Solved: Moving Bookmarks in Firefox

Steve Matzura

I reported earlier today that I had an "Other bookmarks" folder that somehow had gotten my last twenty bookmarks added to it when I really wanted them in the main bookmarks folder. Here's how to fix that accessibly.

1. Open Firefox.

2. Open the Library page with Control plus Shift plus B. Although it contains bookmarks, among other things, this is not the same as the Alt plus B Bookmarks menu.

3. Press TAB twice to get to the Library  tree view. This includes things like downloads, history, and bookmarks. Since Bookmarks is the last Level 1 branch, the best thing to do is press the End key to get to the end of the list of bookmark folders, all of which are Level 2 branches off the "Bookmarks menu" brandh.

4. Move up the list with the up-arrow key until you find a folder with bookmarks in it that you want to move elsewhere, and press TAB.

5. Select the bookmark(s) you want to move in the usual manner, either by holding down the Shift key and pressing down-arrow, or by holding down the Control key, pressing down-arrow, and then pressing space bar for each bookmark you want to select for the move operation.

6. Press Control plus X to cut the selected bookmarks to the Windows clipboard.

7. Press Shift plus TAB to move back to the Library folders tree view.

8. Find the folder into which you want to paste the previously selected and cut bookmarks. If you want them to appear in the main bookmarks folder, select the item in the library list called "Bookmarks menu," level 1 in the tree view. Note that you do not need to open this or any other branch of the Library/Bookmarks tree view in order to paste something into it.

9. Press Control plus V to paste thecontents of the Windows Clipboard which, unless you've changed it, contains the bookmarks selected and cut in steps 5 and 6 above.

10. Close the Library tree view by pressing Alt plus F4.

The bookmarks which you pasted are now at the end of the master bookmarks list.

Now that you've added some misplaced bookmarks to the end of what may have previously been a nicely sorted list, you can sort the list by opening the Library tree view with Control plus Shift plus B, pressing TAB, navigating to the Level 1 branch called "Bookmarks menu," pressing the Application key and selecting Sort.

Hope this helps.

Re: NVDA version that will work on windows7 PC

If your friend is reporting that he hears a long, never-ending series of short beeps after he attempts to install it this could likely be the user account control asking for permission to install the program. NVDA should be announcing the UAC prompt but there may be instances when this might not happen and so your friend should press alt-tab a few times in order to try to get the UAC prompt to gain focus. However, I would definitely check to ensure that all of the latest Windows updates are installed.

Hello list
I am not subscribed to the NVDA list so I hope someone here can help. A friend’s house was destroyed by a fire. Someone gave him a PC with windows 7 but the latest NVDA won’t install. He is now looking for an older version that wil work on the PC. I think maybe NVDA 15 or so. Does anyone perhaps have such a version which I can download via a dropbox link?

Hi. As far as I know NVDA 2018.3.2, the latest production release, should install on a Windows 7 machine. I would ensure that the machine has the latest Windows 7 service pack, which may be SP1. It's possible that earlier versions of Windows 7 may not support later versions of NVDA. What exactly happens when your friend attempts to install NVDA?

Loy,

There is a workaround for installing apps on Android devices which may benefit you. If you have a Google account, you can log into the Play store from another device, such as your PC or Mac, and have the app that you want sent to your Android device.

This method should work if your Android phone is already registered with your account.

As an example, suppose that you want to install the Google keyboard, which I believe is now called Gboard.

From your main computer, go to the Google play store and ensure that you're signed in. In the edit field, enter the app or type of app you want to install on your phone.

When you locate the correct app in the search results, there should be form controls for installing it onto one of your registered Android devices. I don't remember if this option is contained within the search results or if you first need to select the app by pressing enter on the app's link but you should see some options for installing the app. Hopefully, your Android device should show up in the list of devices for that app. This will allow you to install any app onto your device from your computer. We used to have the same capability with iOS devices but Apple recently removed that capability, for reasons known only to them. While you're at it, you may want to install Talkback in case that device is using an older version or some other funky variant.

Re: thoughts on accessibility of one password and jaws and why password managers are needed

Steve Matzura

It's accessible to a point. Version 4, the non-cloud-based version, does have some oddities about access, but on the whole it's quite usable.

Now, as to why one should use a password manager, of course one can rely on one's memory, and I'm pretty sure most people do that, but there are definitely those of us out there whose memories aren't as good as they should or ought to be, or who don't use password construction formulas, or any number of other reasons why one would want to have one's passwords recorded securely on one's computer. In other words, it doesn't make you any more efficient to use a password manager than if you don't, but many of us simply find it a convenience we enjoy. One only has to remember one password--the master password to the file that contains the rest of them.

Programs like 1Password also remember other things, like bank cards, other kinds of account information, etc., that one may not remember. Do you know the Social Security or Medicare card numbers of everyone in your family? You never know when you might need that information, and 1Password is the  perfect place to record such.

Last Pass stores your password on their servers, so all you need is your
master password.
Your file is encrypted, and if you loose your master password you are out of
luck.
Last pass does not have your password.

Hi all,

The problem with password managers is that they are housed on your computer.
If your computer dies, you're SOL. Me, I suggest low tech, old fashioned
methods of storing passwords. Pencil and paper work well. Brlr and paper,
slates & styli all work well. You could have a file and print it off.

Now, you could, God forbid, have a fire in your house which would burn up
your password file, but this is unlikely. You might put it in DropBox, but
that's not very secure. No, old fashioned low tech, methods are preferred.

Moving Bookmarks From one Folder to Another in Firefox

Steve Matzura

I thought I had lost some bookmarks. Apparently they've gone into the "Other bookmarks" folder in Firefox. I prefer to keep all my bookmarks in one folder. I tried marking all the bookmarks in the "Other" folder, cutting them, and pasting them into the main folder. This did not work. How then is this accomplished, how did I manage to get those bookmarks into "Other," and once I get them out of there, is it OK to remove this folder that I don't want or need?

As always, thanks in advance for help.

Re: thoughts on accessibility of one password and jaws and why password managers are needed

David Goldfield <david.goldfield@...>

Dennis,

This is a very important question. First, I doubt I will be of much help to you at this time as I currently don't use JAWS at home and I also have not tried using 1Password.

However, this is something I definitely want to look into for my own personal use. The last password manager I used was Lastpass. Its level of accessibility, as well as the accessibility of other password managers, may vary. This not only may depend on what screen reader you are using but on the browser you use. In the case of Lastpass, I used it with Firefox and, initially, found it to be accessible. However, at some point the extension changed and I found that its level of accessibility for altering options had declined, at least with NVDA. When I tried it using the extension for Google Chrome I found it to be far more accessible.

Password managers, on the whole, are excellent tools and should be considered. First, they often synchronize with multiple devices. This means that your passwords that you may have set up using your PC are then accessible on other PCS or even mobile devices. They can automatically generate random, strong passwords for the various accounts which you use. All you need to remember is one master password to access your password manager and the software does the rest.

If you Google something like Best Password Manager you'll surely find good, thorough reviews. I'm considering 1Password and Keeper to try them out and will eventually report back regarding my findings.

Re: 2 questions about mwb

David Goldfield <david.goldfield@...>

Hi, Kimsan.

I had a very difficult time in coming up with a simple, straight answer to this question. From what I've read, it should be possible to use your 1.75 license key to activate MWB 3.6.1, which, btw, should offer better protection. As I no longer use 1.75 I am unable to verify whether this procedure actually works. I also use NVDA and currently don't have JAWS installed on my home PC so your mileage may vary as to whether this will be a smooth process for you.

Assuming that you have your license key available, open MWB and keep tabbing until you get to the My Account button. Press space to activate this button.

Because my copy is already registered, I am given my current license number, my automatic renewal date since I have enabled autorenewal and I also see an edit field where I can enter or paste a new license key. With MWB 3, pressing the tab key navigates through all of the program's various fields, even fields containing just information without requiring any sort of interaction. Hopefully, entering your 1.75 license key into this field should activate MWB3 but, as I mentioned, am unable to verify this. Here's a forum post which discusses this.

Re: converting pdf to excel spread sheets

Jim Pursley <jim.goodgaia@...>

I can't help with the conversion, but since you are a client of this company you might ask for your report in another format.  Your plan was not likely written directly in pdf - more likely it was written in a spreadsheet and converted to pdf.

Failing that, you'd probably need to copy individual items to your spreadsheet rather than copying the entire thing.
