The web interface is very inefficient to work with with screen-readers and I'm not sure it is fully accessible.

I’m not a Dropbox user, but in general, if the desktop client for whatever reason isn't accessible, isn't there  always the web interface you can try accessing your files with? Not ideal depending on how it's laid out, but that should be an option to at least have access to whatever it is you need.
If Dropbox does in fact not offer access in this manner though, then at that point, I'd consider choosing another sync method. I'm a Google Drive and One Drive user for personal and business use as they offer more storage for cheaper prices and so far at least, everything's been nice and accessible. Be it on my PCs and iOS devices.
Good luck.

Re: extremely upset

If so, that will save people a lot of trouble.  But do you have the new desktop application, displaying inaccessibly when you work directly in the application?

Re: extremely upset

But I think it this case, it occurred with a full six monthly upgrade, which I think is too often.  Microsoft either can't or won't test them adequately and they have been criticized a good deal for there six month updates over about the last year and a half.  This is the kind of problem I wouldn't expect from monthly security and stability updates, though its possible.

But even if this is not a bug, but just something that might go wrong with a full upgrade, users shouldn't be exposed to the risk of random events every six months, even if low.  Users aren't clamoring for six month full upgrades of Windows.  In my opinion, annual upgrades are more than enough.

And that is why I won't upgrade a perfectly well working machine that I am satisfied with that is using a lower version of Windows.  If I want Windows 10, I'll buy a new machine.  That way, I'll have the other one available if Microsoft does something that really causes problems.

Which makes it more annoying for the end user since windows updates occur on average about once a month.  The cycle of security and bug fixes never seem to end, to the point of being ridiculous, and it becomes especially upsetting when it affects software that you need for your daily job routines.

This problem has nothing to do with JAWS.?? The June Security Update to Windows 10 1809 broke the start menu search box, plain and simple.?? How do I know??? Because my techie friend accessed my computer remotely using Team Viewer and confirmed that there were no search results when I typed a search phrase into the search box. And I don't get any search results if I use Narrator or NVDA, either.

well I like using decTalk with NVDA, and also playing around with the decTalk speaking notePad applications, even though the graphics are not labeled. DecTalk 4.3 is my favorite decTalk demo app. Oh and I also have text-assist running inside of windows 3.1. But it sounds just like decTalk, and there really is no difference.

Interesting though. I updated both my desktop computers, as well as my laptop, plus a host of client computers, and have not had an issue with the start menu search field.

Hi Jerald. Unfortunately, this is not an accessibility issue then. JAWS would read the results of the search box, if there were something there to read. This is a Windows issue. Best wishes on getting it resolved. I am sure it is frustrating.

I would think the easiest way to see if JAWS might be the problem is to try Narrator.  You could also try NVDA.

How do I unlock a Cricket GSM iphone?

Peter Spitz

I have an iPhone SE on the Cricket network that I would like to unlock
and sell. Could someone tell me how to get it unlocked? Do I need to
go to the Cricket store? I am also thinking of switching to Consumer
Cellular, can they do the unlocking instead?

Thanks in advance,

Peter

Re: extremely upset

Gene

Here is more information and a question.

When you were automatically updated to the latest DropBox version, was the new inaccessible interface used automatically or did you get a message, even an inaccessible message where you could see a yes and no option?

Also, according to DropBox, you can set your preferences so DropBox will open using the old display.  Can you get to preferences and work with them from the system tray as you could in earlier versions?  If so, that may well solve your problem.

Different people receive new updates at different times and if you had this problem, with no accept the new interface or don't accept option, then all blind Windows application DropBox users will have this problem sooner or later so if we can determine how to set DropBox back to the old display, that will be very helpful to you and all blind Windows DropBox application users.

As I said earlier, however, none of this absolves DropBox from having blind people test the development of a new version as sighted people do and none of this absolves DropBox from having blind people, knowledgeable in accessibility, consult with developers from the outset, building accessibility in before, not months after release.

I have a possible suggestion that might help but in a somewhat inconvenient manner.

It may be, in fact it very likely is, that you can still sign in with an old version of DropBox.  Certainly, there are a lot of users who don't have the new interface yet and there may be nothing conflicting with the previous version.  so, if you can get the previous version, you may be able to uninstall the current version, install the previous version, connect to DropBox and do what needs to be done.

I played around with this years ago when there was some other accessibility problem, though nothing like this, and, as I recall, I could stop the program from automatically updating by uploading a long file, which allowed me to do what I wanted to do while it was uploading.  But don't let the program sit idle.  It will upgrade and you'll have to go through all this again.

On a broader note, its far past time that Dropbox stop releasing updates without first testing them with blind users, just as they test updates with sighted users.  I suggest that you contact organizations who might put pressure on DropBox such as the National Federation of the Blind, the American Council of the Blind, and since this is an international problem, any organizations that might be appropriate in other countries.  and this is not a problem of DropBox alone, but is common.  Companies at times correct problems once they are pointed out, after months of inconvenience or worse imposed on blind users.
