Re: Kurzweil 3000 Firefly-- need more info please

I'm going to a community college in Alamo Community group in San
Antonio, Texas area.
In Texas you have to take the TSI entrance exams to be placed in the
right classes. What research I did shows that it is given on a computer
and is progressive. As in the difficulty changes according to your
answers.
I tried to explain that I could just bring NVDA portable and she was
supposed to talk to the dept in charge of access--the name slips my
mind right now--to see if it were possible. I don't think she did that
because I gave her detailed information and she came back with that
program name.
Otherwise she said she would read the test to me. There are three
parts: reading, writing, and math. I do NOT want to have someone
reading me the test and writing out my responses for the essay
portion. I type 120 wpm and I don't know what my reading level is, but
as a person who is writing a lot that would drive me bonkers. I did
say I wanted help with the math portion though in case I had more
questions if there were diagrams and the like because I know I won't
get enough information from a flat screen reader interprettation.
I know what Kurzweil is which is why I had questioned her because she
said I had that as an option or to have a reader.
I'm not sure what groups to ask around here. I live north of San
Antonio and the chapters I looked up seemed to be a distance from me.
It is annoyibng enough that I will have to take an Uber/Lyft to
classes I may have on campus since the bus doesn't run to it, but it
is what it is. I'd rather cut down on how much I have to try and get
around.

Kurzweil 3000 is a program that recognizes text in written documents and
other formats such as image files, and converts it into documents a computer
can read. It will read them as well and it may be used to read document
files in general that computers generate such as txt files, doc files, etc.
But it is not a screen-reader. Also, it is a product for those with vision,
such as dyslexics. Kurzweil 1000 is the product that recognizes documents
and converts them into computer usable form that is designed for blind
people. You would need information from someone who knows the 3000 program
to know just to what extent a blind person can use the program. I doubt it
is much.

At this point, we don't know what you need, a reading program for blind
people such as Kurzweil 1000 or a screen-reader to read already existing
computer documents.

Also, I doubt that Kurzweil or any other recognition program, called an OCR,
otpical character recognition program, is considered acceptable for use in a
math exam. You need completely accurate documents so the numbers and signs
are all correct. No OCR program is 100 percent accurate. So again, where
do you live? There are laws in many countries about how such tests are to
be administered. I don't know them. It may be required that the documents
be provided to you in computer accessible form, converted or transcribed by
a person so they are accurate. Or, you may have the option, under law, to
have a sighted reader in the room to read the problems to you.

Whatever the case, you need to find and speak with someone knowledgeable
about that and whatever other matters you are dealing with. There may be
blindness advocacy organizations in your area that can help with such
matters.

If you live where good laws don't exist, you may still get good information
and advice from such organizations. The list can help by discussing matters
as well but you need someone locally too, if available.

You may need a program like Kurzweil 1000 for reading print materials used
in school but Kurzweil 3000 is not appropriate for a blind person to
use, whether it can be used to a limited or very limited extent or not.

The only information I can seem to find is on what it is--and that was
a pain in the butt itself. Talk about vague sales lines or something.

I had no idea that they made this program. I thought it was only an
OCR program. I had a heck of a time trying to make the disability
counselor for my school understand what it was I was wanting.
Apparently I'm the first blind person she's had to deal with in a
billion years in that type of position . It's rather disheartening as
a whole to even want to continue this endevor.
.
I just want the keyboard commands to use the screen reader portion.
I've no need for the low vision or other options it offers.
It's bad enough I have to take a math test--I stank at math before I
lost my sight--but having to learn a whole new screen reader is just
as annoying.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Kurzweil 3000 Firefly-- need more info please

Well, no wonder I couldn't find any information about it. I remember
hearing something about a program that incorporates low vision, no
vision, and dyslexia. But, I didn't know there were different programs
for it.
As I mentioned she says I'm the first blind person she has dealt with.
She is also very over loaded with disabled students she has to deal
with. I'm not looking forward to being a trail blazer of sorts. It is
a decent community college that looks to begood all around.
I plan on attending a satellite campus of Alamo Community College in
the San Antonio area.

I should be able to explain it to her. I had tried to explain a screen
reader to her before, but she didn't get it. I'm usually very good at
explaining tech things to people.
I will see what my next email will do--thanks.

Re: Google Home Page Question Please?

Gene

This message is long but it discusses and teaches important points about web page navigation and adapting to change.  If people want to complain to Google, that's fine.  Its not as convenient to work with the search page, but the important thing I'm discussing in this message is how to adapt to change.  Sites are always changing and many sites don't use all the adaptive measures people are accustomed to.  Ones ability to use web pages well shouldn't be left to the kindness of strangers.  Navigating without the accomodations should be taught and should be a standard part of learning Internet navigation.  It appears to me that it is not emphasized and I don't know how much or how often it is taught to any extent at all.

It appears, from a bit of experimentation I've done, that if you have JAVA scripts turned off or are using a script blocker, you won't see headings.  If JAVA scripts are allowed, you will.

Do the following:
Be sure you are at the top of the page.  Type the letter b until you get to a button that says something like search tools.  Tab to get to the result links.  Tab through them until you get to one you want to follow or explore below the link with the arrow keys for more information about the result.

Sites change all the time and also you never know when you will want to use a site that doesn't have accomodations.  You need to know how to look at sites and see what has changed so you aren't rote learning and can use pages as they change.

Its unfortunate that instructors and written materials don't emphasize these points.  This is a classic example.

When the headings disappeared, I let a results page read from the top.  When I got to the first result, I arrowed up the page to see if there is anything that looks as though it is repeated on every page.  There is.  The search tools button.

Hi Everyone,
For some unknown reason I can't seem to use the heading option when I am doing a Google search, and this has been happening for maybe a week or so.  I've restarted my PC, logged off JAWS, checked the cursor option under JAWS quick settings by pressing the insert plus v, and I do see headings is turned on to read.  Is there some other setting that I can change, and if so, can someone please tell me? When I used to do a Google search, and get the results, I normally just press the letter h to go from heading to heading to see which result I want, but now when I get the results, and press the letter h, I get a message saying no headings.  So I have to just keep pressing the down arrow, which is time consuming, not to mention annoying!  LOL!  This also happens when I've been on some other sites as well.  I've checked my home page in which is Google, but that is still the same.  Could this be just Google's site, maybe Google has changed something?
I am running Windows 7, 64bit pc.  The latest JAWS, IE 11.

Re: problem with saved bookmarks

Here's something you can try to test your bookmark,

Tap the Alt key on your keyboard to open the File dropdown menu,
Arrow over to the Favorites tab, then arrow down to Organize favorites.

There are a couple of buttons in there, but keep tabbing until you get
to the list view of your bookmarks.

Arrow down until you find a bookmark that you want to work with, then
press the application key or the Shift key plus the F10 key to open
the context menu and arrow to the selection titled properties and
press the enter key to open it.

Tab around until you get to the URL location textbox, then press the
Ctrl key plus the letter A key to highlight the URL, Press the Ctrl
key plus the letter C key to copy the URL to the clipboard.

Now tap the ESC key to close the properties window and tap the ESC key
once more to close the Favorites window.

Back at your browser, you can press the Alt key and tap the D key to
jump up to the URL location textbox then Press the Ctrl key and tap
the letter V key to paste in the URL from your clipboard.

Press the Enter key and see what happens. If you go to the desired
webpage then the URL was good, so maybe your bookmark has become
corrupted.
so while your at the correct page make another bookmark.

Then test your new bookmark and see if it works.

If the page was indeed gone or incorrect, you could find it and create
a new Favorite book mark or copy the URL and go back to your favorites
and update the URL for that bookmark manually.

If neither of these options work, post back here and let us know.

HTH,
Blaster

When people write to lists, any list, and say they haven't
received any messages from a list for a period of time when
there have been messages, why do people answer on list.
People are unlikely to receive list answers if they aren't
receiving list mail. Is it generally because they don't
know how to send a message to the person offlist? Which
leads to the perfect opportunity to suggest a discussion on
how to send mail to someone's address as an individual. How
this is done varies depending on the e-mail program being
used but it is an important thing to know for anyone who
wants to send messages off list to anyone. And again, I'm
not just talking about this list. I repeatedly and often
see people addressing people on lists, responding to
something or following up with something that would make
much more sense to discuss off list.

For example, I see someone ask someone if they are such and
such a person they used to know and the other person
answering on list. I suspect this would be done much less
if people knew how to write to people off list, using the
list message as the way to do so or get the address from.

That is in JAWS. The command you gave is a JAWS command and won't work, as
far as I know, with NVDA.

Outlook, to get the email address of the list sender:

Alt+1.

Copy that line by pressing Control+A; then Control+C.

Get out of that message. Control+N to start a new one. Paste information in
To Field; then edit everything out other than the sender's address.

Then hop to it, subject, message body and send.

Best regards,

Carolyn

I don't use Outlook. I use Windows Live Mail and I can discuss that if
people wish.

When people write to lists, any list, and say they haven't received any
messages from a list for a period of time when there have been messages, why
do people answer on list.
People are unlikely to receive list answers if they aren't receiving list
mail. Is it generally because they don't know how to send a message to the
person offlist? Which leads to the perfect opportunity to suggest a
discussion on how to send mail to someone's address as an individual. How
this is done varies depending on the e-mail program being used but it is an
important thing to know for anyone who wants to send messages off list to
anyone. And again, I'm not just talking about this list. I repeatedly and
often see people addressing people on lists, responding to something or
following up with something that would make much more sense to discuss off
list.

For example, I see someone ask someone if they are such and such a person
they used to know and the other person answering on list. I suspect this
would be done much less if people knew how to write to people off list,
using the list message as the way to do so or get the address from.

putting gmail into windows live mail

Pamela Dominguez

I have the account I set up for a friend so I can download books for her from BARD.  Somebody told me how to put it into windows live mail, a long time ago, but I forgot.  That was on my old computer that is now history.  I tried it yesterday, and I seemed to be getting asked different questions than I am today, when I tried it again.  So, help, please!  Thanks.  Pam.
