Hello,

I've noticed this before, but thought I would ask-

Depending upon whether I use a Cartridge, or a Flash Drive, the Battery
Charge will last either longer, or much shorter.

If I use a Cartridge, the Battery lasts more than 29 hours. If I use the
typical Flash Drive, the battery will last only 19 hours.

It isn't a Big thing, but being a Curious Guy, was just wondering why
there is this difference in Battery life.

Anyone know why there is the difference?

Ok, I have to fill out a W9! I found an accessible copy from the IRS

I do have an electronic copy of my signature, but I do not know how to

avoid having to print the form and then scan it after signing it. Thanks a
ton as always for all help!

I don't have one. Cathy Anne Murtha has a very good one but
you may not want to spend the money. it costs about seventy
dollars, as I recall. I don't know what else is available

Also, while looking at the message, I see that fragments of
the message I thought I had deleted were included after my
signature. While Windows Basics would help most people be
far better Windows users if they don't know them well, I
thought I had removed my comments on that because I had
discussed the topic before in the past with you and I didn't
see the point in repeating what I said again. You
considered what I said in the past and it's your decision.
also, depending on what you do and how you use the computer,
you may not see the point of spending time learning these
things in a systemnatic way unless you just enjoy doing so.
There are real advantages, not needingt voluminous notes not
needing to do a lot of rote memorization, being able to look
at various unfamiliar interfaces and see the underlying
structures and pretty much know how to work with them, but
if you are already doing what you want to do, know the
commands you usually want to use, and are not learning new
programs much, you may not want to spend the time.

Don't change file extensions. The file extension tells
Windows what file to open a program with and if you change
an extension, it may open with the wrong program and it may
not be able to display or work with the file properly even
if the file is supposed to open in the program. If you get
an RTF attachment, and you change it to DOCX, Word will
expect a DOCX file. It is a different format.

If you open an attachment from the e-mail program, it
retains it's original extension. If you save the file, it
should be used with its original extension except in rare
specific cases, one of which I'll give as an example later.

If you want, for example, rtf files to open in Word, tell
Windows to open RTF files in Word. Don't change the
extension of the file.

I assume the way you tell Windows to open a file with a
certain extension in a certain program is the same or about
the same in Windows 10, using the context menu, as in
earlier versions. But I don't Know that. I therefore will
wait to see what other people say about using this method.

But unless there is a specific reason to do so, for example,
epub files are actually zip files and you can easily read
them outside of an epub reader by changing the extension to
zip and doing one or two other things, you shouldn't change
the extension of a file.

You don't have to switch to html. You will be a better
Windows user if you try this using plain text. There are
two attachments in the message. Select the one you want in
the list. Then save it. Before, you saved the wrong attac
hment. In HTML, there is onley one attachment, In plain
text, if the writer has added a attachment, you will often
see two. Do you have your Windows set to tell you file
extensions? When you are in file explorer and you are up
and down arrowing. do you hear name of file then txt, docx,
mp3, etc or do you just hear the name? Having Windows
announce extensions is very important as a blind user.

Thank you, Gene and everybody for your forbearance and your

attachment issue was the exact same. I remember that used

I don't know to what extent you wish to pursue this. Here
are my thoughts after seeing the entire thread over the last
few days:
If the message isn't private, you could forward it to
someone off list and see if that person can open it. Also,
are the attachments you can't open all of the same
extension?

Regarding not being able to open the attachments from the
keyboard, I doubt this has anything to do with JAWS but that
needs to be tested. Opening attachments has nothing to do
with what a screen-reader does. Why only certain
attachments, which is why I asked about the extension? I'm
trying to see if there is a commonality. Also, are you
reading mail as html or as plain text? You said that when
you saved the attachment, you got a copy of the e-mails.
That causes me to think that you are reading mail as plain
text. If you do that, you will often see an html attachment
of the message content. In your case, if you are reading
mail as plain text, you should have seen two attachments.
There should have been a list in the save attachments
dialog. You would have up and down arrowed to the
attachment you wanted to save, then saved it. Or at least,
that's what you do in save attachments in programs I've
worked with. Try saving the attachment again, tab around
the entire save attachments dialog and see if there is a
save attachments list. Up and down arrow in the list. Do
you see more than one attachment? If not, try left and
right arrowing. There may be something going on that is
keeping you from opening certain attachments. But as yet,
we have so little information about the nature of the
attachments that we can form no hypothesis about what, if
anything, they may have in common and what possible remedy,
if any, we might propose.

Thanks, Ann. When I Shift Tabbed and got on the attachment,
I pressed Alt-F and went to Save as, and said an
attachment.doc. So in Documents, I found the emails back and
forth to this person, not the attachment.

Furthermore, this one, I have copied, because it is
important, but whatever my cousin sends, I do not care
enough to bother with trying to save it then go over to
documents to read it. I get around 500 emails a day, so her
attachments are not a high priority.

I won't give up on this, but won't agonize. If I can't have
it, too bad, there's a whole big world out there. However, I
think it is a gyp on the money I spent. Regardless of what I
think, it just is what it is.

Hi all,

No, it's not the context menu! It's the alt-f, some call it
backstage, menu! The context menu will not do what you want
it to do. There is nothing wrong with Jaws except that it's
top heavy with so many add-ons and junk it's hardly
recognizable as a screen reader. Jaws is reading exactly
what is there. <smiling> In this case it's behaving
correctly.

If you want to open the attachment, merely do a shift-tab
when in the message and when it says attachments, use the
right arrow to see the list and open the attachment by
pressing enter on it.

If you want to save the attachment, do an alt-f and go down
to save-attachment and follow the prompt. If you don't
change it, it will save the attachment in documents which is
under This PC in win10.

It sure doesn't help if you get wrong information. Again,
it's *not* the context menu, it's the alt-f to go to
backstage or file menu or
whatever you call it. Sheesh!

Hi Adam!  If you are using the desktop App, and are using JAWS.  I would do the following:

  1. In a spreadsheet, make sure you are on the row that contains the column names.
  2. Now, use the quick settings to make sure that the define name row and title override option is set to off.  Press Insert plus the letter V to pull up the JAWS quick settings.  Excel must have focus.
  3. Once you have made the change, press the applications key, and use the up arrow key to locate the define name option.  Press enter to activate it.

Type the following, Title.. followed by the last cell that has date on your spreadsheet.  For example.  Title..F10, with F10 representing the last cell that has data in your sheet.  Note the letter T in Title should be capitalized.  Hopefully this works for you.  Good luck.

Hi all,
I used to be able to use ctrl 3 to define the name for columns so if you have columns across the top of a sheet you could tell which column you were on
if you were a few rows down.
This doesn't seem to work any more.
Does anyone know if this has been changed in office and if so the new command?
I realise I can do the same thing in Jaws but the other way was screen reader generic.

instead of the other programs you discussed and can't use now, for whatever
reasons. You can use Webvisum with version of 42 of Firefox. You don't
have to use version 45. I suggested using a portable version because I
thought you were probably using a version of Firefox that is too new to work

I'm sorry for the confusion and I should have been clearer in my earlier answers.  Try Webvisum and see if it works for the captchas you want to work with.

42 works with webvisum.  You may need the newer version of webvisum.  I don't know, at this point, whether people get better results using the Webvism site to download the program or use the version that was released by someone who isn't affiliated with NVDA.  Others may comment.  But you don't need an earlier version of Firefox.

Now I have what may be a very dumb question. . . . how do i install this

Use an earlier portable version of Firefox for sites where you need to fill in a captcha.  Use your other current browser or browsers for general browsing.

Hi

I have up-graded to latest firefox, unfortunately, neither captcha be gone or rumola work or can be installed with the version I am using. I tried to install captcha be gone but the file is corrupt and having messaged them, I have heard nothing back. I tried to install rumola this morning it is not supported. What do I do please? I am using windows 10 pro and firefox 62 I think.

Hi.  Thanks for this.  I didn't think Webvism worked with that version of Firefox.

Now I have what may be a very dumb question. . . . how do i install this
file?  When i press enter, Windows wants to know what program I want to
use to open the file.  If I extract the files using 7Zip, I get a list
of files that I have no clue how to work with.

Should I be looking for some kind of executable file?

Re: google chrome list

There may be a list but that isn't usually the best way to learn a program when you know nothing about it.  There is a tutorial, done, I believe, by one of the members of this list.  He'll probably send it to you or to the list as a whole.

In addition. browsing is browsing with any browser that uses The Virtual PC Cursor or, as some screen-readers call it, browse mode.  Commands such as move to next heading, button, etc. are browse mode commands.

If you want to work with settings, that is a different interface than whatever browser you are now using.

I won't say more now because the tutorial may well cover comments I might make.
