Re: Pontes Media Downloader keyboard shortcuts

When I say poor implementation, its not because the interface is inaccessible.  it's because this is an application, not an app and there is no good reason to have this interface, which a lot of blind people won't know how to work with when another straightforward interface could have been used.  Apps don't have menus and the touch cursor or object navigation is commonly used.  In applications, there is no need and this is another example of Pontes Media Downloader being significantly less accessible in 3.x than in 2.x.

You can easily see the list of shortcuts in version 2.x in the help section and the information is easily accessible just by looking down the page.

Just one more example of poor accessibility implementation in version 3.x.  This interface needs to be moved through with the JAWS Touch Cursor or with NVDA object navigation.  Do you want to know how to do this with one screen-reader or both?

If you don't know how to move in these ways, and you are a demanding user who uses apps not just applications, you need to know how to move in these ways with one or both screen-readers.

I can tell you how to move in this interface with NVDA but I almost never use JAWS and haven't used the Touch cursor.  It isn't even available in my old version of JAWS I keep around just in case it works better here and there.

I have tried to read the Pontes Media Downloader shortcuts list that comes up when I Hit ctrl-K, but JAWS and NVDA only allow me to read the keyboard shortcuts themselves when I scroll down, not the action that will occur with each one.  JAWS says that this information is in a table, but none of the table navigation hotkeys seem to give any further information other than the actual keyboard shortcut.  When I hit insert-B, JAWS will read the keystroke followed by the action, but I would like to quickly navigate to a keystroke and find out what it does without reading the whole list.  Any tips?

As I said in another message which you will probably see, I assume you can see the entire interface with the JAWS Touch Cursor and I know you can using object navigation in NVDA.

Pontes actually has some really nice keyboard shortcuts.  You can see a list of them with ctrl-K, but JAWS and NVDA only read the shortcut keys, not the actions.  Virtualizing only shows the words “keyboard shortcuts” at the top of the Window, with blankness below.  The menus tell the shortcut for most functions though.  I will type them up and share them.

Re: Browser Trouble

Gene

it isn't an either or proposition.  You can have as many different browsers as you want.  If Edge is your default browser, you can set Internet Explorer as your default browser.  Those who use Windows 10 can explain how.  I don't use it and it may be a different procedure than in earlier versions of Windows.

But let's be clear.  When you download something, does Edge come up whether you are in Internet Explorer or Firefox?  Also, how are you trying to download something?  I don't want to assume anything and to know if we are answering your problem, we need to know what you are doing.  Are you opening Firefox, going to a site and following a download link or doing something else such as following a download link from an e-mail?  Knowing this sort of thing is very important to address your problem.

Can someone please give me an idea about how to get back to IE, totally
get rid of MS Edge and maybe use something else for a backup???

Many thanks in advance,

New Excel: Nothing Works As It Did Before

Ron Canazzi

Hi Group,

I use Excel to make database entries into a spreadsheet to keep track of my music and movie collection.  I haven't used it in over a year. I have the Live 365 version of the Microsoft package. Something changed as to importation of data into the tables within a worksheet.

I used to be able to press the hotkeys alt + A, F, T for data, file, text import.  A screen with a security warning would come up and after I pressed enter on the OK button a browse for dialogue would come up and I would import the file.  When the file was in process of loading, the choices were quite straight forward: delimiter, where to import, and other general defaults.

Now when i get past the first step of dismissing the security warning, everything seems jumbled.  I am not sure if this is NVDA/JAWS being confused or if there is something new about Excel that has to be addressed first.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Next Friday Night Workshop: Assistive Technology Trainers Expo: Friday, May 15, 8:00 PM

David Goldfield <david.goldfield@...>

Assistive Technology Trainers Expo

The following message may be forwarded to any interested parties or to any relevant mailing lists provided that announcements such as this one are appropriate and permitted for those lists.

So many of us are spending more time at home during the current Covid-19 crisis. Some of us are working out of our homes. Even if not all of us are working many of us are finding ourselves using technology more than we had expected in very different ways, with an emphasis on teleconferencing. While some are very comfortable using both assistive as well as mainstream technology the fact is that some of us are not. Sometimes, we might find that we need a bit of additional help or training to help us in using that elusive piece of software or hardware. Whether it’s learning a new task in Microsoft Word, improving skills using Windows 10 or downloading a book onto your book player of choice it would be nice to find a trainer who knows how to do exactly what you want and who is willing to provide you with that much-needed assistance.

It is for this reason that I am launching an Assistive Technology Trainers Expo. This is a conference which will take place using the Zoom platform. It is scheduled for Friday, May 15 at 8:00 PM Eastern time. All are welcome to participate, whether you’re using the Zoom program or whether you just want to dial in by phone.

The format will be as follows. Each technology trainer will be given a maximum of five minutes to discuss his or her services. This can include their contact information, what they teach, how they teach, whether or not they charge for their services and how payments should be made. Of course, this information can be shared in just one minute but I’m giving each presenter a maximum of five minutes to elaborate or to go into more details, if they wish to do so. They could, as an example, discuss how or why they feel  their teaching style is unique, examples of demonstrations of how they might present a concept, etc. They don’t have to speak for five minutes but they are welcome to do so if they wish and they will make their presentation without questions or interruptions from me. My only rule is that they stick to training services dealing with technology and not with the selling of other products or services.

We already have some trainers who have expressed interest in presenting. Any interested presenters should contact me privately at info@... so I’ll know how many to expect.

This event will be recorded and will be eventually released for distribution via my Web site.

Here is the relevant Zoom information for this meeting.
