searching and the vlc player

Joe Giovanelli

Hello, List,

I use Windows 7 and my screen reader is System Access.

I have a large list of music folders, each one containing various tracks. I want to search for a specific folder, and when I locate it, want to right click on it to get to the context menu. I'd move down to Play with the VLC player.

There's no problem finding the folder, but the context menu is not what it should show. The player is not shown. What I would expect is that the up or down-arrows would permit moving among the folders. The arrows do nothing. I can enter the folder and see the tracks. The arrows permit moving among them.

If I back out to the folder, the arrows remain frozen.

I try using the standard Windows search. As said, it does not yield the right results.

Is there another way to do searches?

Is there anything I can do to permit the player to work as it should?

I will very much appreciate any help you may have.

Joe Giovanelli, W2PVY

I should add that only one option works, depending on the placement and design of the split button.

There are three possible ways to open split buttons.  Right arrow, down arrow, or alt down arrow.
If you use space bar on a split button, the default action will be carried out.  Opening a split button shows you more options.  As I recall, you use enter on them as though you were in a menu.

Anyone who use the check spelling functionality of office 2019? When i use this, and press tab to any of its suggestion, Jaws sometimes announce slipt button, but I don't know how to open the split button to see all of the suggestion from there. If I press spacebar, word acept the default suggestion from that button. I don't know if is that a split button, or Jaws recognizes the wrong control type. If it is a split buttn, please show me how to activate that button to see the suggestion from there.
I can use office 2019 with both Jaws and NVDA. any help would be appreciated.

No attribution.  That is a part of my ribbons tutorial.  Since split buttons are usually found in ribbons, I explained them.

The first sentence has no relevance to the subject of split buttons.  I was saying that I don't know how Windows 10 has changed in terms of its organization compared with earlier versions of Windows.  I then said that the description of ribbons, should allow you to look through ribbons in Windows 10 as well as elsewhere.

The structure of ribbons in terms of the interface, shouldn't change just as menus are menus.

Hi Cuong,

See if this helps:
I don't know how the organization of Windows has changed in Windows 10 but this description should allow you to look through the Windows ribbons, or any other ribbons, and see how things are organized.

First, I'll discuss a structure found in later versions of Windows that you need to know about-- the split button.
One thing you will see as you look around ribbons and in other places in Windows are split buttons. A split button often allows you to see more options than just the default action.  Let's take an example.
Let's say you come across a split button that says shut down Windows.  If you press enter on that button, Windows will shut down.  That is the default action.  Split buttons often show more options if you either right arrow while on the button or down arrow.  As an example, if you are on the shut down split button, you can right arrow and a list of options will open.  the items in the list include sleep, hibernate, restart, and others.  You up or down arrow through the list or use the short cut commands you hear announced as you move through the list.  the letter shortcuts often take actions without pressing enter so be careful when using them, just as you are in menus.

So, let's review.  You find a split button that says shut down.  If you press enter, the computer will shut down. If you right arrow, other options may be displayed.  Or if you down arrow, other options may be displayed.  A split button won't work with both methods.  One method, either right arrowing or down arrowing will do so if it can be done with the button.  Try both methods if you don't know which one might work.  If you are on a tool bar which extends across the screen from left to right, down arrowing will open additional options.  If you think about this, it makes sense.  If you are in a menu, down arrowing will move you to the next item in the menu.  So you right arrow on the split button to cause it to display more options.  In a tool bar that extends across the screen from left to right, right arrowing will move you to the next item in the tool bar.  So you down arrow when on the split button to cause it to display more options.  But some tool bars run up and down the screen, as menus do.  And at times, you may not be sure which way a structure extends on screen.  So, as I said, if you are not sure or don't know, try both methods of causing the split button to display more options.  Often, one of them will work. If you open the options a split button offers and don't want to work with them, arrow in the opposite direction to move out of them.  For example, if you right arrowed to open more options, left arrow.
Some split buttons don't do anything when you right arrow or down arrow.  In that case, open them with alt down arrow.  Then tab through the additional options.  I've almost never worked in this way with split buttons but if you want to close a split button, try alt up arrow if you've used alt down arrow to open it.

Take care.  Mike.  Sent from my iBarstool.  Go dodgers!

Hi,

You would access the options in the split button by pressing the right arrow key.

This is how the save button works in Internet Explorer when you are asked to either Open or Save.

The save button is split.

Hope this helps,

Chris

Changing the time will not fix anything, especially if it's been hours since I was last at the machine's console. Whatever's doing this, it comes and goes, is most annoying, and I'm just going to have to live with it unless or until somebody at a higher level of understanding than mine figures it out and fixes it.

Hi Group:

I have a question about WiFi and Alexa. I had to change wireless
routers because mine didn't have a good connection so I had a new one
installed tonight and currently, my echo isn't working. I tried to fix
it on my own but I couldn't. It kept telling me to look for the orange
light and I'm total so couldn't see it. Could someone please give me
simple but detailed directions on how to change my WiFi so it can be
back on line? I have the same password but a different router and have
no idea how to get this corrected. Any help on this would be greatly

simpler, I would gladly do it since I was having problems using the app
and I don't type very well on the keyboard. Thank you in advance.

Hi Carrie,

Thank you so much for including the BlindAds group!

In your description of the blindAds group you say the following,

BlindAds
BlindAds+subscribe@groups.io
For buying and selling of things primarily blindness related or bought
and sold by blind people

It should say the following instead,

For buying, selling, or trading amongst its blind/VI group members.

There is no qualification that it has to be primarily blindness
related or a blindness product.

Again, thank you very much!

Hey Laz,
Could you subscribe me to that list? When I try, I receive nothing back

Laz

This sort of message should be sent to the group owner address as
indicated many times on the Blind-BST/BlindAds group by its owner. So
anyone having trouble subscribing should contact
BlindAds+owner@groups.io

Re: Notifications Window Really Getting Annoying

Mike B <mb69mach1@...>

Hi Steve,

Only to confirm or deny it's an Action Center notification.  Have you tried using the touch cursor in the Action Center?  Have you tried changing the time so maybe this notification will display longer?

Take care.  Mike.  Sent from my iBarstool.  Go dodgers!
I believe that everything happens for a reason. Usually, the reason is that somebody screwed up.

Why would I want to turn that off? If I did that, I'd lose a lot of important real notifications that show up in there. And I still say this other notification window is not related to the Actions Center.

Hi Steve,

If you install Winaero Tweaker it has an option to turn the Action Center off in the, Desktop and Taskbar, category, it's #8.

With winaero tweaker, scroll down through the catigories and find what you want, its really descriptive.

If you are still not sure there is a button to go to the page on winaero and it explains what the tweak does.

The tweaks can be toggled on and off.

There are actually keys to restore things back to where they are so you can toggle things on and off, there are enable and disable buttons.

Take care.  Mike.
