Re: Winamp, to customize or not to customize

Hi Terry,

Most of the time, I don’t think it matters.  But, I had so much trouble installing Winamp, as a last desperate measure, I did a custom install and it took.

As you will probably find out if you perform a custom install, there are not a lot of steps as compared to Standard.  Don’t forget to use classic skins.

I’m afraid that if the current owners of Winamp don’t create a major upgrade, it will be obsolete.

Hi Lynn,

Thank you so much for your quick response. I did download Winamp, but would love opinions on customizing versus standard install.

Also, if you prefer customization, what differeing choices are you making that I might also want to make?

Thanks much,

To be sure, go to www.winamp.com and download the beta which I think is 5.8

Some older versions of Winamp will not work with some Windows10 machine.  I'm a witness that this does happen.  Don't know why, but the older versions such as 5.72 won't work on a couple of my machines.

You may have to play around with the output level a bit before you really get started. I don’t know whether the Microphone Sensitivity setting also works with line in recordings or not. You will get some serious audio compression if the level is too high.
Fortunately, you should be able to hear whether that is happening pretty quickly if you listen to it while it’s recording and find a good output level.

How much does the player cost?  Would it make more sense to purchase a digital recorder and a less expensive book player for reading?

Or, perhaps do you have a laptop already?  Getting a USB external sound card with a line-in jack would be much cheaper than anything else.

Hi Evan.  You told me exactly what I wanted to know.  My Uncle has a bunch of old classic soul records that he won’t allow to leave his home, so I thought about killing 2 birds with 1 stone and finding a book player that records in stereo so I could read, as well as plug a turntable preamp into his old Pioneer record player and capture a few of these great old records.  Thanks.

If you’re talking about microphone only recording, then the Book Sense does not record in stereo. It has only one internal mike.

The subject sums it up.  I don’t think that the Victor 2nd Generation records in stereo with 2 internal mics, but do any of the other ones?  Thanks for your help.

Thanks Carolyn. I found Notepad without all those other files.

Veronica, can you get to Notepad by pressing Windows+S and typing in
Notepad? Then, you could short cut it back to Desktop, if what I am
understanding here is happening. As I understand it, you removed the files
you didn't want, but also Notepad is gone?

That did remove Notepad with those other files as part of Notepad from where
it was on my computer.

You can remove files from that list by tapping the Applications key to open
a context menu with three items--Open, Properties, and Remove from list.
Select this latter menu item and pres ENTER to remove the selected file from
the list. Note that this does not delete the file, only its name is removed
from the lit.

On my windows 7 computer, using Jaws, after the search edit box is a

would I go about deleting these files from Notepad? Your suggestions would
be very much appreciated.
