Re: can you set up a Gmail account on the same computer this a pop3 account too?

Jim, I also find your message confusing, but I'll tell you this. Your friends are right about gmail. The nice thing about it is that it can be set up on most email programs without too much difficulty. That having been said, with Outlook, I had to call the Microsoft Disability Assistance folks for help in setting it up with my gmail account. Now, except for a few minor idiosyncracies, it works pretty well.

I also feel that IMAP is better than POP3, especially if you use email on more than one device. Otherwise, your messages won't be synced across devices. So, messages you delete from one device will show up on the others. I hope that helps.

eSight 4

Carrie Morales

Hi Everyone,

The eSight 4 was just released on Tuesday, July 28th. It’s a wearable low vision device – like a wearable CCTV that you wear on your head. Not sure how many people here have low vision, but if you’re interested in learning about it, I did a review on it and show how it works. 😊 https://youtu.be/QiCZc24ufCU

Cheers,

Slowed In Thunderbird

lynn white

I would appreciate any help with this problem.

Whenever I am reading mail in Thunderbird, my computer is paralyzed whenever new mail comes in. I can't read any mail or the flow of messages being read is stopped until the new mail comes in.

Is there any settings that I can change in order to speed up the reading process? Thanks.

Online business services for people with disabilities?

Sharon Hooley

Hi,

Are there services to help people with disabilities set up and run lucrative online businesses for people who are on disability for severe health issues that make it necessary to spend a good part of a day resting or doing time-consuming routine procedures? I know about someone who had to stop working because she has issues that has required hospital stays and has low energy.  Can someone make enough income to pay hospital bills with level companies that sell products?  I wish I could create something that would support people like her.  Any suggestions or feedback would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Re: Disappointing experience with some YouTube videos

Sharon Hooley

I doubt that in this case they were taken down because of copyright violation, as this organization clearly makes them freely available on their website below the current video player, as I had been able to watch some of them successfully.  In the past, I've come across videos I wanted to watch later, but they were clearly listed as deleted.  I'm curious what a sighted person will find here.

I don't know what is shown on screen when this happens but it has happened to me before.  this material was probably taken down or maybe you have to be a paid member of Youtube to stream it.  Why this happens instead of something on screen or some sort of announcement that the file has been taken down for copyright violations is something I don't know.  If you have a sighted person around to see what is on screen, we may get an answer but all this material is copyrighted.

Hi,

I'm trying to listen to some YouTube live stream recordings, but sometimes all I hear is music so far.  I understand that we have to wait until it's published, but there's at least one episode that should have been made available a week or two ago.  Does anyone else experience this frustration? Any feedback and suggestions of what to do would be much appreciated.

Send & Receiving manually with Outlook.

1. Alt+F for File menu.

2. T for Options (or just arrow up once to Options).

3. Now navigate to the Advanced Tab and Tab until you get to Send & Receive... which the keystroke is Alt+D.

4. Open that option up and adjust things accordingly.

Re: How do I add BCC field

Smiling?

Even though I believe this was already answered, here it is again.

Outlook Toggling The BBC Field:

1. Open up a new message (Control+N).

2. Alt+P to get into the properties while focus is within this new message.

3. Now press the letter B for BBC Field.

4. Tab or Shift+Tab to see if the BBC Field is now incorporated within this new open message.

Re: Info on a Kindle reader please

Gene

I should add that the voice used in the Kindle, if it is the same now as when the demonstration was made, is better than the voices I was saying I hate. but I still wouldn't want to listen to it for an extended period for reading. But it may be good enough so that people would use it even if they don't particularly like it. I have no idea what voice is used in the tablet.

By default the speech in the Fire tablets uses the same voice as the one
used on Fire TV devices, if you've used them. There are a number of
other voices available which can be optionally installed at no extra
cost. Personally, I'm not a fan of any of them but the default voice
isn't bad. Of course, one's perception of a synthetic voice is very
subjective as a voice that I might not like might be one that you might
prefer, and vice versa.

Sugar,

While Amazon sells many different models of reading devices they can be broken down into two categories: Fire tablets and Kindle ereaders.

The Kindle ereader has a screen reader and is only used for reading material such as books, magazines, newspapers and even comic books. Other than accessing the Kindle store you can't perform other functions such as reading Web pages, checking email, downloading apps, listening to music, etc. They are primarily designed as readers.

The Fire tablets can do all of these things but they are also full-featured  tablets, meaning that you can browse the Web, check email, play music, use apps, etc. There are pros and cons to each. Both have a screen reader but I'm more familiar with the Fire tablets than the Kindle readers.

If your friend is able to purchase books via Amazon's Web store she does have the option of having Alexa read the books to her in Alexa's voice. Alexa can also play books from Audible and books can even be purchased from Audible using an Amazon Echo.

Sugar,

Kindles can definitely read out loud. The voices are from Ivona and are fairly human sounding and easy to understand. If she needs to use the built-in screen reader to browse for and read books there may be a bit of a learning curve if she isn't used to touch screen based screen readers.

Subject: [TechTalk] Info on a Kindle reader please

Hi all

I’ve never had one of these Kindle readers, so a friend of mine is having trouble seeing and is needing something to read to her until she gets her cataract procedure but can’t have it done until this Coved clears up a bit.

She is in a home so it makes it difficult and she can’t use her lap top anymore

I am needing help in locating a Kindle reader that will read to her and does anyone know where I can purchase one for her?

Thanks so much.

Her birthday is coming up and I’d like to know where and how I can do this for her soon.

Thanks in advance,

Sugar,

You could purchase a 7-inch Fire tablet for $50 and the HD 8 for $80. The basic Kindle reader costs around $80 or so. The HD 10, which is a Fire tablet, costs $149.

That's my point. I may have heard the voice but I haven't heard that product. and reading a book means you will be listening to a voice for extended periods.

I hhate, really hate those kinds of voices, with their improper pauses in parts of sentences where pauses shouldn't occur, and their mis;pronunciation of more words than I consider good accuracy, and the odd and unusual inflections. I'm not saying others will agree, I'm saying that just because one person likes a certain speech doesn't mean someone else will. I really think the speech should be heard and by the person who will be using it as well before purchasing.

Sugar,

Kindles can definitely read out loud. The voices are from Ivona and are
fairly human sounding and easy to understand. If she needs to use the
built-in screen reader to browse for and read books there may be a bit of a
learning curve if she isn't used to touch screen based screen readers.

I do not know that for sure, but I hear they do have text to speech.I would verify that with customer service before ordering however.

I think they can also enlarge and chage contrast to assist in low vision.

Yes, thanks Dave. I plan to do so

I just want to make sure she gets what she needs.

Will all kindle readers read to her?

Thanks so much

first thought for me was Amazon...give them a call and instead of shipping it to you have them ship it directly to her.

Sugar
