Re: OCR problem

Ann Parsons

Hi all,

Actually, let's start with the simple stuff first. Without knowing more, I can only guess, but has your scanner come upplugged? Is the connecting wire bad? Let's start with the external stuff and work inward. The error message seems to indicate that the program, whatever it is, is working fine, but it can't detect the scanning device. That's where I'd look for the problem. Had a similar problem some time back. I discovered that my 'puter's little cart was standing right on the wire for the scanner and was heavy enough to pull the connecter out of the scanner.

Morning all,

Bob, what program are you using to do your OCR? What type of scanner or camera? What OS? We can't help you if we have no information.

Hi,

How much does a very good USB soundcard cost? I bought a pair of high res audiophile grade headphones, and  the reviews say you definately need an external DAC/soundcard to drive them to get all the quality.

This has happened to my partner after every major Windows update. She has a Dell Lattitude and is using JAWS. Dell had her disable the Real Tech audio drivers so the computer would use the computer speakers.
This does fix the issue but like I said, every major update re-installs the Real Tech drivers again and this process starts all over again. Hope this helps.

The no camera or scanner supported message sounds like the issue I, as well
as others I know, have been having with jaws convenient OCR now for quite
some time. I have a Xerox work center 3210 all in one, and although I
usually use Kurzweil 1000 for my OCR, I would occasionally use jaws for
quick things. I can't get jaws OCR to work with my scanner now, know matter

External sound cards  can be less than 10 dollars and probably up to 200.

I purchased a basic one for 10 dollars Canadian, that’s about 7 u s dollars.

It is about twice the size of a card of matches.

It plugs into a us  b port just like a thumbdrive, and mine had two 1/8 inch ports for line in and oine out.

Re: Pontes Media Downloader Seems to Be Broken

Uninstall the program, manually remove the folder if you see any files left there, and install the program with no files left. If you look at the folder and no files are there, then removing the empty folder won't help and you can just install the program again.

Before doing any of this, you may want to wait for other suggestions.

Having said all that, I'm not optimistic that what I have suggested or others may suggest may help. There are ways to download and convert files that others know that you can try. And, though its inefficient, you can record what you are downloading in real time if you are willing to do that. I don't know how much you download and if that is practical.

Wel, I uninstalled version 3.1, restarted my computer, then reinstalled
version 3.1. Other than it telling me that some folder already existed and
asking me if I wanted to install there anyway, it all went smoothly. But it
still won't download. I get the starting download sound, then it just hangs
there. I have to close the program to get the Download button to become
available again.
Perhaps I need to look for another program? I'm out of ideas as to how to
make this one work. It says the engine is up to date by the way.
Thanks for the advice guys.

I'm not sure why the person is having a problem. It may be necessary to
completely remove the 2x version before installing the new one. Installing
over the old program may cause the problem in the new version.

Regarding JAVA, I don't know why this problem exists when you update JAVA.
It doesn't use the JAVA on your machine, if you have JAVA separately
installed. It installs its own JAVA just for use with that program. It
says so somewhere on the site and also, this computer has no other JAVA than
that installed in the program itself. So if your solution solves your
problem and others, that's good but you don't have to install JAVA
separately if it isn'rt already there.

people were still able to download and a lot weren't. But when the [program

Hi There!

I have been running windows 10 using 4 GB and really do not see any sort of slow down or sluggishness.  I suspect that it would run a bit smoother with a bit more ram but I really do not see any sort of significant slow down.  When I finally get around to upgrading the ram I will find out if it runs any faster. Re: suggested amount of RAM for jaws and windos 10

I agree with Gene. In fact, if a computer is performing poorly or slower than it ought to be performing it is very likely not the fault of the screen reader. It could be due to any number of factors but I can almost assure you that JAWS is probably not going to be one of them. Did the slow performance begin right after Windows was upgraded to Windows 10 or was it noticed a while afterward? It's impossible for us to say exactly what would cause this. Possibilities include items loading during system start which might not need to be loaded and which could be consuming system resources, Windows 10 engaging in file indexing, Windows 10 or some other programs updating in the background, scanning from a legitimate antivirus program, some unknown and unwanted third party application which got installed while installing something else, a virus or some other form of malware, a problematic hard drive ... you get the idea. If someone thinks it's JAWS ask them why they believe that this is the case. I don't know the extent of your computer skills and how comfortable you are in checking for some of the things I've outlined above. If you are not I would ask someone with good computer skills who you trust to check for these things.

Be suspicious any time a tech blames a screen-reader for a problem.  Of course, a screen-reader may cause a problem, but techs love to blame screen-readers for problems just because they are unfamiliar with the programs and they aren't typical kinds of programs, they are made for blind people, not a typical program, and of course they are therefore suspect and second rate programs.

Also, what synthesizer are you using?  The newer symthesizers use more memory but Eloquence doesn't use much and I've used it without the screen-reader causing any problems on machines that had enough memory, but barely.

I doubt there is any such setting except for using a script blocker or
turning off JAVA script. Any applicable setting aside from those may be in
your screen-reader. I'm not sure NVDA has such a setting. I think JAWS
does. But it may be much more simple and easy to try Chrome or some other

Also, your current Firefox is two or more years out of date. Why are you
