You may not need sighted assistance.  I doubt that changing the interface changes anything in the system tray.

The system tray dialog may not work efficiently with NVDA since the update.  But you can get to the menu people are used to working with in the following way:
Move to the system tray with Windows key b.
Find the DropBox icon.
Once there, press enter.
The context menu will open.
Find properties and press enter.
Try tabbing around.  Do you see anything about using the old interface?  Since there is a button about trying the new interface if you haven't switched, there is likely something about using the original or old or however they word it interface.

I haven't played with this because I don't want to change the interface as an experiment.  Also, I find the user error hypothesis to be unlikely.  That would imply that you changed the setting to cause the new interface to be displayed.  Since doing so requires an active change, going to the system tray and changing the setting, the program may have changed the settings on its own.  It may be that this shouldn't happen, but unless you are a sleepwalker and use computers in your sleep, user error, though possible, can't be assumed.

I believe I have the latest version of the program.  When it updated, nothing changed in my settings so your experience may be an anomaly.

Hi all,

There are two things going on here, if you'll pardon me.  First,
ignorance is not something which is funny.  It is something which needs
to be remedied. It's not funny to discover that you have seemingly lost
all your data, data which is part of your livelihood.

Second, the new interface for Dropbox is in accessible to me.  I have
tried to make the buttons activate and they do not.  I have attempted
to figure out how the new interface works so that I can access my files
from the desktop instead of going through Windows Explorer.  It is
important that this new interface work for users who are blind or
visually impaired, and as far as I can see, it does not do so.

User error it may be, but it is the user who operates the computer.  I
would ask you to reexamine your cavalier  attitude and change it to
something more tolerant and helpful.  As a teacher both of braille and
computer technology, I find amusement at the expense of another crass
and socially unacceptable.  Now I've been known to grumble about
questions asked which I think are obvious, but I never laugh at those
who ask these questions.  The only dumb question is the one which isn't
asked.  As an asside, have you ever really examined the saying in the
sentence before this one?  Dumb has two meanings which I never tumbled
to until recently.  Dumb can mean stupid, but it can also mean silent,
as in unable to speak.   If you think about that, the saying has a
layered meaning.  It's actually a play on words.

No matter how much I may grumble about folks who ask simple questions,
and sometimes I can be a bit sharp tongued, it is exasperation at the
training folks have been given that irks me.

I will get some sighted assistance and I will probably be able to
configure DropBox so that it will come up in a list view the way it
used to do.  In the meantime, I will access my files via Windows
Explorer.  They have not been lost to me.  Life will continue.
However, I will remember that feeling of fear and utter helplessness so
that when somebody else experiences it I can be helpful instead of amused.

ccleaner accessibility

David Mehler

Hello,

Trying to use ccleaner it's v5.60 I believe and IMO accessibility has
really gone downhill. How are people using it to clean their machines?
I am wanting to individually select items in the list of items to be
cleaned, but there is no indication of whether they're selected or
not.

Suggestions welcome.
Thanks.
Dave.

Chromebook question

Angelo Sonnesso

Is there to display a PowerPoint document on a Chromebook?

internet storage

Monte Single

I currently have a paid sendspace account.

Are there cheaper alternatives for storage and sharing of files.  If I cannot share files from the account as I can do with sendspace, I am not interested in the service.

Currently it is almost 100 u s dollars a year for the paid s s account.  I would like to find something less expensive but accessible.

I would not need more than 100 gig of storage?

Suggestions?

Thanks,

Monte

I emailed fonixTalk or whatever they are called now about using decTalk. would you believe they want a starting price of $9000.00 united states dollars for the old decTalk developer kit, sdk? I told them no, I'll just use the free decTalk stuff that is currently available around the internet for free. It's that old I don't think they really care because people for the most part have moved onto eloquence or Nuance vocalizer voices anyway. Is there anyone on here who still uses infovox230? the old from from telia promotor back in the late 1990s early 2000s?

I also updated to the latest windows10 and I have no issues with the start menu search box. It is working fine. Of course I did put windows on a flash drive and did a clean install of windows 10 32bit on my RCA cambio tablet.

I switched to google drive and deleted my dropbox account and have not looked back. Google drive gives me more storage for less money and it is very accessible. I use google drive, and google drive only.

Hi Ann,

Earlier in this thread, I asked what version of Drop Box you are using.  I am using 76.4.126. I always let my Drop Box update automatically.  Is this the latest version?  If so, I am not having any interface issues.  When I open the context menu or double left click on it.  All the buttons/edit fields are accessible.

Re: extremely upset

Gene and Ann,
Gene asked:
When you were automatically updated to the latest DropBox version, was the new inaccessible interface used automatically or did you get a message, even an inaccessible message where you could see a yes and no option?
Well, as far as I know, my Dropbox is 100% up to date and so far I haven't gotten any question on this. And my Dropbox is still fully accessible *knocking on wood*.

Gene wrote:
Also, according to DropBox, you can set your preferences so DropBox will open using the old display. Can you get to preferences and work with them from the system tray as you could in earlier versions? If so, that may well solve your problem.
It makes me wonder if my dropbox is indeed up to date. Because I don't see this option of old display and such.
However, going to Preferences, I can see a button labeled "try the new Dropbox for Desktop" or something like that.
Needless to say that I haven't clicked on this since who knows what kind of problems this could give me :)

I know it doesn't help much, but this is just my two cents on the matter.

Yeah, I’ve never used the Dropbox application on my Windows 7 laptop.
I just go to the Dropbox folder in the Documents folder and add or delete files from the Shared folders I have in there.

Hi Gene,

At this point, I don't care. I'll get help to fix the dingdong dropbox. I thought I had lost access to my files. I'm just glad I can access them!

Ann P.

Original message:

But will that help? Since you are working with the folder on the hard drive using Windows Explorer, if you open the context menu, will you see any of the options you see when in the actual DropBox interface such as copy link?

Anne. Go to your c:\user\name,, Anne or Parsons if you name your pc
thus, and navigate to your dropbox folder. Your files should all be
there. Cheers!

Hi all,

No, I didn't get any question, or if I did I didn't notice it.

I'll play around with it some more and see what I can do.

Original message:

Here is more information and a question.
When you were automatically updated to the latest DropBox version, was the new inaccessible interface used automatically or did you get a message, even an inaccessible message where you could see a yes and no option?
Also, according to DropBox, you can set your preferences so DropBox will open using the old display. Can you get to preferences and work with them from the system tray as you could in earlier versions? If so, that may well solve your problem.
Different people receive new updates at different times and if you had this problem, with no accept the new interface or don't accept option, then all blind Windows application DropBox users will have this problem sooner or later so if we can determine how to set DropBox back to the old display, that will be very helpful to you and all blind Windows DropBox application users.
As I said earlier, however, none of this absolves DropBox from having blind people test the development of a new version as sighted people do and none of this absolves DropBox from having blind people, knowledgeable in accessibility, consult with developers from the outset, building accessibility in before, not months after release.

I have a possible suggestion that might help but in a somewhat inconvenient manner.
It may be, in fact it very likely is, that you can still sign in with an old version of DropBox. Certainly, there are a lot of users who don't have the new interface yet and there may be nothing conflicting with the previous version. so, if you can get the previous version, you may be able to uninstall the current version, install the previous version, connect to DropBox and do what needs to be done.
I played around with this years ago when there was some other accessibility problem, though nothing like this, and, as I recall, I could stop the program from automatically updating by uploading a long file, which allowed me to do what I wanted to do while it was uploading. But don't let the program sit idle. It will upgrade and you'll have to go through all this again.
On a broader note, its far past time that Dropbox stop releasing updates without first testing them with blind users, just as they test updates with sighted users. I suggest that you contact organizations who might put pressure on DropBox such as the National Federation of the Blind, the American Council of the Blind, and since this is an international problem, any organizations that might be appropriate in other countries. and this is not a problem of DropBox alone, but is common. Companies at times correct problems once they are pointed out, after months of inconvenience or worse imposed on blind users.

Olusegun -- Victory Associates LTD, Inc.

Consumer Cellular and Cricket are MVNO's of AT&T! I don't believe any
unlocking needs to be done in that regard since it's practically the same
network.

That said, if you purchased your toy outright, you ought to be able to GET
AN UNLOCK CODE from Cricket.

Well, my techie friend spent two hours trying to restore the start menu search box using all kinds of advanced techie tricks well beyond my scope of expertise, some of which weren't even screen reader accessible, but in the end, nothing worked.?? Soe I said, screw this, and wound up installing Classic Shell, and now I have a working search box again. But he did manage to fix an annoying problem that cropped up after the update that other Windows 10 users have reported.?? Normally, the Windows Defender system tray icon reports, "no actions needed".?? But after the update, it changed to?? "recommended actions", even though Defender reported no threats detected.?? He found some obscure setting in Windows Defender that had been altered by the update, fixed it, and now the icon has been restored to the normal "no actions needed". So you never know what a Windows update will break.

Interesting though. I updated both my desktop computers, as well as my laptop, plus a host of client computers, and have not had an issue with the start menu search field.

This problem has nothing to do with JAWS.?? The June Security Update to Windows 10 1809 broke the start menu search box, plain and simple.?? How do I know??? Because my techie friend accessed my computer remotely using Team Viewer and confirmed that there were no search results when I typed a search phrase into the search box. And I don't get any search results if I use Narrator or NVDA, either.

Hi Jerald. I have seen the Windows 10 and search issue before, and actually, it may be due to JAWS. In some cases, we have had to uninstall JAWS and reinstall it, in order to correct the search box issue. This happens particularly on systems where Windows 7 was updated to Windows 10.
You may consider this as an option. Perhaps, a repair of JAWS would fix it as well.

Ann, nobody gives a flying bleep about blind computer users. Sorry to hear that Drop Box screwed you over.?? Last week Windows Update screwed me over by breaking the search box on my Windows 10 start menu.?? Does MS care??? Of course not.?? That's just the way it is, and there is nothing anyone can do about it. My techie friend is visiting me today to try to fix it, but if he can't, screw MS. I'll just install Classic Shell or some other third-party program to restore a working search box.?? MS management is so incompetent and arrogant that they release updates before they have been thoroughly tested for bugs.?? Windows 10 Feature Update 1903 is such a mess that MS is now preventing some computers from installing it to avoid potential problems.
