Audio description on cable tv through RCN?

jan howells <gale7978@...>

Hello,

Does anyone on the list have RCN cable tv? Our apartment complex has a contract with RCN, so I cannot have Spectrum. Someone informed me that RCN has the means to provide something for audio description. They are telling me that there is no such thing. They say that it has to be on the tv itself. They said that it is in the closed caption menu. They said that there is an option for second audio and audio description would be in there. Is this true? My caregivers are not tech savvy. They are very poor, and they are from another country. How do I explain to RCN what I am in need of? I had them note my account to give permission for someone else to speak to them concerning my account. Thank you.

I imagine it'll still be usable even though there'll; no more updates.

I was told that my iPhone 6S will not be able to receive any updates
after the 13.1 update that is scheduled for this month. Does anyone
know if this is true? Also, pardon my ignorance but will the phone
still be useable once they stop supporting it? I literally bought it
new from Consumer Cellular less than two weeks ago and was hoping it
would last me a couple years. I don't use the phone often, mainly for
text messages and the occasional voice call. Thanks for any info in
advance!

Thanks for that explanation! I feel better now.

Most likely, you may find that certain apps once iOS 14 come out may start
giving you problems or run slower or simply not have all the features
available than newer versions, but as far as the phone not working? Not
true.

Re: chrome question

chris judge

Are you using windows 10 or 7. If using windows 7, Monte's instructions are correct. If using windows 10 you have to set chrome to be your default browser by going to settings, default apps, and setting it that way.

Hi group:

I am so sorry to ask this question again but I accidentally deleted the email someone sent a few months ago about how to make chrome your default browser. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could send the directions again. The only thing I can remember is hitting alt F and then I forgot what comes next. I'm using Chrome and Fire Fox but want to make chrome my default browser because I have noticed that fire fox is slow with Jaws. I like both browsers because one does one thing great and vise versa but would rather have chrome as default browser. Thanks in advance and again, I apologize.

Yes, Alt f will open the menu.
Arrow up till you hear settings,
Press enter on settings andtab a lot of time till you hear "make default".
Press enter and tab til you hear ok.
Press enter, you are done.

closing windows 10 email

Patrick Ford

Hi,

When I close the windows 10 program on my laptop, using NVDA, I can still hear notifications on incoming email. This is bothersome du to the fact that I use my laptop for music and it is bluetoothed over to my surround  sound system. So, I definitely do not need these announcements  while playing files.

Does anyone know how to stop this?

Thanks.

Patrick

windows 10 mail question

Patrick Ford

Hi,

Using Windows 10 mail, does anyone know how to create an email signature? After clicking the signature button I have problems  trying to choose font color which stays at red in the combo box because the combo box does not seem to open, and also I don’t find the area where to actually create the text to use as the signature.

I am using the latest in NVDA, with, of course, windows  10 on a laptop.

Thanks.

Patrick

Hi another question on Libre Office,

I notice that while using the Libre Office Writer or the excel equivalent a lot of the Jaws scripts do not work as usual..? Is there a jaws script that I can get for Libre Office that will allow it to perform better with Jaws? If so, where would I get said scripts? Thanks! de

Hi Sugar,

LibreOffice comes with:

Writer (Word processor - like Microsoft Word)

Calc (Spreadsheet program - like Excel)

Impress (Presentations - like PowerPoint)

Draw (Drawings)

Math formula

Base (Database - like Access)

It doesn't have an email client.  If you are looking at a laptop with Windows 10, your dad might try Windows mail (built into Windows 10), or Thunderbird.  On earlier versions of Windows, Thunderbird, or Windows Live Mail might be options.

Using email via webmail may also be an option - all that is needed for that is the web browser (whichever one your dad uses).  For a sighted mouse user, web mail works pretty much the same as a full client, for an NVDA user, it's possible to use it, although I prefer using a client.

Regards

Quentin.
