You have not stated how old these drives are, but Western Digital has a very good warranty on their drives, and their support group is very good as well. Chances are, if the drives are still within warranty, they would probably replace them for you and transfer your data onto the new drives. Go to their website to find their contact information.

Re: taking the Wd My passport drive a part

I don't know this, but I expect you read the information correctly.  Restoring data is expensive, at times very expensive.  Companies aren't going to expose themselves to liability of this sort.  If it costs 500 dollars to retrieve information, and I suspect that's much lower than the usual cost, and if one half percent of mechanical drives fail per year that are still under warranty, and the company sells millions of hard drives, that could cost them a lot of money.  My figures are not meant to be correct as such.  They are intended to demonstrate the kind of unreasonable cost imposition of such liability would entail. There is probably standard legal writing in the warranty stating that the company isn't liable for damages of any kind, resulting from use of the product.  The product is warranted, not the information on the product.

The same with computers themselves.  If a computer fails during warranty, the computer company isn't liable for the information on the computer.

The law generally imposes the requirement that people act reasonably.  I am not a lawyer, but I would think the law would consider not backing up material to be a lack of reasonable prudence and won't impose liability on a manufacturer or technician for loss of files.

I've actually been talking to their tech support and was finally told
today that mine appears to be broken. I was told to contact where I
bought it or if it is still under warranty to fill out an RMA or
whatever to have it replaced.
That doesn't help me worth crap when it comes to accessing my data on
the HD. They give links to place where you can take the HD to have the
data recovered, and not void the warranty, but of course that is
something you have to pay for. If I read that wrong someone please
tell me wrong... I would think that should be covered under the
warranty ... otherwise wtf is the point?

I am not a tech but I really doubt that drives should ever need cleaning except, maybe in very unusual circumstances.  I've never seen cleaning discussed or advocated in any articles I've read discussing problems of hard drives and their causes.

Also, and my apologies for not including it in my previous message. I don't know about the particular HD in question that can't be used wirelessly with the Windows10 machine, but if it's anything like the WesternDigital MyBook NAS that I used to use, it had support for more than just the Samba protocol. I've not tried to configure a Samba connection on Windows10 yet, but if it doesn't work for that particular drives network connection, I'd look and see if it supports a different protocol such as FTP, etc.

The outer plastic case is simply a case for the drive to fit into that also contains the port and circuitry for connecting it through USB. Either way, once the actual HD has been opened, I would imagine it would take a super delicate hand to do any sort of cleaning of the parts in there, heads or whatever as they can be super easy to damage. I've also herd that once you open an HD and expose it to the air, mostly because the dust and whatever that might be floating around that it's pretty much a done deal that somethings going to get screwed up unless you've got a super clean environment to open it up in. Even just a few specs of dust that might end up on one of the platters would not be a good thing at all for the HD.
Take care.

Hi.  I am wanting to open up my Western Digital drive to access inside
of it.  However, it is covered entirely by two plastic coverings sealed
tightly together with no screws to unscrew as a way to detach them.  Is
there a way to open up the plastic covering to maybe clean the drive's
magnetic head and motor? Thanks and cheers!

Jim, go to the podcasts bookshelf and you will find an item that says add podcast.  I don't remember the search options but I think one is title or search by name.  Under that one you type in the name you are looking for.

You mention your hotspot, but I'm a little confused. Do you mean that your laptop, the one in question here has no trouble staying connected to the Hotspot but doesn't stay connected to your home router?

someone please tell me what is going on and how to fix it? I have
never seen this on any other machine.
