Re: File Explorer

Steven Johnson <saxmonger@...>

On my computer, I opened up file explorer. Then, I hit insert-V and tabbed once to the tree view of settings. Mine landed on touch cursor options open. I hit left arrow once to close that, arrowed down once to general, hit right arrow to open general. Arrow to the right once to verbosity which says intermediate. Hit space bar until it says advanced, then tab to okay and hit enter. I'm sure that someone will have a better idea, but this worked for me.

Hello,

When I’m navigating File Explorer in Windows 10, JAWS reads the highlighted item and then gives me the number in its list. For example, ABC File, 3 of 10. How can I get it to just read the item, minus the sequential number? Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure if anyone can say without more information. What sorts
of download speeds are you getting in general? Streaming doesn't
require a fast computer or a lot of memory and you have much more than
is necessary. My guess is that the stream is playing well the second
time because either some sort of caching is going on, information is
being temporarily saved from the first stream, or the file is being
temporarily saved on your computer.

It is important to know your general download speed in trying to
figure out the problem.

Opening newer Excel files

Hi all, I am necessarily using an older version of MS Office (2003) with, of course, an older version of Excel.  A friend sent me an Excel file with an .xlsx extension.  Wondering if there's a program that will let me open this newer excel file?  Maybe even a conversion program that'll let me convert it back to an older version?

Thanks.

I just discovered a source for audio books that I had never heard off before. With all the shelter in place I thought others might need a source for more books. It is chirp.com  They offer audio books at a big discount. I just purchased a book retail $24.95 for $1.99.

Hello John & Ashley
Thanks for your responses. Do you know if one would be able to stream from an Apple device to the Fire Stick? I notice there is a fire stick remote app for iPhone. I wonder if one would be able to control all the functions of the fire stick with that app?

Hi,
This isn't a list, but I think if it's streaming you want, you should go with the fire stick.
it's able to stream audio from Amazon music, just like an echo, and it can also stream video content from Prime Video, NetFlix, Hulu and youtube among others.
HTH,
John.

Seeking recommendations for Talking/accessible Blu-Ray players

Steven Johnson <saxmonger@...>

The wife and I are signing up for Netflix, and we are going to get the plan where we can stream and also get 2 Blu-Rays at a time.  Someone on this forum a while back mentioned that there are a few somewhat accessible Blu-Ray players on the market.  Has any of you tried any of these products?  Are they worth buying, or should I let the wife pick the one with the picture that she likes and to the devil with accessibility?

Yes, more and more sites are allowing you to log in using your google account. I don't recommend it either.

It may not be a good idea to sign into multiple accounts using Google, Facebook, or any such sites. If I understand what this feature does, and I may be wrong, it allows you to sign into various accounts using Google or perhaps Facebook or something else. If you get hacked, or you are hacked on Facebook or Google or other such sites used in this way, your logins will be available far more easily.

Others will, I hope, comment on this feature. It sounds like it does this, but I haven't heard of this specific message.

Re: National Braille Press books

Troy, Braille is the default book format.  There's a combo box where you can choose which format you want.  Press enter to open the combo box and down arrow to the choice you want.  Each choice is clearly explained.  You would probably want the E-Braille, Word or DAISY download.  Select the option you want and press enter to make your selection. Then you can add the book to your cart.  Even though the download is free, you'll need to go through the check out process and either set up a new account with NBP or log in to your existing account in order to download the book. NBP sends you an Email with the link to your download page.  Log in with your user name and password and click the download button.

Re: accessible bread machines

Hi all,

RE accessible bread machines, yes, I think they have them. Let me do some research, and probably somebody will chime in with more data.

Your theory has only one flaw. It's kind of a big one though. You still have to obtain flour, sugar, shortening, eggs, milk, yeast and whatever else your recipe calls for. Them thar bread machines aren't magical. You gotta give 'em someat to work with. <smiling>

Oh, I'm not against bread machines, not at all, even though I can and do make bread from scratch without all that falldirall, but as I say, you have to have ingredience before the bread machine will work.
