Hi all

Using jaws 17, windows 10, outlook 2016 on my Lonovo desk top

When I go see my folders by using the control Y key

Under contacts there is a notification that says” contacts(this computer) 2 unread

What does this mean?

I mean, I know what not read means but why is it in my contacts.

When I go to my contacts there is no where to find who or what I have not read, since it is just my contacts.

Just need some clarification.

It doesn’t get in the way of anything just wanting to know

Thanks

Re: Trying to remove all of NVDA and Code Factory Voices

You can try running a restore point from before you did anything.  If you don't have system restore enabled, you should enable it immediately.  You need a way to revert the system for problems such as defective uninstallations of programs, something unexpectedly becoming corrupted in an unusual way where the only efficient way to eliminate the problem is with a restore point or, in a case like this, where troubleshooting led to unexpected results.  I'm not saying someone won't provide you instructions that will work.  But I am saying that, when a solution appears to be more trouble than its worth, a system restore may be a good efficient way to solve something.

Subject: [TechTalk] Trying to remove all of NVDA and Code Factory Voices

Hello,

I have a Windows 7 System, with NVDA.  I bought the Extra Voices from
Code Factory.

I installed the new voices and ran the Utility that joins the new voices
with NVDA.

However, when I started up NVDA I get the Demo screen telling me that my
Demo Time has expired, and if I wish to purchase these voices I can by
contacting Code Factory etc.

I would press Enter on the OK, and NVDA would come up, talking with the
new Code Factory voices.

Well, Mr. Needs Everything to work the way it Should, decided to see if
he could fix the problem, by reinstalling the Code Factory software.
But the same problem remains, and one of my three installs was used up.

So, I decided to Uninstall everything, NVDA and the new voices.  So went
through Programs and Features to do the Uninstall.

And here is my current problem.

When I attempt to reinstall the latest NVDA program, when the install is
going to bring up the User Account Control, which asks me if I want to
allow this program to make changes to the system, instead of this
message coming up, NVDA just Beeps once every second or two.  And it
will Beep all night if I left it that long.

The NVDA Install never installs the NVDA files, and I am never prompted
to allow NVDA to make changes to the System.

So now I have no way to install NVDA, or those extra Code Factory voices.

Anyone know what I might do to totally uninstall everything for NVDA and
the Code Factory voices?

Something has gotten twisted, and am just needing some guidance to
untwist this mess to make it right.

Thanks for any help on this,

Grumpy Dave

Well, I don't know how I did it, but I disabled my antivirus again, it still wouldn't work, restarted my computer and it still didn't work.

I tried the same routine one more time, and now it's fixed. I'll hang on to this e-mail in case something like it happens again.

Thanks.

Hi Vicki,

What version of Outlook Express are you running?  I'm assuming you're running one of the builds from Rafail B's website.  I've never had this particular problem happen to me, but it sounds like you might have to run the same build installer again to correct the problem.  It could also be a corrupted Deleted Items folder.  What you can do is find the, Deleted.ItemsDBX folder, delete it, restart Outlook Express and a new Deleted Items.DBX folder will be created when you restart OE.  I would delete the DBX file first to see if this fixes the problem before running the installer.  This is where your DBX files are stored but, make sure OE is closed / not running when you do the following:

C:\Users \ YourName \ AppData \ Local \ Identities

Press enter on the identity you want to work with, then press enter on the Microsoft folder Press enter on the Outlook Express folder, & this is where
you will find all your .DBX files.

Delete the, Deleted Items.DBX file, restart the computer, start OE, and a new Deleted.DBX folder should have been created.  Let the list know what happens.
Take care.  Mike.  Go Dodgers!

Re: problem with e-mail client

Gene

You don't have to go through all that trouble.  The deleted messages folder is corrupted.  Mail can't be sent to it.  using shift delete bypasses that folder and directly deletes mail.  System Restore doesn't revert Outlook Express message folders because the designers don't want messages to be lost when system restore is run.  You might correct this problem and lose some or a lot of other mail, depending  on how old the restore point is.

To return the deleted messages folder to its uncorrupted condition, find and delete the deleted messages.dbx file.  Outlook Express must not be running.  Then run Outlook Express and it will automatically create a new folder.  If you want to save messages from the corrupted folder, don't delete it, cut and paste it somewhere else.  Then, see if you can read messages using a utility that let's you read dbx files.  Someone shoud know the name of this kind of utility and be able to describe it further.

If no one gives you the procedure to delete the DBX folder, I can look at an old Outlook Express I have on one of my computers.  But I would have to look at how this is done and perhaps make notes since I haven't looked at how you do this perhaps for years.  But someone may well already have material on how to do this so I'll wait and see.

Vicky, you could possibly sell both products as they are! There are, I'm
sure, quite a number of technical minds that could probably use the parts
to resurface similar pieces of equipment and thus give them new leases on
life.
If the cost of repairs is higher than what you can get for them when sold
as is, I'll suggest shying away from having to spend those greens!

Hi Vicky and All,
This may be a guide in pricing.
About three years ago, I purchased a used Millennium 40 in Absolutely
Excellent condition for $300.00 U.S. funds.

Now, what we are talking about, as far as Vicky has stated, is a Millennium
20.

Actually, I could use the Millennium 20, now, for parts to repair what I
have.

As I mentioned, I purchased my Millennium 40 about three years ago. It gets
(Daily) use from me.

Vicky, you may want to reply off list or give me a call. Thanks.

the ipod touch 6th gen has not been updated since late 2015. its hardware chips that is. I'll probably get the 64gig version so i have some room for a good bit of tv shows. but since I'll mostly be streaming, the big 128gig iPod touch is not a necessity. I also want it for some games android does not have.

Hey Josh. If you are a screen reader user, there is, in my opinion, no advantage to an IPad over an Ipod touch. In fact, the IPad has so much screen realistate that it makes using it with voice over annoying.

Hi,

I buy a lot of shows off iTunes and also movies because I have as you may or may not know, an apple tv 4th generation tv box. My questions is this. What screen reader works best with iTunes, jaws or NVDA? And when in iTunes, how do I quickly get to my purchased tv shows only, and not every single tv show? And how do I move by seasons and so on? I was thinking of buying an iPod touch, 6th gen, I think is the latest to more easily watch and stream my purchased shows on the go when wifi is available. But I hear lots of people use iPads. In schools and stuff like that iPads are used. So are iPads better than iPod touches? It seems like they have similar apple processors in them and such. I really like my android devices. But apple has some stuff that google android does not, and vice-versa. So perhaps it is best to have one or two of each? Also for watching my favorite classic nickelodeon shows from the 1990s at night, an iPod touch is more portable than a laptop. Plus I am interested in checking out the blindfold games, and I do not think they will come to android anytime soon. I’ll probably get either a 32gig or 64gig iPod touch. When available, I would rather stream my shows than download them.

Josh

Hello List.  I have both a Packmate 20 and a Millennium 20 from Freedom Scientific that in each case need several hundred dollars’ worth of repair.

What I am wondering from you, is what would you do with them?

Would you repair and try to sell them or just give them away as is?

Thank you for your recommendations!

Re: Amazon Echo Show And Loss Of Blue Tooth Connectivity

Ron Canazzi

Hi Group,

After consulting with Chris G. from Mystic Access, I found the solution to my problem.  People would do well to save this for future reference--particularly if you are using an Echo device and do not have a smart phone.

With the echo Show, you can do most things on the web interface, but one thing you cannot do is to search for a paring Blue Tooth device.  You must either use the smart phone app or the device itself.  Using the device itself involves using touch gestures for the screen.  You can start by asking Alexa to go to settings. Once there you use the touch gesture: one finger to highlight the blue tooth  item then double tap  and then once it is exposed, highlight the name of the device you need to pair and double tap to complete the paring.  I am very clumsy with touch gestures, but once explained, it only took a few minutes for me to pair the proper device.

I was on the phone with Amazon support for over an hour and they have no clue.  The Victor Reader and the Evantech still work together perfectly.

If anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate them.

Solution, was "Is there a way to easily skip an ad on Youtube?"

-

It is better in the first place not to have the ads on youtube, or anywhere else for that matter. Here is the way to avoid them.

Computers rely on what is called the hosts file when making internet connections.

That text file contains the ip addresses of sources on the net. If an ip appears in hosts the computer ignores it. This can be the ip of an
ad or others not wanted.

Here is windows specific info and a hosts file to install instad of the default. It is updated from time to time so doing a fresh install
will catch ip sources with ads and other things to be avoided.

I use a mac, folllowing the windows link is a link to info specific to the mac and linux/unix machines. It uses the same hosts file as does
windows but it is kept in a different place in the operating system

Since using this method for a few years; I have never had a youtube or anyother ad.
