Re: voice dreamer and ready to go

I've used both apps and can say I wish I never bought the read2go app.
It was a waste of money. VDR gives you a ton more control over what
you are reading, no matter the format. It is easier to navigate books,
make bookmarks, sort books (by folders and other ways) and the
ability to use/buy new voices and the control you have over what you
have is awesome. I haven't used the read2go app in a few years since I
got VDR.You can have it connect to bookshare, dropbox, or other cloud
services. The browse for bookshare isn't too bad--I generally browse
on my computer and put the books in a folder in my dropbox.
Voice dream reader is so very nice. It handles all forms of text
documents and I can also listen to mp3s in it.
I use codex to convert my kindle books to epub so I can read them in
voice dream reader. Most of the books I purchase don't have DRM and
that is a whole other controversial topic I'd rather not get into.
Before I got VDR I used to convert the .xml in the bookshare book to
html then convert that to mobi and use the feature to mail items to my
kindle to be able to read them with the kindle app. That is how much I
did not like read2go app....
It might be a better app now, but I love voice dream reader.

Good evening,

I got a e-mail from bookshare telling me about the half price for
voice dream and wanted to ask if this is something I should have if I
am wanted to read kindle and bookshare books on my ipad? I also read
about the ready to go apt for $19, what is all of your thoughts.

Both of these apts are new to me.

Thank you

Re: default browser

I don't know why Internet Explorer comes up since firefox is your default browser.  But it doesn't matter.  When the file starts to play in firefox, use the command control s to open the save as dialog in firefox.  It opens the save as dialog because you haven't saved this file before.  then save the file just as you would any file working with a standard save as dialog.  If there is a pause button and you don't want to hear the file while you are saving it, pause the file before issuing control s.

A certain email I get has a link in it to an audio file (podcast).  When I press enter on the link, firefox comes up and plays that file.  This is what should happen, since firefox is my default browser.  However, when I right click or call up the context menu, choosing save the file, it tries to bring up internet explorer to download it.  internet explorer has something wrong with it and will not connect to the site.

Does anyone know how I can make my default browser, firefox, connect and download the file without playing it.  Or maybe how can I save it once firefox starts to play it?

Suggestions will be appreciated.  Thanks.

Paying for someone else's ride share

Cristóbal

Hello list,

I recall reading a few weeks ago that Uber was going to start allowing people from within the app to pay for a third party’s ride. I havent’ had the chance to use this feature and was curious if any one has in fact done so and whether the process was pretty straight forward and accessible. I’m not sure if Lyft is offering the same thing.

I know there were always workarounds with drivers. A little extra cash to drop off person X, Y or Z or they’d let you send someone else in your stead, but since the actual feature is now available, thus my interest.

I’ve got a visually impaired friend who really has no disposable income and often I invite him to this or that or to the house, but if he doesn’t have a friend or family member that can drop him off or pick him up… he simply doesn’t have the extra funds for an Uber or Lyft ride every now and then. I don’t mind paying for his ride from time to time since it would be more convenient for everyone. Just send the car straight to him and have him dropped off or get him a ride home if it’s late or whatever.

Thanks,

If your computer has wifi, you can go to alexa.amazon.com without downloading an app to your phone.
You can set up and manage your echo devices from there.

If you have a Spot or Show you can set them up using their touch screens without going to the web or using the app.
Hope this helps,

You have to download the Amazon Alexa app in order to set up your echo.. And your echo.has to stay plugged in. It will walk you through the set up process and then it will tell you to go into the app in order to connect it.

Hi all,

I’m the guy who asked the original question. What was voting at a precinct like? Will I  went to the precinct with my wife, and all was  good. The voting machine was easy to use, fun too. But… for me, I still like voting absentee. I know. Some of you think that is a cop out, and for you it is I guess. For me though, I like taking time to read the voter guide, and my wife and I discuss the issues, and there is no pressure to get out of the voting booth so another person can use it, etc. I would use the machine again, sure, but I still like voting absentee better. For me it works. Smile. Jim

I agree with you, given my experience with the menu, and the general

Re: UEB Braille code and restaurant menu inaccessibility

Ueb was forced upon us by a bunch of sighted people who think that we need to read every print format we don't know what it stands for and it only adds to the bulkieness of braille and makes our braille very cluttered up.  Sighted people read with their eyes and not with their fingers.  Somthing that would like nice to them looks very messy for blind readers.  I know that in magazines there is a page that says symbles used in this magazine are then they list them.  Maybe in the menus there was no page like that. If the blind were consulted about we would ever have ueb because the blind would have said no way.  I think that they are trying to bring about the demise of braille for the 10 percent of us who read it.  The high cost to produce braille will only increase then we will have less and less of it and thats what they want.  They are robbingus of our literacy and our independence and access to verious content.  If they had to read with their fingers they would not like it either.  The 9 contractions were there for a reason it worked and there was no need to get rid of them.  There is no confution if you look at the context in which they occure.

Hello,

Last week I went with a group to a restaurant which I had been to before and
like going there due to their Braille menu I can choose my own food without
having to have someone read me the menu.

I discovered frankly to my consternation that they had updated their menu
and this new version used the new (well new to me) UEB Braille code format.
I couldn't make heads or tails of it.

The purpose of this email is twofold: first, to express my consternation at
this turn which has made reading menu accessibility go down? Second, to
generate discussion, opinions, and any resolutions to this issue.

I'd prefer not to have to unlearn x years of Braille reading.

Thanks.
Dave.

2 messages when firefox is started/netscape dispatch WND & server not found

joanne

First, I know what "server not found" usually means--that you're off-line or the server might be down. But when I use a windows 7 desktop
and start Firefox ESL version, I see the "server not found at the bottom of the perfectly online page. I can click links or do searches, etc., but the "server not found" shows up at the bottom and the page is fine.

It also seems that most times I open Firefox it says netscape dispatch WND as the page loads.

Can these 2 things be corrected or is it just something that happens in Firefox a lot?

Thanks.

goldwave trim question

I know that in Goldwave, one of the trim commands is control plus T which trims everything outside the start and end points that are set.

What is the command for trimming everything inside the start and end markers?

And what is the command to set the start and end markers back to their original points after the trim?

Thanks
