I can attest from personal experience that Computers for the Blind stands behind the refurbished desktops and laptops they sell.  I purchased a Windows 10 desktop from them in May, and I had to return it to them two months later for repair because the hard drive died unexpectedly.  They replaced it and returned it to me at no cost, although it took a few weeks.  I am currently using the Windows 7 desktop I purchased from them three years ago, and it has worked flawlessly.  I was able to install JAWS 2019 on this Windows 7 machine using the one-year license that came withthe the Windows 10 machine.  A one-year JAWS license can be used on up to three computers.  You can now purchase your computer directly over the phone and pay by credit or debit card.  A complete Windows 10 Pro desktop system, with a one year license for JAWS 2020, 4 gb of RAM and 160 gb hard drive, keyboard, mouse and 19 inch flat panel monitor  costs $140.  You can upgrade with additional RAM and larger hard drive at extra cost.  The JAWS license alone would cost $90.  For more info:

I suggest you try figuring out what you need in a laptop; once you have this
down as best you can, searching things out might be a tad easier.

Personally, I never buy brand-new laptops anymore. I always look for
refurbished ones at giveaway prices. Example: Nearly 10 years ago, I
grabbed a Sony Vaio. Before I did, I always walked away from Sony toys
cause they're pricey. However, I grabbed what I currently have for $359
refurbished; original price was $899.95! It runs Windows7 64Bit
Professional and will still receive a Windows upgrade if I so choose. I
leave this toy on 24 hours a day, only turning it off when I am leaving town
for an extended period of time. It has never given me grief, its battery is
removable and replaceable solely by me. And, yes, I am hopping off to
Batteries Plus to grab a new battery for this toy, the first since I bought
it. But, Sony no longer manufacture computers of any kind anymore, mobile
technology has cut too deep into that space.

Today, most laptop batteries, even though they may be removable, are not
easy to get to without messing with a few screws. This is good for a
naughty child like me whose fingers never stop or quit tinkering!!

It's easy for me to determine what configurations I hold so dear; then I
frequent computer stores and spend considerable time playing with whatever
they have on display before finally zeroing in on one. I generally buy from
Microcenter; they like to sell me a two-year or three-year warranty, but I
don't ever want one!

For now, please consider taking a good look at amazon.com/ It always seems
to have good price points for everyone.

Re: New Laptop

Hi Amy,

I recently bought an Acer 15.6 inch 4 pound laptop from Amazon.  It is very slim and really feels comfortable to hold in my hands.  It is extremely fast and it has a number pad.  I like it better than any laptop that I have ever owned.  This is my fifth laptop in about 4 years.  Its battery life for me is over 11 hours.  Note, I have my screen resolution turned down pretty low because I do not need to see the screen.  It does not have a DVD reader/burner.  It also does not have an SD card reader.  I have an external DVD reader/burner and an external SSD card reader.  I haven’t needed either in over 2 years.

Maybe there will be some sale  prices next week.  I can’t say for sure.  For right now, the price is $509, plus state sales tax with free delivery.

Here are a few details along with an Amazon  link.

Re: New Laptop

I haven’t priced laptops for a long time, but I doubt you need to spend more than 500 dollars, maybe less, especially if you find a good sale.  This is just a very rough guessand my 500 dollar limit may be too high.

Depending on how much you want to spend, you may want to contact Computers for the Blind, which other list members can tell you more about.  I think you can get a refurbished laptop from them for something like 150 dollars.  It will have more than enough power to meet the needs you describe.  But whether you can specify such things as a numpad and what kind of battery life you can expect are things I don’t know.

Hi Vicki, find a video that you want to get notifications from from one of your channels, click on it should say something like actions button or something like that. And then select all modifications. You have to do it while the video was playing otherwise it will move to the next channel or another video that is somewhere like it in some cases.

Re: Trouble finding specific products online

Hi,

Consider leaving out the model number. Then you can browse what comes up.
How many models of the waterpik can there be.

Another method is to just type in the brand name and model in the Google
search field. For example:
WaterPik model xxxxxxx at Walmart

In addition, Walmart's web site isn't as user friendly as Amazon's. At
least for me. Plus, Walmart is the worlds worst about tinkering with their
web site.

Is shopping at Amazon an option? Amazon almost always has more products and
usually with lower prices.

Hi,

It seems that when I'm looking for a product on a store's website with its
specific info like model with its numbers associated with it, I don't
always see it. Recently I got a recommendation for a waterpik plus
toothbrush from Wal-mart online. So I went to Walmart to locate it. So far
I haven't seen it there. Anybody have a suggestion as to why this can
happen, that the info doesn't appear at the top of the search results? Is
it possible that on the very same day I got the tip, it wasn't there
anymore?

I suggest searching for specific products on Amazon.  There is almost nothing they don't sell.  They have by far the largest inventory of products of any online merchant, including WalMart, and their prices are usually lower, too.  Visit Amazon.com and type the model of the Water Pik electric toothbrush you are interested in into the search box on the home page.  If it is a current model, you will probably get ahit.

Hi Ron,

See if this little snip it from a search helps:

Open the settings by swiping down from the top of the screen, and then tapping the little gear icon. On the Echo Show, there's a “Settings” label underneath the icon. From there, select “Home & Clock” option (Echo Dot) “Home Screen” option (Echo Show). Toggle the “24-Hour Time” switch to enable it.

Also, the way files and folders are displayed isn't basically changed.  It is changed to be exactly as it was before.  The program is actually doing exactly what it was before, using Windows Explorer or File Explorer to display files and folders.

I have activated the button in the new Dropbox that changes the view to
Windows Explorer, basically, as it was before the change. Unfortunately,
it always defaults back to the new view, which I do not like at all.  Is
there a way to permanently change to the Windows Explorer view?

Re: youTube channel notifications

Hi Vicki, find a video that you want to get notifications from from one of your channels, click on it should say something like actions button or something like that. And then select all modifications. You have to do it while the video was playing otherwise it will move to the next channel or another video that is somewhere like it in some cases.

How will I know when this upgrade happens on my machine? It hasn't so far but I have some friends that it has happened to and one of them has given me an instructions file to fix it.

Actually you can directly access your dropbox folders now via the desktop dropbox icon.   it used to be, not so long ago, that you had to access them through the system tray icon with the Right Menu context key.  Cheers!

You aren't using the right setting.  The button, which I assume you are tabbing to, is a setting for just that one session.  The permanent change is found in properties for Dropbox in the system tray.  If you don't know how to find it there or have problems, ask here.

Also, the way files and folders are displayed isn't basically changed.  It is changed to be exactly as it was before.  The program is actually doing exactly what it was before, using Windows Explorer or File Explorer to display files and folders.

I said incorrectly, in my first sentence of the last message, that the setting is in properties.  I stated, correctly later, that it is in preferences.

The setting is in Dropbox properties.

When dropbox is running, move to the system tray with Windows key b.  Left or right arrow to Dropbox.
I don't know whether you need to use enter or the space bar on the icon.  One or maybe both will work.
When the menu opens, up or down arrow to preferences and press enter.
Start tabbing when the dialog opens.
You will get to a combo box that says open folders in Dropbox Desktop App.  Down arrow.  If you don't hear anything, read the current line.  It should now say Windows Explorer.  If you use Windows 10, which I don't, it may say File Explorer, I don't know.
Tab to the ok button.
The interface should have changed.  If it hasn't, close the window with alt f4 and open it again.
If it still hasn't changed, ask here.

If it says it in the old interface, that means the files and folders are bing displayed as a tree view.  I've never seen them displayed in the old Dropbox interface in that way.  I've always seen them displayed in a list view and such announcements don't occur there.  Are you absolutely sure the person is not using the new interface, where my recollection is that such announcements occur?

Also, what screen-reader is being used?

If it turns out the person is using the old interface, it may be necessary to make a change in screen-reader settings.

Does it say that in the new interface or in the old interface as well?  It sounds to me like a new interface problem and switching to the old interface should stop it.
